Zurich, Switzerland Great Local Supermarket Near Our Airbnb! We had just arrived in Zurich and needed some essentials ~ shampoo, conditioner, water, snacks, and of course, some beer. Luckily, this supermarket was just a short walk from our Airbnb. The store is well-stocked with everything from fresh produce to ready-to-eat meals. We were pleasantly surprised to find a machine that makes fresh orange juice on the spot - my SO was so impressed, he grabbed one right away! I wandered over to the chocolate aisle and was absolutely overwhelmed (in the best way). They had good deals too. So many options! I had a tough time deciding what to bring back for friends. You can pay with either card or cash, and we found the employees friendly and speaks good English. The store was never crowded during any of our visits, which made shopping even more pleasant. Definitely a convenient and well-run spot if you're staying nearby! It's very near the train station. It's clean and organized. read more

Yelp Review 2026 #73: This Coop is big and has everything. It's within walking distance from my hotel so it was very convenient to stop here and get snacks and drinks. It's open early and open til late (6am-10pm is late). They're one of the few businesses that's open on Sundays. Switzerland is known to be the most expensive country to visit which is absolutely true. Most go to Coop as a "hack" by buying food here instead of going to restaurants. Food is affordable here. They have deli meats, jamon Iberico, baked goods, arancini, cakes, pastries, pizza, sushi, sashimi, cups/ bowls of fruit, etc. I came here the first time to grab snacks like chips, Barebells and drinks. They were giving away protein shakes right next to the checkout counters. You do have to pay for shopping bags. If you need utensils, you have to pay for that too. The second time I was here was to get bandaids. The staff was helpful in pointing me to the right direction. Third visit was to compare prices for chocolates. I got Lindt chocolates for cheaper at Lindt Home of Chocolate. read more

Coop has a large presence in Switzerland. Most of the shopping I did in Zurich was at this grocery store. It's located close to the main train station. The store is big and carries everything you may need. It is rather crowded though with lots of shoppers. I was able to grab dinner here and some food souvenirs to bring back. read more

Huge fan of this large supermarket in the middle of the city. Restaurants here have high prices, slow services and heavy food (fondue, raclette, schnitzel with fries, Zürich Geschnetzeltes with rosti, sausage). In contrast, the super market was only slight more expensive and very high quality. I made multiple meals out of a loaf of bread, some foie gras, clotted cream, smoked salmon, cheese and chocolate. I didn't feel so heavy afterwards, and it was easy to bring this stuff along for a picnic during a hike. I discovered that the butter here is mostly not salted, and that I don't like Swiss cheese unless it's melted. I would steer away from the pre-made sandwiches. They were serviceable but nothing to write home about. read more

Coop is your standard grocery store but seems like they had much more variety and options than the ones back home. I wanted to pick up Some fruit and snacks as my hotel room had a refrigerator. They had a good size produce area. Picked up some strawberries & oranges, Gruyere cheese & some Lax with some bread. An extensive selection of cheese and a hot prepped food area with some good variety. Also, not that I could cook it, the meat and seafood looked fresh and they also had dry aged steaks on display . Pretty extensive deli meats and cheese isle. Checkout was fast and painless with self checkout option available. Like most shops, restaurants in the area they are closed Sunday. Right across Central station so a great location to serve all of the nearby travelers! read more

Great market right outside the train station. Got a hot meal for 15 francs and i was able to pay w euros. Food is tasty and the market has everything you might need. Very convenient and for Zurich, affordable which means still expensive. You can also buy your chocolate here for half the price the little shops out there. read more

The Coop near the Hauptbahnhof is one of the largest in the city - as far as the grocery store area is concerned. However, this Coop is just a supermarket and lacks the other amenities of many other locations. I enjoyed grabbing pastries here in the morning before setting off on the days' adventures. It's much more practical and reasonable than spending 10+ CHF on a coffee and pastry from Starbucks around the corner! For lunch, there's a large spread of ready-made sandwiches, sushi, and salads to "grab and go" which is also a good idea for the traveler on a budget. read more

