On budget and on time. How often do you hear that? We had heard that about Mike and his company before we started with him, but when we heard that our project was ambitious, we were not sure it would be the case with us. It was. Mike and his crew were terrific. Mike was wonderful with communication, keeping us in the loop, sending photos of the project, and helping us select items for our job. He was also excellent in follow up on a few minor items. We did not have to track him down; he stayed up with us to make sure they were completed. We also found him to be a straight shooter. Mike and his crew renovated our kitchen, our living area floors and added a closet. We hired Mike, Construction Services Hawaii pre-covid to remodel both bathrooms and the kitchen. When covid hit and shut down was mandatory and we had to temporarily close our business, we had to put a halt to the work. Half the master bath and the sunlights in the kitchen were done. The work was perfection. Having the experience with Mike and his crew, we had them return to complete the remodel. Not only did they complete the work within the estimated time, we added more work, completing the fence, adding a sink in the garage, etc. and they still manage to complete within their estimated time. Mike is a delight to work with and a great partner in helping you build exactly what you want to build. I had maybe the ugliest outdoor shower on the Big Island and I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it. I mocked out my design, picked the materials, landscaping, fixtures, etc., explained what I wanted, showed him pictures. And I got exactly what I wanted on time/on budget. When we had a minor disconnect between what I wanted the stonework to look like and what it actually looked like laid out, Mike thought on it overnight, came back in the morning with a sledgehammer and -- voila -- disconnect solved. ;-) He'd thought on it for an evening and came up with the perfect solution ... no arguments or stress. Can't believe I'm the first to review Mike and his company. WHY? He is the nicest, most accommodating, and trusting contractor that we were blessed to have met and worked with. Especially considering that we live on Oahu and he on the Big Island. So finding someone we could trust to do what they say they'll do in the timeframe promised was a risky proposition on our part. But Mike won me over from the get go with his honest assessment of the repairs that needed to be done and the cost he quoted. He wasnt cheap but he was competitive and mostly he was very patient with my aging parents who kept asking him to cut out this and that to bring the price down. I loved how Mike looked for ways to belp us reduce our cost where he could but then stayed true to fixes that was important and necessary. He was also very good with sending us weekly photos to show us the progress of the job and when we could fly over to check on the work he always made himself available to meet us to go over the details of the work. Our family was very happy with his work and most especially of the "Aloha" professionalism he always showed us when discussing business. The house we owned was an investment property we had rented for years but it had been neglected too even though it was managed by a local property mgmt firm. Putting it mildly..the house was in poor condition with ALOT of work that needed to be done. Even the yard had been neglected but Mike helped us out by referring one of his workers who cleaned it up for us in one day and doing it in rain. In the end, we ended up selling the house in less than a year since Mike and his crew began the work. He did an awesome job. So easy to work with and so creative in his problem solving. After having lived through no fewer than seven major home remodels in our lives, we came upon Construction Services Hawaii (Mike Fromme), and had far and away our best experience with any contractor. It started with Yelp, and he was the most responsive and helpful of the five we contacted. Unlike others, he spent significant time with us on an organized plan and checklist, visiting material suppliers, etc, in order to create a truly comprehensive bid. It was neither the cheapest nor the most expensive--instead it was exactly right for the job. Anything we couldn't foresee now, we did on a T&M basis. Every step of the way, he helped us weigh budget tradeoffs. Our project involved moving interior walls and completely redoing our kitchen, along with great room and custom mahogony entertainment center. In addition, when we couldn't find a capable pool tile installer, Mike undertook the complete removal and install of new glass tiles, along with a resurfacing of the coping, then the construction of a new outdoor built-in gas barbeque. When we were done, no square foot of the four bedroom house was untouched, including all new furniture inside and out, installed under his supervision. The workmanship was uniformly excellent. Best of all--and this was unbelievable--the project came in on time and on budget! A first for us. To cap it off, Mike and crew are courteous, honest and delightful