He diagnosed…read morewith Stage 4 Breast Cancer that metastasized to the bone and stated that there is no known cure for bone cancer, but there is hope to slow it and when I asked him if I was going to die, he told me that he wasn't preparing me for a casket. In the days that followed i sat down with a friend of a friend who was battling Breast Cancer as well and asked her how do I pick a doctor, her response, "Find someone who is capable of making you believe you are capable of living because you will die with them." Ultimately I would meet with another oncologist at a top rated hospital to get the second opinion just to put my mind at ease and the treatment method came back as the same. I decided to stay with Northwest Oncology for treatment because my Oncologist and his staff made me believe that I was capable of living with cancer, which is ultimately what I am doing because there is no known cure. To my Oncologist, I'm not just a number, I am a person and I matter. Most people dread going to the oncologist, I love it because while these people see the worst of the worst, they smile at you, remember your name and they treat you like your human. When things don't feel right, they take me serious and their goal is to keep you living as long as possible. I can be honest with my Oncologist knowing that he won't make me feel like it's nothing. Everything I say is heard and it's amazing to know that no matter what happens, he's always got my back. This being said, a year ago I could barely walk and my family, friends, and employer were afraid of losing me. A year later, I'm walking normally, living in my dream home that I purchased a day before I hit 8 months of diagnosis and LIVING with cancer. Cancer tried to stop me, but thanks to Dr. Bruce Bank and his amazing team, we've found the solutions to the problems that have made living with cancer easier. Lastly, there is also this misconception about where you get treated and that some locations aren't as good as others. I'm here to put that to rest with Northwest Oncology. While it's Northwest Oncology, don't let the name fool you, the Oncologists communicate with multiple hospitals. For example: my Oncologist communicates with Oncologists from Loyola, to Northwestern, to UIC, etc. The Oncologists at Northwest Oncology are constantly looking for new treatments to help their patients. I've never seen a group of doctors so motivated to help their patients live than I have here. These Doctors are always going to conferences, learning about new drugs, speaking with companies that create the drugs needed for cancer patients. They are always keeping an eye out for studies that may better assist patients. So please remember that you can't judge a book simply by it's name because if you do, you may be missing the best part of what is in the pages.

When I got home from the hospital I immediately hired a Cancer Navigator out of UCLA to find out where to go for oncology care. She did some research and gave me 4 names of oncologists in the USA who specialize in this stupidly rare cancer. I was thrilled to see one doctor- Dr. Mark Agulnik- practices in Chicago!!! At Northwestern. Dr. Agulnik and Northwestern were, at the time, out-of-network for me, but I didn't care. The expertise is completely worth it, and fun news is they are now in-network with my insurance plan. So I'm set! On January 14th, I celebrated a year of being tumor-free, "no evidence of disease", and I am so grateful to Dr. Agulnik, PA Sue, Nurse Elka, Bianca at Registration, and the whole team up on the 21st floor in Heme/Oncology! Well done, everyone!! I am sooooooo lucky to live near Chicago and Northwestern Hospital. And I'm so lucky that Dr. Agulnik and his fantastic team are able to manage my case. I'm immensely grateful. While the MDs & RNs here are all quite nice, I have a real problem with the fact that it's next to…read moreimpossible to reach someone here on the phone. You have to go thru a main number. The other day I called several times, listened thru the automated message & then each time sat on hold for quite some time before being disconnected! The following day I tried again at 4:30. And the message said they were not taking calls, that the "on call" team was covering. I thought this weird since their closing time is listed at 5:30, 7:30 & 9:30 pm- depending on the day. Finally, the next day I found a number for one of the nurses there & was able to leave a voicemail. I received a call back today. When I relayed the extreme difficulty I had trying to reschedule an appt to this support staff/scheduler I received a chuckle & was matter of factly told it was normal that no one answers the phones after 4:20 pm since that is when they stop taking calls & refer everything to the "on-call" team. This was news to us! Then why bother listing their "open" hours as being a full hour past that time, 2 hours past that time & 5 hours past that time-- depending on the day? So in summary, the telephone triage system is VERY inconvenient to navigate, and usually results in long wait times and disconnects/hang ups. And patients should know that they stop answering the phones for non-emergencies at 4:30- regardless of their posted hours.

