Island Jeep & Coquí Car Rental - Vieques July 24, 2025 Great experience from start to finish! Communication was excellent and the customer service was outstanding. The location is just a few minutes' walk from the ferry, making it super convenient to pick up the Jeep. Waiting time was perfect, no long delays. The Jeep itself was great--AC worked perfectly and it ran smoothly the whole time. Gas was at 1/4 of the tank when we got it, but with a gas station just 5 minutes away, it wasn't a problem at all. Drop-off was just as easy--we left it right near the ferry. We truly enjoyed the island and had the chance to explore many beautiful beaches thanks to the Jeep. Everything was simple, stress-free, and perfect for me and my family. We really enjoyed our day and next time we visit Vieques, we'll definitely rent from them again. Thank you! read more

After making a reservation online I requested a location pin for the pickup location but was provided a pin for the Subway store near the ferry terminal. So after further research I came across Yelp reviews of reports involving fraud charges on accounts after booking with this company. I locked and closed my card immediately. I messaged the number requesting a cancelation which was approved. Now days later I just got a fraud inquiry from my bank asking if I repeatedly attempted to make a purchase at a retailer in South Carolina. Follow your intuition and do lots of research before making reservations online. Cheapest rate or fewer restriction is also a sign that its too good to be true!! the jeep we were given was in horrible running condition. the air conditione did not cool the car, the check engine lights were on and the tire pressure sensor lights were on. he told us that all he fleet are like that. then he charged us for inDurante even though we provided our own policy. very hard to communicate with them as they do do respond. there are many other places to rent a jeep on this island so look elsewhere so you don't get ripped off in 90 degree temperatures. read more

Like many others I received a fraudulent charge on my credit card less than 24 hours after making my rental car reservation.

I rented two jeeps from Coqui Rental from May 24-26, 2025, and it was an absolute nightmare. One of the jeeps was FILLED with trash (and coackroaches!), and the other jeep had a non-working beeper, making it a hassle every time we tried to lock or unlock it. But here's the WORST part: after returning the jeeps, they stole my credit card information and charged me $650 claiming I had FOUR parking tickets -- without ever showing me a single piece of evidence! They just made up these charges out of thin air. When I tried to call, they never answered the phone -- completely dodging me. This company is dishonest, shady, and takes advantage of customers by playing with their money. This will NOT stay like this -- I will fight this, and they will soon be receiving a visit from my lawyer for FRAUD. Stay far, FAR away from Coqui Rental. The next day my credit company sent an alert for a transaction from Demark. We arrived and they said we did not have a reservation. No cars available and blamed us saying we should have read our confirmation email closer indicating it was not a real confirmation email. The lady greeted everyone with the same response I received so this is clear their normal operating practice. What a scam. My daughter used them on our trip while in Puerto Rico. Vehicle was not what we reserved. We had to turn away the first vehicle because apart from it being smaller vehicle than we reserved, it was in a terribly banged up condition. Second vehicle was still smaller but at least in a so so condition. read more

I saw the negative reviews but they were years old so I imagined something had to have improved. Terrible idea, definitely nothing has improved. My experience with this company was the most negative I've ever had with any company, period. Here's why: - Your email confirmation price is not honored in person. Upon arrival, they wanted to charge us 35% more than the amount we had confirmed months earlier online. When we questioned this, the person behind the desk began yelling at us that the confirmation does not guarantee any kind of pricing and that the confirmation number is not the same as a reservation number. She went on to accuse us of causing her her to stay an hour late at work for which she would not be paid (even though she had already added an extra $8.50 "extra hour fee" to the bill). The reason we were late is that even though I had reserved airport pickup, she would not come get us. A kind fellow at the airport gave us a lift because there were no taxis at the airport and we had no cell phone reception! So yes, we were late. -If you have an issue you cannot reach anyone by phone. You can only communicate by text or email and this is obviously is not ideal when issues arise. - The cars are in terrible condition Ours was pretty rough, had a check engine light to come on the following morning. We reached out by text and email with no reply. When I went back to the office in person to request a different car, none were available and I requested a refund for the remaining time on the rental. At this point the same person tried to pressure us into keeping the car, stating we would be unable to rent from any other companies (due to high season), but we had no issue getting a car from a different company. -If you need a refund from them for some reason, it can take up to 7 days for the refund to process. -If you schedule airport pickup, you cannot count on it! It is my impression that Island Jeep Rental and Coqui are the same company (all paperwork I received from Coqui states Island Jeep Rental). If you look at other reviews, you will note some of the same issues. Save yourself some heartache and precious time wasted on this beautiful island and avoid this company. Me and my girlfriend rented a car at this place and it was the worst experience during our whole Puerto Rico trip(and we've been to a lot of different places - from Rincon to San Juan and Culebra). First of all we've rented a 2 door jeep for two days. When we arrived at the location they wanted to give us 4 door jeep for one day at a higher daily price and were trying to explain it with their booking system (saying that it was on my reservation in their system ). I had to show them confirmation email that I've received from them with the correct details. Then they agreed to give me that 4 door jeep for 2 days with a daily rate of 2 doors jeep. The favor that I didn't ask for but ok I'll take it - that's what I was thinking. The car itself was very old, half of the dashboard warning signs were on (abs, traction control and airbag were not working), seatbelt on the driver seat was barely working. But as long as it drives it's fine - I was thinking. It's an island and I wasn't expecting 5 star service. Part of the experience - I was trying to stay positive. But then adter we started to drive this car, one problem came after another. Low oil level, change now - the warning was on the dashboard.Then dashboard's engine warning sign turned on. Then it just started to turn off and on (the dashboard) while we were driving. Finally when we were in the middle of nowhere driving from one beach to another it just suddenly stopped working (the whole car) - dashboard turned off, neither gas or break were working. I had to turn it off completely and started to try to turn it on but it didn't work. We've spent about 5 minutes trying to turn it on. Finally we were able to start it again and decided immediately drive back and return this car as it became dangerously to drive this car. When we arrived back the office was closed (it was around 1pm) - we called multiple time in the phone and after about 15 mins they answered the phone and the lady told us that she is in the airport delivering the vehicle to another client and that she doesn't have any cars to replace our car. So we asked for refund and she agreed. When she came back she started to yell at us that there were no complaints about this car before and that's our problem that we couldn't drive this car. I said whatever just give us refund please and we will leave. And then she asked if we filled out with gas before returning. I said no way I'm gonna do this because it's not my fault that they failed to provide the service for us that we've paied for l. We already wasted couple hours because of that that we could use for something more enjoyable. She said that she is going to check gas level and charge us for it. I said good luck - I'm gonna call my credit card bank and explain the whole situation and they willingness cancel this charge anyway. She was pissed off and very rude but refunded money and didn't charge for the gas at the end (at least at the time I'm writing this review). So I'd say avoid at all cost this place. Maybe they have better cars and you'll be lucky. But customer services is terrible. read more

