Had lunch here with a friend one cold February day and really enjoyed this light and airy space on the roof of No 1 Poultry, just a couple of minutes walk from the Bank of England. Too cold to sit outside though the smokers were braving it under the heaters, and they provide blankets too! Our set price lunch on the Evening Standard deal - an annual promotion worth looking out for - was very good value though trying to find a bottle of wine under £30 was hard. We ate in the Grill which is less formal than the restaurant and right by the bar. Tables next to the window look out on the terrace and the service was good. This lavish French eatery and bar sits perched on top of 1 Poultry, in the heart of the Square Mile. The view from the top of here is stunning, and if you're in to architecture and urban development this will be heaven for you. There is a large, smart indoor seating area and many outside tables on the heated terrace. The waiting staff are incredibly attentive and helpful; if they see you getting a bit nippy come nightfall as you're enjoying your Rioja outside they'll offer you a blanket! During the summer you can see many City workers basking in the sunshine, quaffing champers. It is very expensive here, and is primarily filled with City workers entertaining clients of each other. Well, with house wine £35 a bottle, it's hardly surprising! If you're feeling flush, or have a date you a) want to impress or b) want to be wined and dined then this is a pretty good bet. Little known outside the City's financial quarter, this is one of the best and most interesting restaurants in London. Accessed by discreet lifts on the ground floor of the unloved eyesore No 1 Poultry, one enters a magical rooftop garden and a calm, wide room with views over much of the City. Eyewateringly expensive and mouthwateringly good, a recent light lunch of a plate of fines de Claire and a vegetable tart washed down with a couple of glasses of house Sancerre knocked the top off £70. After a meal, stroll outside onto the round terrace (where you can also eat among the wisteria) and through a gate, and be amazed at the view from the carefully-tended lawn and the lookout folly at the point overlooking Bank. Haven't had the pleasure of eating here but have drunk (and been drunk) in the bar several times and always had a good night. The expansive roof terrace is great in the summer, and in the winter they usually have patio heaters to keep the place warm. It is table service only, even for drinks, which is great for lazy gits like me who hate standing at the bar. On the flip side you are out of luck if you can't find a table. We stumbled upon this restaurant, intrigued by the private elevator. There is a separate, clear glass elevator that takes you to the rooftop. Even for the brief ride, I enjoyed a brief conversation with strangers: two French women and two Armenian men that wanted to discuss why London had such dreary weather. We did not have reservations but we arrived before the crowd. This is a favorite for the financial professionals and their clients. I suppose this is why it is called "money rooster" or "golden cock?" The atmosphere is nice and the food is splendid. I ordered the salade de crabe, king crab with aubergine and pine nuts. I also ordered the suckling pig, which was very tender. There were three cuts on the plate, not sure which areas of the pig, but each had a distinct texture and flavor. Wine list is of course extensive. The bar is also inviting. They have an outside area where attractive Londoners grab expensive cocktails. If you find yourself in this area, it is a fantastic place. Could be romantic, as long as your date doesn't want to "trade up" for the many hedge fund millionaires that dine here. read more

Fab location and view (from viewing platform). The food and drinks are not cheap but priced about right for the area and location. When I visited the service was slow but it was extremely busy. My food was really tasty and cooked just the way salmon should be. My friends also really enjoyed their food. The portable card machine wasn't working which meant that we had to form a queue by the serving station to pay, not a huge grumble but the terrace has very limited standing space and I felt like I was disturbing other diners. read more

Accessed by a single elevator in an office atrium, you're whisked up to an absolutely delightful rooftop location with both indoor & outdoor dining. Serving up high quality french-influenced food, its worth a visit. Given its location in the heart of the City, its predominantly a business venue, but great for meeting up for a special occaision with friends who may be based in the area. read more

The dinner I had at Coq d'Argent highly disappointed me. The location is great, the view is awesome, but we should have stopped at drinks on the terrace, maybe with some bar snacks. The dinner was in fact mediocre, food wasn't tasty and the service was very poor. Not only waiters were slow to serve or notice that you were asking for they attention, but they weren't even very polite and kind. Prices are actually not bad for such a place and that explains why the dining room is so crowded. Taking off a few tables wouldn't really hurt the profit, and would make the atmosphere a lot nicer. However, if you still want to cater for so many people, please add some toilets! I never had to queue to use the toilet in a restaurant before and also not in a dirty ladies. By 10pm the ladies was messy with hand towels on the floor. Disappointing and definitely not worth it unfortunately. read more

I was there a few nights ago to celebrate my birthday. It was all that I thought it was. The service was good, staff was friendly. The food was delicious and the desert was fabulous. It isn't cheap but you pay for good quality food. The view from the rooftop was beautiful you can see the city from up there. I think the view would be better in the summer when you can dine outside on the terrace where you can enjoy the view to its full potential. It is a place I would recommend going and I would go back again. read more

