I met Ms. Greek because she works with Scott, the owner of The Frame House in Oceanside. Scott has a wonderful eye, and is also knows how to save you money. In addition to some straight-forward framing jobs, I also had some old oil paintings that were grimy and a bit damaged. Scott had the business card for Ninya Lee Greek, who does appraisals, restoration and repairs. She met me at Scott's shop, which was very handy, so I didn't have to drive to Kearney Mesa. She took them to her own store to restore them, then brought them back to Scott's in Oceanside to be re-framed, after she had repaired and cleaned the three oil paintings. The oil paintings, which were almost 100 years old, looked AMAZINGLY better! Definitely worth the price to have them professionally cleaned and repaired! Scott and Ninya both thought the frames on the two smaller oils detracted from them. They were correct! When Scott selected new frames with a reddish tone, they made the little oil paintings pop! I already liked them, but now I love them! The large oil, by a relatively well-known artist, was really grimy. I had taken it to a different farmer's business in another town, but that framing business belatedly decided they couldn't clean the painting depite having held onto it for a long time (!). They also misplaced the original frame, which I am still waiting for them to find. Ninya did an amazing job of cleaning the painting. It, too, is now gorgeous, compared to its pre-cleaning and restoration. It had had a section where paint had come off, and someone had attempted to repair it in a really bad way. So both Ninya and Scott put in some time to make a wonderful repair. Ninya also appraised an Okinawanese wood block print, the larger oil, and a Chinese porcelain vase. She provided me with a notebook full of useful information about each piece, the certificates one needs to properly offer something for sale or to collect insurance in the event of a loss, and information related to insurance and selling one's art pieces. She also insisted I read everything while she stood by to answer any questions. I really wish I had taken before and after photos of how these items looked before being so greatly improved by Ninya's cleaning and repairs. But try and imagine what they looked like before -- not half as nice as now. I am going to see if I can at least post the before photos. Scott of The Frame House in Oceanside also deserves a lot of credit for. selecting better matting and framing, which truly enhanced each piece. I noticed that Ninya has some negative reviews. I should add that she is one of those " Unforgettable Characters" as mentioned in The Readers' Digests of old. She seems to know what she's doing (her C. V. is amazing), and at times gets caught up in the moment. I did get tired of her calling me a " trust fund baby" since I'm not, but that didn't have any bearing on the work she actually did. There is a word in Spanish called Ladrona (thief) she gives you invoices and signs them but at the end she gives another invoice saying is that thisb is officail invoice with price change and a price yearly price increase without notifying you but what she gives you signed is no good for her since the invoice she gives you now is what her accounted needs but what she signed and acknowledged payment now is not valid due to price increase and new invoice which was not disclosed read more

DO NOT HIRE - SCAM ALERT: A little background: My sister and I inherited some old family paintings we wanted to get appraised. We searched online and found Ninya as a local art appraiser. When we first called her it should have been a red flag, since immediately she was very abrasive and confrontational. She started off by asking us a million personal questions (most, honestly, that were none of her business) and accusing us of being telemarketers before we even had a second to ask her any questions. Every time we tried to talk, she spoke over us. We decided to hire her anyway because her background is quite extensive and well, you cant always get along with everyone. She came to do the appraisal. Picked out a few of our paintings that she was interested in and without inspecting the rest told us "they're only worth maybe one to two thousand, you should just donate them somewhere." She made multiple inappropriate comments, and talked way more during the time we had for the appraisal then she did actually looking at our paintings. She didn't even turn them around to see the certificate of authentications on the back. Nevertheless, we still decided to hire her to do a deeper appraisal for 3 of our paintings that she thought were worth a large amount of money. A week went by and we got a phone call from her (Sunday) that said we needed to get together again to chat about everything. Me, being a business owner myself, working 60 hours a week, mother to 4 kids, and currently moving, felt a little overwhelmed with having to schedule this meeting. I didn't have time to call her back that day, but had planned to. She called me again the next day super early in the morning- and again, I did not have time to call her back. She called my sister on the third day, yelling and told my sister off, and then proceeded to tell my sister that she was going to "burn our book". I called her back and she was immediately rude, demanded reasons as to why I did not call her back right away, and then began to tell me that we will not be working with each other again and she will not be refunding our $450. I believe she had no intent in actually working with us through to the end, and threw this dramatized fit to scam us out of our money. I repeat..... DO NOT HIRE THIS CON ARTIST! read more

She is rude, makes inappropriate comments, Hurried through without fully examining each piece of art and missed quite a few things, took a lot of money for services and then decided she was donee. Never gave us the information but kept our money. A few pieces of art she said just to get rid of and it turns out she just didn't look at them well enough. We paid $440 and since we could not answer the phone right when she called (moving, being slammed at work, being a parent, etc.) she said she was going to "burn the entire book." Even after we apologized for not getting back to her right then ( even though she does work for us) she was terrible on the phone and hung up on us. Please do not bring your business to Coronado Appraisals! They do not care about your art and only care about your money. She spent the entire 85 dollar, 30 minute consultation explaining to me why it was so important for me to have an appraisal done. She never evaluated the artwork or even took the time to look at it! I had full intention of having the artwork appraised before walking into the office, but after her poor customer service and being rudely asked to leave, I quickly changed my mind. I unfortunately lost 85 dollars in the deal and hope you will spend your hard earned money at a reputable art appraiser. I called Coronado Appraisals today and spoke with Ninya Lee Greek. When she answered the call she introduced herself and said " how can I be of assistance"? I explained to her that I was interested in two pieces of art that she had recently given appraisals for and wanted to ask her about them. She told me that she is one of only a handful of appraisers in the United States that is qualified to estimate value on such art and that the law did not allow her to discuss it with me. She added that I was not the one who had compensated her for the report, so she had no interest in any further discussion. Her tone throughout the 3 minute conversation was venomous. She was extreamly angry and you could hear her voice fluctuate from being so flustered from my request. I have been in the art business for many years and have never spoke with an individual who was as unpleasant as she was. If I could leave zero stars, I would. My experience with Ninya Greek was excellent! I had been buying art, mostly from 1970 to 1990. I bought pieces that I loved because looking at them made me happy. In December, 2015, I went to an art gallery and discovered that many of my pieces had increased in value a great deal. That is when I decided to get them insured. My insurance company would not insure them without an appraisal. Ninya Greek has the credentials, experience and education required for the appraisal. She came to my home and photographed the pieces. Later she came back with a professional photographer so I could bring the appraisal to my insurance company. Each piece and artist was thoroughly researched and documented. Through her research, she was able to place today's value on each piece. Niyna is easy to work with, friendly and professional.