This car rental is the helper of robbers!!! They are selfish and mean to visitors. To protect their car window they did something to disable the lock of one car door so that local robbers don't need to break their car windows to steal people's properties from their rental car! How we found out? We were so lucky that our Airbnb allowed us Checkin earlier right after we got the rental car and before we drove around the island. When we asked the Airbnb owner it is safe or not if we lock our luggage in the car. The Airbnb owner told us the nasty secret of rental cars about the disable door lock on this island. I could't believe it until we checked and verified it. The lock of the sliding door on the right side of our rental minivan has been disable and it was not easy to notice. I don't know other car rental did the same thing or not, but this one did!!! read more

We reserved two jeeps two months in advance for the weekend of December 27-30 for our family of 8 including a child and a dog. On the morning when we were to arrive just as we were about to board the ferry, they called us and told that they had no vehicles to rent and that there was nothing they could do. We were left without transportation for the weekend, relying on taxis while carrying all of our bags, and risking our child's safety. It completely ruined our stay and experience on the island. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT USE COQUI CAR RENTAL. It was the worst rental car experience I've ever had. The tan Jeep Wrangler we received had two flat tires. One of which had a complete failure due to rot on the sidewall. All of the equipment needed to change the tire was also not in the Jeep. If it wasn't for two good samaritains would would have been stranded without service. We tried calling the business after getting to a location with a signal but received no call back. The other 3 tires also had rot on the tread and were bald. This business is going to get someone seriously injured one day due to the lack of maintenance they put into their vehicles. Unless you have a death wish please do not rent from Coqui Car rental. read more

Coqui Car Rental/Mayra were superb! Finding a SUV/Minivan to seat 6 passengers is no easy task on Vieques. We did not want 2 jeeps so I sent several notes to companies asking for last minute minivan availability and Mayra was quick to respond. The van had it's fair bumps and scrapes, but it was clean, full tank of gas and gave us no issues for our 5 days. We drove it all over the island...we did not take it off road, but a few gravel roads were no issue. Mayra met our ferry right in front of the terminal making it a quick get away to our final destination. On the day of departure, she met up with us in the same place. Couldn't have asked for a more care free rental car experience. Thanks for taking such good care of me and my family. read more

If your on vieques you need a jeep. I rented from them and had a great experience. They are a lot cheaper than the others. I had a 2 door wrangler for 55 per day for 2 days. With tax it is 120 and I used 18 liters of gas which was 16$. I loved my jeep and this island. If you get the burgundy one it always says the door is a-jar in Spanish but don't worry we never fell out. Also go to red beach, all the way at end to the right the waves are crash really hard and it's great for body surfing. read more

If only i could give 0 stars I would . Its not a car rental its a scam shed! First of all We payed for one kind of car for 2 days and they tried to give us other car with differet price for only a day instead. It seemed weird . But whatever ,we resolved it ,payed the difference- got the other car (cz they didnt have anything else despite the fact three made a reservation in advance). We Went to the other side of the island to the beach.... it was a big thing that ate gas like a tank! All the possible dashboard lights turned on Every time we park it , it was a problem to start it . Its a low season, no people on the beach, no phone service.... was a little bit scary . When It barely turned on again we decided that the time has come to return this "car" ,and headed to the rental office wasting time that we could spend on the beach relaxing! There was no one in the office. After some time lady came and told us that she will Gave us a refund because that was the only car the place had at the moment ( it is a low season by the way). She asked us if we refilled the car with gas.what?!? I didnt expect question like that and was shocked. Then she said she will charge us for the gas that we wasted!! Quick recap-we wasted our time on the island on a broken car and had to refuel it? Really?? There are other car rentals on the island so avoid this one like the plague. read more

