I LOVE this church! I am spiritually fed every time I attend. Each service is about an hour and the word is delivered in a simplistic approach that anyone can comprehend and apply to their life. This church claims to be a sound, Christian church that supports their congregation but in reality their services are a mere production and the sermons are Ted Talks. They don't care about the needs of their members, putting them in harms way. It's about looking good and image only, above loving people well. I visited Heartland Church for a Saturday evening service, a terrific option for someone like myself who has more than a little bit of trouble getting my body to behave on Sunday mornings. While I've been visiting churches over the past few months, it seems like a good majority that I've visited on either Saturday or Sunday evening have been more geared to "small group" or intimate services rather than a more traditional Sunday service. So, for starters it's worth noting that Heartland's Saturday evening service is, in fact, a full-on worship service. I love that. Some people that I truly adore call Heartland their church home. I couldn't be more thrilled for them that they've found a church that they love. However, I must be up front and say that despite my observation that Heartland has quite a bit going for it it's not a church I'm likely to visit a second time and it's hard to imagine calling it a church home. I arrived probably 15-20 minutes before the start of their 5pm service. There's a main parking lot in front of the church that fills up quickly, while they have satellite parking lots with shuttles available. This is a very corporate area and parking is at a premium. They had a small handful of accessible parking spots at the front of the church, though they were all taken upon my arrival. I found a spot off to the side that seemed to offer enough room for someone in a wheelchair. Fortunately, it worked out. One end of their 96th Street campus is for religious education, while the main entrance is in the middle of the building. They have an automatic door opener - nice accessibility touch. As you enter, there's what I think is a greeting area for newbies and a coffee area with the main auditorium to a little bit farther and to the left. The auditorium is decent sized and also offers a balcony that wasn't open tonight. The auditorium offers traditional, removable chairs. There's a semi-greeter handing out bulletins at the door. I ended up picking a seat that seemed nice for wheelchairs, though it made visibility rather difficult I would learn once the service started with the usual pre-message worship featuring mostly pop-oriented worship songs with a band that featured multiple musicians and vocalists. They use lots of technology within their worship, from large screens amplifying scripture and quotes to be remembered to taped intros that include announcements, etc. The auditorium seemed about half full - a decent crowd for a Saturday evening and certainly more than I usually see when I visit a Saturday evening worship. Pastor Colby handled most of the "emcee" type responsibilities, while founding Pastor Darryn delivered the message that was the second in a series called "My Flippin' Family." What did I appreciate most? The crowd was more diverse than what I usually see in larger churches. Heartland has four campuses, this one being their main campus, and I appreciated the diversity in the auditorium and within those that were serving. I appreciated the automatic door opener, as well, while Pastor Darryn's message was a low-key combination of theology meets everyday life. I can easily understand why the church has grown so much in the less than 20 years since it was founded in 2001. They offer a variety of service options and have an emphasis on both small groups and a "growth track" that seems to essentially serve as an intro to the church and how you can grow within it. I also appreciated that they didn't pass a plate for offering, but have areas around the auditorium and as you leave - along with online donations. What didn't quite work for me? #1) Given some of the reviews, I was expecting a greater sense of welcome. While I can't say I wasn't spoken to, because I was, not a single person actually introduced themselves. I got a couple greetings during the "introduce yourself to people around you" part of the service, but interestingly not a single person actually introduced themselves. 2) Despite the automatic doorway, I found accessibility kind of lacking. I saw multiple ways of service that would not be available to someone in a wheelchair - it didn't seem the front of the auditorium was accessible, though I didn't check behind it. I'm sure there are ways to serve, of course, but I was surprised how inaccessible certain areas were. 3) The worship was perfectly fine, but I was surprised how little energy it felt like was coming out from the music tonight. Others were into it - so it may very well have just been me. Ultimately, though, it just didn't really lead me into feeling God's Presence like worship usually does. I wrestled between 3-4 stars. 3.5 would be most appropriate, but that isn't an option. I think the difference between 3 and 4 is "Will I go back?" and, quite honestly, I won't. I can see much to love here, but with a complete absence of hospitality? This is a one and done experience. read more

