I've had therapists that felt more like drill sergeants and therapists that overcoddled, neither of which were helpful in the long run. To me the ideal therapist is someone that truly cares and empathizes with what their patient is going through, but doesn't shy away from pointing out behaviors or patterns that are detrimental to their wellbeing or long-term goals. I also feel more connected when a therapist has a sense of humor and our sessions don't feel overly clinical or stuffy. I've got an edgy sense of humor and it's nice to be able to laugh about the absurdity of some of life's curveballs with my therapist and not be judged if I make a dark joke. If I'd had Jeremy as my therapist during my teen years, rather than the serious poker-faced gentleman that made me too self-conscious to bring up certain topics (think having a conversation about sex or drugs with your most conservative relative) I probably would have had a much better grasp on many of my ongoing issues by the time I hit adulthood. But there's no topic I don't feel comfortable bringing up with Jeremy, and his sense of humor makes talking about more sensitive or awkward topics a lot easier for me. He's like the best friend that always has sage advice and knows just how to get you out of a funk when you're feeling down. I was a bit shocked that anyone could give Jeremy anything but positive praise for his dedication and earnestness, but my guess is that some of the negative reviews came from people hoping for a therapist that would simply nod along as they blamed the world for all their problems, and repeat phrases like "you're right--that's so unfair" or "keep doing exactly what you're doing. It's everyone else that's the problem." This part of Orange County can be a pretty stuffy environment, which makes Jeremy unique for this locale. But he's the best therapist Newport Beach has to offer if you want to get down to brass tax when it comes to your issues. I've been seeing him for years and will continue to do so for as long as he remains in Orange County (which I hope is a very long time).
