All the little ballerinas are getting ready for their June recital at Jones Hall.

This is hands down the best dance school is town. Cookie Joe has such a big heart and is very talented and knowledgeable in all types of dance. My daughter is in her second year of ballet and she loves Ms Cookie and Ms Tran her instructors. There is structure, rules and the children learn discipline. Hard work is required and expected from all dancers who strive to be their best. She sets the bar high for her performers and it gives them a goal to reach for. The school is so clean and orderly. Ms Debbie the front desk manager keep everything in line. Programs and recitals are always professional, organized & well put together. I wouldn't dream of having a different school for my daughters ballet instruction. As long as she is interested in dance, we will be here!

She's even instructing her 1 year old brother on it, ha! The patience that Ms Cindy exudes is that of mother Teresa. I for one couldn't handle 10 three year olds in the evening with all their attitudes and frequent bathroom trips but she does so with grace and ease. There is also a viewing window for all the family to observe their little one dancing. Super friendly and approachable staff. It seems dancers start here and continue all through high school. Everyone is very passionate about what they do!

I told them over the phone she has never been to daycare and would have anxiety going to class. I was assured Ms. Cindy was great and they have experience with handling toddlers and the hardest part was for the toddlers to leave their parents but not to worry they know how to handle it and come the next day for a class. Well there was no introduction let alone communication about this and the teacher asks as class starts is she new? I say yes and she grabs my crying daughter into the studio. My daughter cried the entire class. The teacher would stand over my daughter when she was crying which is an intimidating act to a sitting toddler. After class I ask the teacher about class and she points at my daughter and says, "she can tell you." Well my daughter is 3 and all she was capable of telling me was the teacher was mean and told her to stop yelling. The teacher asked to speak to me after class. But instead of privately speaking to me, she proceeds to very loudly in the lobby in front of all the other students and parents start to ask private questions very loudly and lecture very loudly on expectations in her dance room. Understandable but absolutely not a discussion to be had in front of the entire studio. No empathy or understanding that we are just getting her comfortable in public in this pandemic. No masks worn by any staff. Just very angry, upset, disappointed in how my child and the entire situation was handled and we will not be returning to this studio after our treatment.

My heart is broken over this. Fret not. The old owner and chef has a new school - DAA Dance Academy. Send your kids there to learn from instructors who has a passion for dance and teaching. ===================================================== My review of the original Mitsi Dancing School: LOVE LOVE LOVE...Love the school. Love the teachers. Love all the memories I shared here. I'll fully disclaim my bias - I grew up in this dance school. However, being biased doesn't mean I'm wrong. Mitsi Shen is one amazing woman and dance instructor. She's dedicated decades to passing on her passion and technique in dance (ballet and Chinese dance). She hires very well trained teachers and shows extreme professionalism and patience to groom each student that has a heart to learn. It was like a family there. I made life long friends in my 13 years at the dance school and went from being a fidgeting tomboy to loving the art of dance. To the moms concerned with repetition, I'd say that dance training (similar to other trainings) involves a lot of repetition. Your princess might be doing chases and plies until she's 5 (and thereafter I'm sure). But she will improve each year and eventually she'll have strong muscles from the repetitions and move on to leaps and turns. Ballet is a great foundation for other styles! You can't go wrong sending your kids here! ...And it is my humble opinion that all little girls should dance! =D

The teachers are some of the best in their field. They are active and involved and teach and correct like you truly matter to them. The highlight of the summer was having the opportunity to learn from and dance with Lauren Anderson! I ended up taking dance at UH for the fall semester, so unfortunately I have not been back to dance here. The owner and founder, Sherese Campbell, taught the ballet class we were in. She's inspiring and really makes you want to dance better. The students are awesome, some of them are City Dance Company dancers and they are just as inspiring. Our summer intensive class ranged from teenagers to adults in their 30's-40's. The summer intensive classes are cool because you do (for example) ballet one week and hip-hop another week (for the first 1.5 hours) and then like yoga or tap for the second 1.5 hours. Intensive classes are usually from 9 AM - 3 PM, but I only went from 9 AM - noon and it was $150/week vs. $250/week. Currently don't have time/money to take intensive classes again, but would love to go back soon. It's pretty convenient if you live near Rice/ West U. If you are unsure about anything or have reservations, Sherese is always willing to help and encourage you!