These are the grocery stores where you should do all your souvenir shopping. A couple of years ago a local Swiss fellow gave us advice that the best chocolate is actually just the store bought coop brand.....he wasn't kidding. We have sampled the high end sprugli and the coop brand and I really think the basic grocery store chocolate is just as good at half the price. We loaded up on chocolate bars of all varieties. You can also buy hot chocolate and coffee here. On this trip we learned that Switzerland actually exports more coffee than chocolate...who knew! read more

A fine (if somewhat cavelike) Coop right near the main train station. Much wider aisles and lower-pressure than the HB Migros, and they've got alcohol --- not a huge selection, but did find a reasonable Äpfelwein without extra sugar (Ramseier, in a 1.5-liter party bottle). They are open later than most grocery stores, and seem to be running an experiment with being open on some Sundays --- they're open this Sunday but not next. I hope it'll be a success and they'll do that regularly, but no promises from the staff yet. Not entirely sure why it felt like a cave --- I don't remember the ceilings being especially low, perhaps the lights were dim? I don't know, I got my groceries and wandered off to my tram. read more

One of the busiest Coop in town. Often you find items on sale in refrigerated section or bread area. If you want something bargain, stop by around 9pm on Saturday. A lot of items will be 50% off since it's closed on Sunday. Freshly baked bread is always great reason to stop by. read more

Lots of cigarettes to choose from above the check-out! Multipacks of good chocolate, mountains of Toblerone and other things. Had sushi, hot snacks, pastries, fondue sets, a well stocked supermarket! Queuing is more logical than the one in Lucerne. read more

I have a very long and special relationship with this supermarket. Acutally it is a love-hate realtionship. The location is just wonderful. Right at the main station, well accessible with bus and trams. They have a big selection of fresh food, even a fish and meat counter. If you plan a party there's enough booze for a football stadium. And also applies to the shopping experience: crowed like a football stadium crammed in a fish bowl. But they have amazing hours. Except. Here it starts. It's closed on Sundays. Yes, there are days where one has to rest, take a break and stop shopping. Especially sales staff needs breaks, too. But it is right at the main station which is the shopping area to go to on Sundays. Isn't it? I'm sure there is a legal issue and they are not allowed to be open Sundays but this still allows me to get upset anyways ;) More on the love-hate: This building just shows a great game when it comes to unite contradictory characteristics. It is at the heart of Zurich but it is just pure ugliness. Right next to this building is a bridge with a beautiful view over Limmat river, the old town and you see the Grossmünster Towers and maybe even those cute little boats from public transportation. A lot of tourists take pictures there. But I am asking myself how can the city let such an ugly heart keep beating right next to such beauty? Something funny I once noticed when I was recycling glass aka trashing loads of empty wine bottles. At the back of the supermarket is the entrance to some police station. How ridiculous is that? The ceiling of the supermarket is very low. I do not really like low ceilings. And ever since I learnt that there is a police station in this simple construction I can't get over two images: policemen sitting on top of fresh oranges and that Zurich doesn't appreciate its police since they just cram them in a hut that mainly is filled with a supermarket.. :D This supermarket originally was a provisional solution for Globus, the enemy of Coop, as it is owned by Migros. Did I mention this is Coop's enemy?? So the building itself is called Globus makeshift and was built back in 1961 for Globus which only used it for 5 years. Globus thought this building was way too ugly for obvious reasons and left as fast as possible. Since 1968 Coop is in this "provisional solution" which has its 55th anniversary this year. Amazing, isn't it? Thats how Swiss architecture is. Even a provisional solution last longer than half a century ;) I think by now I explained how this building pains me but I always KEEP COMING BACK! Five stars for grocery selection even though they devote an entire aisle to Lindt chocolate. Produce is fresh, dairy selection huge, bakery and meat counters are just o.k. However, they offer many grocery items that the smaller coops don't. When compared to the Jelmoli or Globus food halls this place holds its own. Warning: IT. IS. ALWAYS. CROWDED. And the cashiers rudely pretend to not speak any English. read more