Just what London dining is all about IMHO. The first time we went we had the restaurant to ourselves as it was a big rugby night, but usually its full of a great lively clientèle and has a very good atmosphere. The food is great, with lots of delicious little courses and petite amusès, and the wine list is top notch, with a great sommelier to make recommendations for your meal. Nowadays we go for a drink fairly regularly and its a great place to take friends and clients. read more

A very nice restaurant in the City. I came here on a rainy evening in March so didn't get to enjoy the rooftop terraces but I still recommend it highly as the views and atmosphere inside was so pleasant. My group had pre booked the set 3 course menu at £25 per person which was a good deal as the food was truly excellent. I chose the Mackerel starter, Duck main and Creme Brulee for dessert and every course was carefully made and very well done. The wine we chose was not very expensive but still very good. The only thing stopping a 5 star review is that the service was very slow in the beginning even though the restaurant was not busy, it took about 20 minutes to get our order in, but after that everything ran very smoothly. Prices were very high for extras; a bottle of mineral water at £8.50. The place tends to be less busy during the weekends which is a good time to get a deal from somewhere like toptable. read more

We went in this restaurant for Valentine's Day, as soon as we arrive they give us a menu and ask if we would like to have a drink, I asked for the wine menu but I had to ask twice after my starter arrived because they didn't come back .The food wasn't so bad ( if you go to the Acqua Shard is definitely much better and same price) but nothing special, I ate the fois gras and my girlfriend ate the crab salad which was very nice , as a second I choose a 28 days dry age beef fillet and instead the brought me the lamb rack ,I ask them why do they send me the lamb and they told me that was a mistake from the kitchen anyway I was hungry so I ate that . Anyway there were waiters that touch continuously their hairs, put back in the throuses the shirt infront of the client, dirty jokes between them, waiters almost running , so not what we were expecting from this place. At the end when I asked the bill they include on the bill the dry age beef fillet that I didn't ate !! So I had to call the waiter and let them correct it .. So at the end if I have to give a vote I'll say 6 the food and 1 the service .. This was my first and last time. read more

We wanted something special for our lunch get together over the Christmas period, and affordable. This place was a good choice for that. Really, really lovely, very relaxing and friendly, great buzzy atmosphere. Spacious tables, no banging elbows. The three courses set menu for £29 was very good value - for sublime masterchef food - had a lot of choices, which also included the dish of the day. We all had a different dish, and it was all delicious, all really nicely presented. I had the 63 degree free range British egg, smoked haddock and spinach for the starter, and it was perfection, followed by the almond and cacao nib venison, parsnip puree and amaretto sauce, which was also very tasty. All rounded off with some sublime desserts which included a Christmassy Yule Log. The wines were affordable, we chose the Chenin Blanc at £26 to accompany our meal. They even had gluten free bread when requested. Service was friendly, welcoming and unobtrusive, We had a table near the window, so saw some beautiful views. Would definitely recommend and need to go back when the weather is warmer to dine alfresco on the rooftop terrace. Great place for a special occasion. read more

You come here mostly for the City skyline view. So they close the gardens on Saturday at 9pm. Nobody tells you. They have a couple of hoods making sure you can't get out there. No problem when you sign the bill though. read more

I had to give them a 5 because of the overall experience I had here. I made reservations for a table of 18 for our wedding ceremony reception, which was a small affair. They had no problem letting me add guests as the list grew longer and called 2 days before to confirm the number of guests and the food menu. They also warned me that the service might be a bit slow with a larger party but I didn't notice at all, they were so attentive. With a party this large they do a set menu for the table and the choices were absolutely lovely. I had the game terrine to start, which was quite large and tasted the Escargot, which were also really good. The olive braised duck was delightful and the creme brulee was probably the best choice for dessert. Some others got the banoffee cheesecake and were a bit disappointed. The ambiance in the restaurant was great and had a quiet, classy feel but we didn't feel bad getting a bit loud as we were celebrating. The view is amazing and the outdoors terrace is a great addition to a really fabulous restaurant. I would highly recommend for any special occasion or date night. read more

Great for a civilized Sunday lunch away from the crowds.

When the weather is nice and it is summer time, this place is the place to go if you are in the City. Fantastic terrasses and views of the City, nice wines/oysters etc... Few bemols needs to be mentioned, quality of the food has decreased alot over the last few years. They used to make fantastic snaks in the bar area Charcuterie/Fromages and other plates of quality products, but their list is now more like burger/french fries - I recomand salmon calamaries and oysters which are always great there though. Regarding the restaurant, the same apply, quality has decreased and few dishes are just a bit of an insult to the clientele (they replaced duo de foie gras by terrine de fois which is now basically soem paté with pies and carrots!!!). Wine list is still great. Service is less good than it used to be, more approximative and clearly less proffessional. So I would say more of a place to have a drink rather than having dinner. I usually go to the Bond's for the dinner, which is just around the corner... read more
