I worked with Pete some 12 years ago for posing instruction in preparation for NPC Ironman. Following my first competition it was obvious that I did things wrong (though my posing was great!). I used a vanilla diet from Google and burned myself out. I found myself dreading the gym and eventually quit going altogether. My experience and process ruined it for me - 100% my fault. I've made several attempts to get back into a program/routine at a few of the larger gyms over the years, but found trainers to be mostly incompetent and I spent most of my time waiting for weights or machines. Fast forward to this year - my wife is entering her first competition (E Cup). Accordingly, I recommended she connect with CZ Fitness for competition prep. After connecting with Pete on her goals I found myself signing up for training as well after being out of the gym for almost 7 years. It was important to me to have someone I trust guide me towards my goals. It was even MORE important to have someone I trust guide my wife towards hers. I was looking for some nutritional guidance in the way of a meal plan to get back on track with healthy eating and lose weight I gained during the pandemic. I went to Apple through a recommendation to get set up with a meal plan. I was desperate to try anything and during my consultation I should have asked more questions. I paid $700 and really didn't get much, no blood test to evaluate what foods I should or should not be eating. I was given a meal plan I could of pulled on line and had to go weekly to get my fat measured. For this extreme amount of money this could of been more full service and included some guidance with workouts. I felt my money was just taken from me and was left to my own devices. When I expressed how I was dissatisfied over email that $700 was a lot for what I got. Apple didn't really seem to care, and said that maybe she should of explained better. However she would not even give me a partial refund. There was no trying to make it right. If you're not competing in a body competition this fitness studio doesn't care about you they just take your money, from my personal experience. read more

If you are like me, you've been a member of gyms for years and years. You may also be like me in one other respect: You've spent a lot of money and time and had very little results. That was me and probably lots of people. That is the #1 primary reason to train at CZ: Results. Their unique business model caters to serious athletes who want to compete on a bodybuilding stage but also those who simply want to get into shape. To me, there are 3 elements that make CZ Fitness a compelling and unique gym. 1 - The training itself is excellent, challenging, and customized to the person doing the lifting. I've been there for 3 years now and still learn new things weekly from the training staff and other athletes. Although you won't find hundreds of machines, you will find all necessary equipment to work your body harder than it's ever been worked in the past. 2- Their nutrition program is what really enabled my success. They measure my bodyfat weekly and adjust my meal plan about once a month. It's a great approach because I can see immediate results from the work I am putting in. As a side note, in my case I've had many other issues, such as IBS and other chronic pain that have been greatly diminished. 3- Environment. I personally feel this is the x-factor. Pete and Apple Grubbs have created an amazing environment of like-minded athletes that feels more like family than a stale gym. Most of us know each other's family members, school graduations, family projects, etc. It feels like we're all doing life together. Construction Zone is a family owned, medium-sized personal training gym. The facility is old-school: lots of heavy weights, lots of trophies, little decor in basically a converted warehouse. This is the first gym I had ever seen with 200 pound dumbbells. Their training sessions package was the least expensive per session that I found in the Eastside area. As far as I could tell, the clientele were all serious athletes following strict meal plans while lifting serious weights. While their meal plans are not cheap, around $800 for three months, I really liked seeing this feature. 80% of bodybuilding is how you eat. Nearly all gyms that offer personal training nonetheless have no knowledge of nutrition beyond bro-science. The meal plan that I was given worked fantastically; I put on muscle at the same time I lost fat. Although I did feel the low-carb fuzzy mind at times, this negative effect was minimized by diet changes. The meal plan even worked better than a a strict low-carb diet and I felt better following it. The training was competent. I liked that my exercises were changed over time as my body adapted, rather than doing the same things every time. Despite these overall positive aspects, I quit after two months, even though I paid for three. My biggest issue was that every meal plan was provided late. My last plan was delivered a week and a half after I told my trainer my current plan wasn't providing enough calories. By that time my metabolism had already slowed due to constant hunger, so the new plan was not relevant anymore. Even had it been provided right away, I didn't trust it, because it was titled with another client's name. After I pointed this out, the name was changed to my name, but spelled incorrectly. For the price I should have gotten plans on-time, clearly personalized, and with an explanation of why I am doing things rather than just being told what to do. Secondarily, with a personal trainer, that hour is supposed to be yours. Yet on several occasions I was left standing around at the start of my workout hour while my trainer finished a personal conversation or other matters. I understand I'm not the only customer, but at least I should get an apology for the missing time. Lastly, I didn't like the attitude I saw towards injury. In one case my trainer was laughing with another about how a customer got stuck under the bench press bar. That was a few weeks after I met another client with his arm in a sling, working around an injury he received there. read more
