    Hotcakes and haloumi salad

My partner and I just stumbled across this place while running between Saturday morning inspections. So full disclosure, we were harried, hungry (maybe a bit hangry) and somewhat in a rush. When we walked by this place, we were struck by the calm decor and the packed seating. The menu sounded delicious (aussie/american breakfast) and so we ventured in. The food is very well presented and very good. I thought my stack of rhubarb hotcakes was amazing -- fluffy and sweet but not too sweet. My partner liked his dish, but there are other places around Chippendale (e.g. Something For Jess) that specialize in super fresh, locally sourced veg. The staff was extremely polite, attentive and all around pleasant. Great smiles and quick to respond to a hand raise. The only reason this place didn't get a full 5 stars is that the food took 35 minutes to get to us and that felt like a long time for the type of brunch dishes we ordered. But I'm definitely going back for the hotcakes... just maybe not on an empty stomach this time.

Great brunch place in Surry Hills! My friend, who has been living in Sydney for the past year or two suggested this place to my other friend and I, and I'm so glad she did! The venue itself is a little small, but since there wasn't a lot of people, we were seated right away. I got the berry hot cakes and a side of potato hash. The hot cakes were fluffy and delicious and was definitely my favorite dish there! The potato hash wasn't what I imagined it to be (since I'm from the States), but it was still delicious, nonetheless. Overall, the atmosphere is very relaxing and the food was equally amazing, as well!

This place is always busy! Every time I come for a bite to eat, I find myself glancing at my watch, counting the seconds to receive my food. Partially because I'm generally impatient, but mostly because I hate waiting for the delicious food that Cook and Archies serves. It's a friendly place with high ceilings, bright ambience, and snug tables. This place is in Surry Hills, not too far from Central station. I love eating breakfast here because the eggs are consistently and perfectly soft-poached. They are served with a sourdough toast and a choice of different sides. I usually opt for a simple side of greens. Lunch is also a terrific time to drop by Cook and Archies, especially if you're a fan of great sandwiches. There are always specials on the menu. The first thing I do when I come around lunchtime is check the blackboard to see if I'm craving any of today's offerings. There are also standard sandwiches like a hearty chicken club. I would also recommend the delicious smoked trout salad, served with capers, a soft poached egg, and a lemon grapefruit dressing. Even those who are rushed can enjoy a breakfast here. Last time I passed by, there was a takeaway special available only until 11AM: a bacon and egg roll with a coffee for only $7.50.

Very unique menu and good service, too - great place for a nice breakfast or brunch in Surry Hills! Loved the French Toast topped with fairy floss (aka cotton candy). Don't exactly remember what was on it (their menu changes frequently), but it had chocolate, fruit, and a raspberry (?) sorbet. All together, the different textures and tastes were really amazing. However, if you don't have a sweet tooth like I do, you may find this much too sweet. Note that their menu changes frequently!

Cook and Archies is a large cafe in Surry Hills towards central station, plenty of tables and options to eat in or take away. During the week there's plenty of salads and proteins to take away and also a range of juices and smoothies. For those who eat in, there's a wide menu and the breakfast is available all day on the weekend. Menu choices on the weekend include Zucchini and haloumi fritters, haloumi stacks, bacon buttyi (fried eggs, pimento salsa on a mill bun), Bircher, granola, ricotta hot cakes, potato Rosti, baked eggs, fetta and chilli scramble. Theres also lunch choices there if that suits you - chicken salad, roast lamb or spanakopita. I wanted the the special which was a beautifully fried ricotta cinnamon French toast topped with rhubarb, strawberries, miso orange curd maple (that you can pour yourself), marscapone and fairy floss! Unfortunately the busy nature of the day meant it sold out. The lovely waitress offered to do it on pancakes instead. Turned out they managed to do the French toast. Nice! It wasn't that crispy on the outside but tasted really nice and the flavours worked really well together. Coffees include a beautiful turmeric spiced latte, or green tea lattes for the instagrammers out there. Tea is by the amazing tea tonic brand - I'm always a fan of that. I had been communicating with them all week as I wanted to come in when the 3D latte barista was on and they said it was today. Turned out the regular wasn't there - but the other guy did a pretty good job of it. Love my latte art. Thanks - great place guys.

