Right on the edge of what would be considered Broad Ripple proper, Northminster has been around for over 75 years and is located directly on Kessler Boulevard. This is very much a residential church set smack dab in the middle of a neighborhood. It has parking both in front of and behind the church with accessible parking spots on both sides. I entered through the back of the church and the entry had a single door that was easily accessible (I think it was an automatic door, as well). The church has two floors and does have an elevator. As I was present for an event, I did not explore the church and can't speak to full accessibility. I will note that I went to a main set of bathrooms that weren't really accessible - I could get into the bathroom, but the stalls were definitely lacking. I think there were single-user bathrooms near the sanctuary that are a bit better. Rev. Brian Shivers is senior pastor. Rev. Karen Herbst-Kim is associate pastor. PC-USA does ordain women and LGBTQ ministers, though you will find both conservative and liberal members of PC-USA congregations. I was present last evening for the last in a year-long concert series called "Sound and Spirit." It's an outreach of The Arts at Northminster and is definitely a draw for the church. The concerts are always free. This year's series included The Jeremiahs (Irish traditional), Palermo Presents (classical), Rob Dixon Trio (Jazz), Requiem in D Minor (Classical), Carolyn Craig, Organ (Classical), and Blue Highway (Bluegrass). The concerts are in the sanctuary. It's a fairly traditional sanctuary that has recently been made a bit more accessible with a couple of shortened pews offering natural wheelchair seating. They also, I learned, replaced a couple doors on the side that weren't quite accessible. I had no trouble going through them. There was a wider wheelchair that was outside the sanctuary in an area that appears to be used by parents with small children. I actually spent part of the evening there. I would probably give accessibility a 3.5 out of 5, though there's an obvious effort being made with recent improvements and an attitude of welcome that is nice. The parking spots were true ADA spots (rare for churches and not even true for my now home church of Second Presbyterian). I'd attended a couple services years ago here before a tragedy claimed the lives of the pastor and his wife. A plaque in their memory still rests on a wall in the church. Northminster has a "come as you are" approach to worship. While most dress business casual, there's not a judgmental approach to more casual folks (like me). Services are also streamed online including many of the special services. They host a variety of community activities including a preschool, yoga, music lessons, and more. While I'm happy in my church home, there's definitely something special here at Northminster with a wonderful staff, friendly congregation, progressive spirit, and a strong arts focus. For those seeking a more progressive yet traditional worship service Northminster would be a great place to explore.

By now, it's no secret that I've been on a rather extended journey through some of Indy's churches…read moreover the past few weeks and months. I stumbled across the United City website a couple of weeks before their first announced service was to be held a couple months ago at the elementary school gym on the Heritage Christian school campus at 6401 East 75th Street. The worship service is on Sundays at 10:45 am. I've attended United City on a couple of occasions and while I've enjoyed both visits to the recent church plant my gut is telling me that it's just "not quite" what I'm looking for in terms of either sticking around or actually becoming a member. United City is co-pastored by Josh Wagner and Keith Spencer. Both have backgrounds in ministry, though I believe both are relatively young (I'm guessing mid-30's or so) and the demographic of the church definitely seems to skew into that age range with a strong emphasis on younger families. While I did see some older folks, the vast majority of attendees seemed to be young families or within that age range. United City has a strong emphasis on being a multi-cultural congregation, an objective that starts at the congregation's leadership with having both a black and a white pastor. The vision of United City is clearly stated on their website - radical hospitality, refreshing community, sacrificial generosity, and living faith. Strategic partners include Indiana Ministries, Crosspoint, Passion4Planting, New Thing, and Bridgeway Community Church among others. If I have a favorite part of their service, it's honestly the music. I never did quite figure out who the worship leader is, but his passion for leading worship was obvious and I liked that he could live into that passion without turning it into nothing but a performance. The music leans toward a pop/rock sound and both times that I attended a Crowder tune was covered. The band includes guitars, drums and definitely a lot of passion. As someone who got back into the church thanks to Christian punk, the music was definitely one of my favorite things. The worship service seems to last in the 75-90 minute range - I heard both pastors speak on different Sundays and appreciated both sermons for different reasons. Because service is held in an elementary school gym, accessibility is pretty solid. There's accessible parking, a solid curb cut and the gymnasium offers different options for those with mobility issues. Because it is level to the ground, however, be aware that if you sit in the back and are in a wheelchair you won't likely see anything during those times when people stand up. Truth be told, United City is "almost" what I was looking for in a church home. Almost, but not quite. I was greeted warmly during both visits - I should note that my visits were not back-to-back. However, I can't deny that I felt somewhat like an "other." Both pastors made a point of greeting me on both visits. It's hard to miss newcomers. Attendance is still building and it would be practically impossible to just blend in to the crowd. For a just over two month old congregation, they're doing fine in terms of attendance and I can picture their enthusiasm being contagious. However, for lack of a better way to say it I also have to say I never really "connected" with anyone in two visits. Admittedly, I'm a natural introvert and don't do the casual social scene well but at times it just felt a bit awkward. It hasn't always for me in my church visits - so I know that it can be different. While I did connect with one pastor via social media, the simple truth is that because I was older I immediately felt different and there wasn't anything that really happened to help transcend that feeling. I believe United City has some small group options and I know they're very into community service. Overall, I really liked United City. I admire the vision greatly, but it just didn't quite feel like a place that I was going to call home. I may yet visit again, maybe a bit after the whole church plant vibe has calmed down - a vibe I certainly get since I've helped plant a church myself - because I have a feeling I would really enjoy these people. If you're looking for a church home, especially if you're in the area, I'd definitely give United City a visit.

We have been on a world tour of churches this year and I can honestly say, this is the most welcoming church I've stepped into. I was invited to lunch with 3 different couples. There is no Sunday School for children, there is for adults, kids stay in the Sanctuary until singing, announcements, etc are finished. They provide a jr church for 4 and up. All under 4 go into the nursery. Staff is really awesome. The Pastor brings the Word straight from the Bible and its all meat. So if you are wanting to be feed - this is your church. A lot of game nights, picnics, women only and men only events. Plenty of couples thing. Serving several Missions around the world. Wednesday night and Sunday night worship available.

This is my church. My husband and I have gone here about 30 years. There have been many changes…read moreover the years. The number of people have gone up and down and up and down. We are growing again, but are still small. We have a great minister and great leadership. Pastor Tom preaches straight from the Bible. We hear from the Old and New Testament. Every sermon can be allied to our lives today. It's a loving church where everyone is welcome. We're at 39 N Starter St. in Indianapolis. Sunday School is at 9:30am on Sunday and Church is 10:30. There are classes for all ages and a nursery too. We have a praise team so we sing contemporary Christian Music. Rhythm Guitar, Bass Guitar, and I play a pretty rockin piano. Come check us out.