Every visit has been truly lovely. Each staff member welcomes each patient, introduces themselves, explains what will happen at each step in the process, and provides little things for comfort like a warm blanket while napping in preparation for a contrast CT. Always calm, smiling, comforting and attentive. All appointments have started exactly on time which helps relieve anxiety as there is no stressful waiting. The facility is spotless and so beautiful. It does not feel like a hospital at all. Nice cafeteria for a snack afterwards. Free parking, too. Shout out especially to Ms. Lavin for a really extraordinary and helpful educational session today. If you should have a need for a medical genetics consult I highly recommend Christina Lavin! And thank you to medical assistant Janice for the quick and painless blood draw today. If you can please go somewhere else ,!you could die in the waiting room waiting for help and they wouldn't even notice. No one in the waiting room and I've been here for 3 hours just sitting.

My mother in law was diagnosed with cancer in the hospital and was referred to Dr Ghassan Jano at…read morethis clinic. Initially, we didnt have too much of a choice since she was late stage and needed to start chemo right away. After her first chemo infusion, she returned for bloodwork to check her blood counts. First, this place has a soda fountain for endless refills of pop. If you dont already know, fructose feeds cancer and soda is unnatural to begin with, its the LAST thing you want your patients to be gulping down, but I get repeat business is key here. During her visit, we were told her levels were very low, Dr Jano comes in and asks her if she feels well enough to get another treatment, oddly enough, she said yes and was told she would get another treatment that day. The nurse practitioner comes in and says there is no way, her blood counts were below 8 and no chemo would be performed. Jano comes back in,mouth filled with food, hand over mouth, he says her levels are low so no chemo. Seriously, duh?? Food falling out of his mouth is not only RUDE but unprofessional. My thoughts were racing to what the heck kind of outfit were they running there. Oh and you just feel icky and dirty; very unsanitary feeling. With a line still in the port in her chest, another 'nurse' comes in to take her to chemo, I swear, I am not lying! We told her that we were just told NO CHEMO today. Wow, yes folks, this all in one day over a span of an hour. As we are waiting to get the hell out of there, another 'nurse' grabs gloves to remove her blood draw line from her port, but is called out of the room by another woman. As she steps out to talk to her, she drops a glove. I watch her pick it up and then come back in to the room. Did she throw it out? NO, she proceeds to put it on and finish. I was too dumbfounded to say anything and was not happy with what had transpired and what I witnessed. In the next couple of visits, Jano tells us that he is concerned with her low blood counts and requests to do a bone marrow biopsy to see what is going on and why she is anemic. I mention that she did lose a lot of blood before going in to the hospital but he is insistent and continues to make these requests through my mother in law. I become concerned because I feel this is invasive and hasnt had enough time out of the hospital to rebuild her blood to begin with. But, we arent dr's, what do we know? I want to state that cancer is all new to us outside of hearing about it from others, so we tend to trust this person. I insist on a second opinion with her sons and decide to sit down with Jano at the next visit to express our concerns about this biopsy and to find out more about her cancer/ her options moving forward. We sit down and meet with him in a room, he has his arms crossed, defensively, in front of his chest and explains her cancer, "stage 3 grade B",and his need to do a bone marrow biopsy. We inform him that we want a second opinion and he seems a bit upset but he tells us fine, we should. I want to add that we did not feel fully informed, AT ALL. He goes straight to my MIL and tells her if she didnt want it to just say so, she didnt know what was going on. Second opinion finds she is positive for a protein which makes her cancer rapid growing and aggressive, not what she is being treated for AND her blood work is low because she has Stage III Renal Disease both of which we were NOT told by Jano! Second oncologist didnt recommend biopsy AND highly recommended a change in therapy right away!! I will also add that this clinic and staff were uncooperative, unprofessional and NEVER asked why we didnt coming back. Conclusion, I wouldnt bring my dog to this clinic. Run for your lives, folks! There is so much more but dont have the room and we dont take this lightly. We trusted that clinic and was mislead and were not completely informed. Also, they wouldnt give her the doctors notes stating that those belonged to Jano and not the patient. This review is long overdue and hope that others will take their loved ones elsewhere and remember, nutrition matters! Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food ~ Hippocrates

I wanted my medi-port accessed for blood draws and they couldn't do it, didn't have anyone that knew how and it just got worse from there. Even little St. Mary's in Janesville, Wisconsin can do port draws! The oncologist thought he was much better than he was (so he'll never be a GREAT doctor). I offered to take the day off, but he told me I'd be in and out in 10 minutes. I was there roughly 3.5 hours. Find a REAL cancer center, like Rush or UW.

He ordered a ct scan with contrast which I'm allergic to and I ended up having a true allergic reaction to it. He then ordered me another ct scan knowing I have a severe allergy to it.