My girlfriend and I rented a jeep from Coqui for several days, and it was the defining moment of our trip to Vieques in more ways than one. While driving down some paths on a forest reserve, we took a path that led to a pristine beach. Although there were no signs or barriers, this wasn't the best path, so we started backing up after about 10 seconds of driving and got stuck in the sand. Dumb mistake, I know (although you'll see a jeep sitting happily on a beach in a lot of the company's pictures). What follows is worse. We called Coqui to let them know we were stuck, and they agreed to send someone out to help. The guys from the company took well over an hour to get out there (Vieques is a really small island). These guys had more confidence than competence. First, they tried to get the jeep out with another jeep and a flimsy belt. When that didn't work, they decided to ram the jeep from behind and busted its tail light. The Coqui guy who broke the tail light cheerfully informed us that he knew the person who made the repairs, so the busted tail light wouldn't cost us anything (more on that later). At the point, we just wanted a tow truck, but they wanted to save us the money and trouble... The Coqui guys left us with the jeep and took another hour or so to bring back a chain. That didn't work either. Along the way, they also locked the keys in our jeep and had to pry open the roof to get the car unlocked. So, that seemed like the time to get a tow truck. Instead, they left us on the now dark beach with the rising tide for another couple hours (we had to stay with the jeep at all times, since anything that happened to it would be our responsibility). Instead of a tow truck, a pickup truck joined us on the beach. That plus shovels didn't work either. The original Coqui guys finally came back with a tow truck, but the driver didn't want to go out to where we were (understandable, because the tide was touching the tires of the jeep by that time). At that point, we thought about just contacting the police who might actually be able to help us, but the Coqui guys informed us that we were actually on a protected preserve and would have to pay a huge fine if the authorities found out (although they never mentioned the amount). So, we waited some more alone on that beach. Finally, they found a tow truck willing to come out. By this time, we were getting desperate and hoping that the ocean wouldn't swallow the jeep. Under the direction of about half a dozen guys, the tow truck pulled us to firmer sand. The teamwork was impressive, but it really wouldn't have been necessary if we'd just called a tow truck on our own in the first place. Also, part of the jeep's roof flew off while we were driving back home (from the Coqui guys prying it open while getting out the keys that they'd somehow locked in). Luckily, no one was behind us, and we were able to put that part back on the right way. After all was said and done, we'd spent 8 hours on the beach, and the Coqui guys wanted $400 for getting us off the beach (this was for them and not for the company). I eventually paid them that amount. When we returned the jeep, we were also told that our $500 deposit would be used to repair the busted tail light (even though their own guy broke it). I'm not sure how expensive that repair actually was (and the mandatory insurance that we bought apparently didn't cover it). At this point, none of that deposit has been returned, and Coqui has been unresponsive about sorting that out. The rental itself cost more than $300 for several days, so we're out over $1200 for choosing this company. Renting from Coqui was a mistake, and asking them for help was a mistake too. When I told the woman at the office that we would've been better off just calling a tow truck on our own, she said "yes, but you asked for our help." I pointed out that asking them for their help was what we were supposed to do. She agreed. "So, we're being punished for doing what we were supposed to do?" I asked. No real answer from her on that one. I'm giving them one star because they did sort of help us in a really backward way. Save yourself some time, trouble, and money by checking out another rental company. read more

DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE RENT FROM THIS COMPANY!!! About 4 sensors continued to beep the entire time we used the jeep including the seatbelt sensor. But that's not the worst of it! They quoted us $60 to rent a jeep for a day. They said they would not charge us a pick-up or drop-off fee if we walked from the ferry to their location to rent it. When we rented it all they said was don't bring it back with the entire beach in it. So we were careful to brush off our feet before getting in the vehicle and before we returned it we brushed off the seats. One seat was SLIGHTLY damp because we had been in the ocean but I had towel dried, put on dry clothes over my bathing suit, and also put a dry towel in the seat to keep the seat from getting wet. They charged us an extra $150 for the seat being just a tiny bit damp!! When I asked the lady what I was supposed to have done in addition to all the precautions I had already taken she said I should have taken off my bathing suit on the beach before I put on the dry clothes. I'm not sure what type of culture she is from but under no circumstance do I think it's appropriate to tell your customer she was supposed to strip naked on a public beach. The lady was EXTREMELY rude and when my boyfriend and I both tried to talk to her she was looking around the room like we weren't even there. Also, she charged us a $15 pick-up fee AND a $15 drop-off fee when we had already been assured we would not incur that fee. ALSO, the man who worked there swung open the back of the jeep as soon as we pulled up and our snorkeling gear fell out all over the asphalt, scratching both of our masks and he didn't even apologize! In total, ONE day of a jeep rental from these people cost me $300 and it was supposed to be $60. PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT THESE PEOPLE!!!