Nice and lovely place. It's a bit crowed on weekends though. Beautiful 3-D coffee. Mushroom melody was super tasty.

The café occupies the corner of Garden st and Henderson Road and is industriously styled with cool marble and pink interior and a hanging garden. There's plenty of space inside and out, so I you won't be waiting long for a table. Serving Toby's estate coffee and a range of modern Australian dishes for both breakfast or lunch, as well as some sweet treats, is a popular café with the locals and visitors to the area alike. I've visited now on more than one occasion and the café is continuously striving to perfect their menu offerings. A group of us dined on this day to sample a number of the menu choices. The Grumpy's special of chili scrambled eggs were presented atop sourdough bread and a side of heirloom carrots, a heatlhy and wholesome meal. The winner of the day, and also one recommended to us was the Green Pea Smash with burrata and prosciutto. A great combination of flavours. From the sweets menu, we went for the Fig Brioche, topped with macadamia, honey, ricotta and vanilla ice cream (in place of the regular fairy floss). There were a few fruits topping it and would love to have a few more. The Grumpy's granola and pannacotta is also not only beautiful, but delicious and served with a raspberry pannacotta. Could be a sweet or breakfast ;) The venue also serves the famous cronuts (a mix of a doughnut and croissant, filled with a range of insides like cream, Nutella, caramel and topped with oreos etc. Surprise yourself. The guys at grumpy's are always friendly and hospitable. Make sure you pay them a visit.

We were there for the lunch menu and there are chicken or beef burgers with fries, pre prepared salads (plus you can add a protein) or the crispy skin salmon. We ordered the beef burger which was an excellent burger as the meat pattie was extremely nicely cooked, tender inside, topped with crispy bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato and a siracha sauce sitting inside a toasted bun. The flavours worked nicely together. It came with seasoned fries. We also got the lovely crispy skin salmon with a salad - the rocket, chickpea, cauliflower one. Given that they are already made, the cauliflower was a bit moist but still tasty. Food came quickly by if you're just buying takeaway, there is also pre prepared sandwiches, frittata, muffins and cookies. They also sell a range of vegan slices. Coffee is campos and brewed nicely, the chai was also excellent. They offer incentives for bringing your own cup, which I like to see cafes doing this. Overall, a great addition to the area.

I went here today for the first ever Yelp Elite event with DOGGIES and I can promise you we all loved it. I know I was fortunate to get to sample quite a few things from the menu, and I appreciated the stellar service we received, but what really made this stand out was the quality of the ingredients. The bacon, caramel, I don't know what else... shut up... just take my money already... french toast was out of this world. Now, you have to understand, french toast is my most favorite brekkie item in the world, so when I tell you this was the best french toast I have ever had, believe me, it was GOOD. But it doesn't end there, oh no... The coffee was a single origin roast that was smooth and delicious, so I give them big points for making a great flat white (essential to my morning routine). The other items that I sampled, including a quinoa dish with the delightful name of "Birdy Num Num" (kudos to the Peter Sellers' reference, I got it and had a good chuckle), something called "Cinderella's dish" with a poached egg and pumpkin, and a few other items, were all tasty and creative. Did I mention how fresh everything was? It was obvious that this is a place where the food is being made with love and care, I love it when all the details come together. And, of course, I would be remiss if I did not mention what a great time Rufus had. Rufus is a fussy, and hyperactive 15-month-old Mini Doxie. He loved the "puppachino" and the camraderie... In fact, he still hasn't fully recovered from this morning's outing... so that's another yelp of approval for you.