I have now lived in Indianapolis for over two years and it has been a struggle finding a church for myself. It was easy back home considering I just went with my family every Sunday. Now, living alone, it hasn't been so easy finding that spot to worship. Sure, I've gone with friends to different places but like with all things important, you want something that feels right for you. I just hadn't found it. Luckily a few weeks ago, a friend from work invited me to go to Heartland with her and I agreed. It isn't located far from my apartment and once I move in the next month, it will be even closer. My first impression of this church was of their worship band. What energy! Though I wasn't familiar with a lot of the contemporary songs they chose, I enjoyed every single one of them. I immediately liked the fellowship. Then came the sermon. Usually this is the deal breaker for me because if you can't connect with the message, it's hard to stay focused. Fortunately, I did enjoy the message because it was both practical and real. When I can learn something from the Bible that can then be directly transferred to my life, it's a great thing. Now with the holidays coming, they are offering everyone an opportunity to take a box and fill it with items that families may need. I'm already looking forward to bringing a box to work and encouraging everyone to fill it. Needless to say, this place is motivating me to take action and I'm so thankful for that -- because I haven't been able to find a place in the past couple of years that has really taken hold on me. Heartland Church is my glimpse of Heaven. The amount of love I felt immediately was overwhelming. There is a quote by my favorite rapper, Lecrae, "the most segregated time of day is Sunday service". I've dated inter-racially most of my life and I always felt like I would either have to go to a "white" or a "black" church if I ended up marrying inter-racially. And then I stepped into Heartland and I realized that was a lie. Heartland is the most ethnically diverse church I've ever seen in my life. Not only is it ethnically diverse, it has a lot of diversity in age, economic backgrounds, etc. Although Heartland is a big church and extremely welcoming, you definitely need to be proactive in feeling like you are a part of the church. You can take a spiritual gifts test to see where you might be able to help out the most in the church. My results guided me towards youth ministry. For almost 3 years I have led a group of 14-20 high school students. It has given me so much purpose in life to be able to help guide these young women through their difficult High School days. Heartland is less about the sermons (although that is great) and more about building community. Heartland is a church where you get involved serving, and join a small group and go through life with other believers. We believe that life happens in small groups, not on Sunday mornings. On top of all of the our worship experience is amazing! It definitely helps get the week started right. You won't be disappointed with Heartland. I've been to a lot of churches in my life time and this is the only one where I've felt like I could be myself, sinner and all. read more

I have been attending this church for about a year. When I moved to Indy I had a really hard time finding a church that I enjoyed week after week. Being from a small town it is quite a shock going to such a large church but Heartland does an excellent job about making you feel at home. Darren is the main pastor and always has a wonderful message that leaves you thinking a little harder. Another thing I really enjoy about the church is that they are always having different pastors speak. I have enjoyed all the guest pastors and have looked forward to many of them returning. One Sunday a guest pastor mentioned that Heartland was one of the most generous churches that they had ever visited. My husband and I had been faithful to this place for years. We met here. We tithed here. We served here. We prayed here. We were in small groups here and we will NEVER be back. My husband and I went to Saturday morning prayer and Pastor Darryn Scheske literally grabbed my husband's arm, as we were about to pray for our family, and directly accused my husband of telling people that the pastor is racist. (Which there have been many questionable things said at that church and many people of color of have left) We told him that accusation was false and he continued to negatively engage with us in front of SEVERAL people at the church. We talk to maybe 5 people at the church who are friends of ours outside of the church. He also said that we were not welcomed back into his church to pray. We will never be back again. By the way, I told the Pastor I am a woman of color and I have not felt comfortable in that church for a very long time. He seemed to show NO concern. read more

From the outside this seemed like a great church, giving back to the community and good messages. My husband and I went for over a year. First the church split in two which was disconcerting, but not rare in churches. We had a difficult time getting involved and found out they do not believe in social events within the church, only for the community. As much as we admired their dedication to the community, where did it leave us? So I got involved in a ministry. This ministry required 5 months of training which was quite a commitment, but I felt very strongly about it. After I had completed half of it, I was told by the trainer that God had told her I was not a good fit and could not continue. Ummm.... Well after crying and asking why, I was told just that God told her. Of course feeling the pastor was a good pastor I asked to meet with him and the director to clear the problem. I was even offered by one of the elders to come and represent me because he had also been in the class and was as clueless as I was. I was denied all requests. I was never allowed to even speak to the pastor. I was told by others in the class who thought I was one of the strongest candidates that they felt the leader was threatened by me because I asked a lot of questions, (wanting to get it right). So join this church if you like it, but I hope you never have a real problem because most likely it will be swept under the rug as you are discarded to the curb and denied a biblical resolution. read more

Heartland church I was invited to by a coworker almost 5 years ago now when I felt I never in my life had truly found my own church I would call home. Pastor Darren and his wife Loree truly are the most genuine people and God uses Darren to touch the lives of so many people. The first time I attended this church I knew this was going to be the church to call home. It's diverse socially, welcoming beyond words, the worship is beyond phenomenal and I began when we had a worship lady on the team named Missy Augustine who I used to tell my mom gave me chills when I heard her sing. Each Sunday I told my mom who I invited many times, after losing her husband and she was struggling hard with grief and depression and later came and also found this to be home, that Missy should sing and travel professionally and that her voice reminded me of Mandisa. I learned that Missy was chosen by a recognized recording Christian Music group and was picked up my them to travel and sing. Most recently, Missy returned to sing on Christmas this last for us and her voice filled the room with chills and some tears. Each and every Sunday Darren fills those in the room with hope, truth, God's Word and I can't explain how much I share Heartland to anyone I come across or how many people I have invited or recommended to try this as their church. The dream team is amazing, and you can grow on your spiritual path at your pace. The offering is not collected and the collection is placed in wooden boxes at the back of the sanctuary to place as you leave. The one thing I do wish to see different is more frequent communion be taken as a church. Growing up this is something regular in my church we did and I would like to see this more at my church I now call home. I give this church a hands down 5star. Sometimes I have visited other churches large in the local area when I was searching and they just lacked a warm genuine touch. At times I felt almost a performance feeling and felt cold. Heartland is anything but and encompasses so much if you are looking for a genuine place to call home. Each person has to find a church that is right for them but this was most definitely the right place for me and if you visit you will not be disappointed. read more