to work with. In Hawaii, new homeowners often have their property blessed by a Native Hawaiian spiritual leader, to drive out bad energy and attract positive energy. I have had four homes blessed. I can't speak for others, but for me, it has worked. Much to my surprise, I feel I am getting similar results by having hired Mike Fromme of Construction Services Hawaii. From the moment he and his men started a month-long remodel project on my 101-year-old plantation camp house, I could feel great energy fill the space, as they demolished and replaced all the rotted wood with new materials as fresh and clean as their positive attitudes. It was a gut feeling that first led me to call Mike, simply after having seen his logo on the side of the truck. The name of his web site impressed me: listenplanbuild.com. Listen. Plan. Build. That says it all. No messing around. So I called. Mike visited. I showed him the plans I had drawn up to rip out a room in the center of the house, soundproof one exterior wall, replace a ceiling and build an entire new kitchen. He went home to crunch the numbers, and in the mean time, I contacted a woman living in a nearby plantation house that Mike had recently remodeled. She described Mike's work as "beautiful." So far, so good. I hoped Mike could come up with a reasonably priced bid. He did, and within days, the crew was up and running. Hiring a local contractor to do a major remodel is unlike hiring Home Depot to install your flooring. There is no comparison between being a customer for a small local business versus a huge anonymous corporation. It is essential to keep this in mind. There is no human relationship between you and the corporation, despite what the company's expensive ad campaigns might say. On the other hand, with a local contractor, it is a human relationship at its most fundamental level. It's really like entering a marriage. These are major, expensive decisions, with a lot at stake, so it is absolutely essential that communications be ultra-clear, and that trust be intact. If you can't approach the deal as such, go find another contractor that you do click with. You do not want to enter into a very invasive and long-term process (one month is long when they're tearing your house apart) with someone you cannot communicate with. The stakes are too high and there are just too many possible pitfalls to not take the necessary precautions in finding a contractor that is not only skilled, but one who completely understands your vision of what you need to build. Once you find the "right" contractor, make sure you read all the fine print before you sign, and make sure it conforms exactly to what you discussed in conversation. Ask questions about anything that is not crystal clear. That's all part of the ultra-clear communications necessary to ensure a successful remodel. If hiring a contractor is like getting married, then the crew is like having in-laws over for an extended period of time (in-laws that happen to be ripping out your termite-eaten walls). Fortunately, these guys were the kind of folks you'd be happy to have for in-laws. They were skilled, friendly and considerate. They imbued the house with positive energy. But positive energy alone does not a house make. They also had a healthy amount of equal parts brains and muscle -- required ingredients for this kind of work. They were able to hoist and secure a 1000-lb. beam into position with as much confidence as they could delicately scribe endless lengths of cove trim and base boards. They also recognized problems that I would not have seen, and worked creatively to solve them. For example, they went to great lengths to compensate for the ubiquitous lack of squareness in my vintage house. They created solutions to make the unsquare angles less obvious, while making sure that everything that was installed, such as cabinets and countertops, was perfectly level. They were also able to recognize warped cabinetry (that had cost an arm and a leg), and had the skill to install those defective cabinets in a way that mitigated the warp problem, since I had no interest or time to return the cabinets and wait for a replacement. My only negative remark about working with Mike is the computer program he uses for billing. When you get an invoice, it is somewhat more complicated than it needs to be. I found myself calling him to ask for clarification on numbers, and after Mike explained how it worked, I couldn't help wondering why he uses such a torturous software program. Maybe it makes his work easier in ways that are not readily visible... I am now sitting in my newly remodeled home, admiring the fine craftsmanship that I owe to Construction Services. The sunlight streams in the new windows and throughout the new, finely finished space. It fills me with tranquility. Hiring Mike was the best blessing I could have ever given my home -- or my family. We are now ready to have our home properly blessed, in the Hawaiian tradition. read more

He was thorough and paid great attention to detail when preparing our bid for our condo that suffered a water leak from the unit above.
