One of the features that attracted us was their in-cabin fireplaces, so we thought we would splurge a bit and pay the high price. Come to find out, the fireplaces are "closed" each summer until Sept. 15th, something that is NOT mentioned on their website. We didn't find this out until we were locked into our reservation. If they had acknowledged that their website should state that their fireplaces are seasonal and that they would correct it, it wouldn't have bothered me so much. Instead I was told "you should have asked". On the first day of our stay, it was low 50's with strong winds and rain. A fire in the fireplace would have been a nice option. Other complaints: the WIFI barely registered, the mattresses seemed to be on the inexpensive side, and the sheets were cotton/poly blend. On the plus side, the cabins are clean and modern, and the beach is nice.

Access to 4star teachers if you want to improve your technique. Comfortable rest areas. The price? Extremely reasonable, and I'm told they are rated one of the best Nordic areas in the country! Because of its distance--several hours from cities like Madison--I recommend combining a visit with other Northwoods attractions. A great option is to stop here while exploring the Apostle Islands or the Bayfield area. Once inside the park, follow the main road past the ranger station until it ends at the parking lot, where you'll find restrooms and the Doughboy Trailhead. This is a beautiful park and well worth the stop, especially if you plan it alongside other northern Wisconsin adventures.

The other thing I really liked was the location. Lake Gogebic is a pretty good-sized lake, and wind can make a difference. At Timbers, you have direct access to some protected water, so even if the wind kicks up, you can still get out and fish. It warmed up in the afternoon but was nice a cool for sleeping. We stayed with another couple on our site and it was a tight squeeze. The sites here are very small so keep that in mind if you are traveling with a large group. In order to get a spot right on the lake you have to book 6 months in advance and it is totally worth it. You can hear the waves crashing onto the beach from your tent and it is well worth booking a trip so far in advance. We stayed in spot #1 for a four day trip. It was a short walk down to the beach where we watch the sunrise every morning. The bathrooms were nice and well cleaned. There is a camp sponsor who stays a month at a time on the campground to help organize events. My only complaint is the fire pits didn't have grates or anything for you to cook over so that meant becoming buddy-buddy with our neighbor to borrow supplies. The hiking was amazing. There were plenty of good trails within a 20 min drive of the area. We had such a good time exploring the area. I will stay that the trails are extremely muddy after a good rain but after two days they dry out pretty well. We didn't explore any of the restaurants but there are several within 30 mins drive. Overall I can't wait till we can go back to this campground and I would highly recommend this mountain range to anyone in the Midwest.
