At opening that morning, members were commenting that the pool area smelled bad. The smell was noticeable before anyone knew why. Then members discovered what appeared to be a piece of human feces literally floating in the swimming pool. Members found it--not staff. That is what I cannot get past. Accidents happen, and I am not blaming a facility because someone had an accident in a public pool. What concerns me is that we were allowed into the aquatic area, people were already commenting on the foul smell, and members ultimately discovered visible fecal material floating in the pool. How was that not caught before opening? Afterward, I contacted Fitness Center Manager Michael Jimenez in writing because I wanted to understand what happened before I ever considered getting back into that water. I specifically asked when the pool had been inspected, when staff became aware of the contamination, whether an incident report was created, what the water/chemical readings showed, how the pool was disinfected, how long it remained closed, when it reopened, and what was being done differently going forward. I never received substantive answers to those questions from Fitness Center management. Instead, UNC Health Southeastern Patient Experience responded. They acknowledged the June 27 incident, called it an "isolated and unavoidable event," assured me that it was "immediately and appropriately addressed," and told me the hot tub was unaffected. But they expressly declined to provide the additional information I requested. That response actually made me less comfortable. The accident itself may have been unavoidable. Feces floating in the pool until MEMBERS discover it at opening is a completely different issue. And telling me it was handled appropriately after it was discovered does not answer the question of how members were allowed into the aquatic area before it was discovered. I wasn't asking for anyone's name or private information. I wanted basic answers about the sanitation of a pool I was paying to use. The pool and hot tub were essentially the sole reason I purchased this membership. I have not returned since that morning, and I ultimately referred my concerns to Environmental Health for independent review. I really wanted management's response to reassure me enough to return. Instead, I was given a general assurance while my actual questions about the inspection and sanitation process went unanswered. For a facility where people are literally getting into shared water, that is not good enough for me.
