As rated the third deadliest suicide bridge in the US you can now see why every 10 feet there is a sign posted for suicide counseling services. Despite the morose feeling you may have when driving over the initial incline it's not as scary as it looks from afar. wow i didn't know you can yelp bridges. but this is a magnificent structure. big, tall, blue, and with that unique curve. the view from the bridge is awesome; you can see all of san diego pretty much. i remember going on this bridge pretty frequently as a kid; my dad used to work on one of the aircraft carriers at nasni. i even remember when you used to have to pay toll if you didn't carpool! and yes i also heard that rumor that in case there's an attack on the bridge, some pieces of the bridge could float and be tugged aside instead of sink and block access to the navy bases. if that's true, then that's freakin ingenious! if you've ever had the chance to look underneath the bridge, there's also a pretty neat catwalk that runs along the length of it that workers use to service the bridge. is that amazing or what read more

Free, beautfiul, and awesome. On par with 17-mile drive, parts of the PCH, and actually better than the Golden Gate Bridge in my opinion. The ability to flux lane numbers in/out depending on traffic patterns is also brilliant. read more

Beautiful views of San Diego. I rarely go to Coronado, seems like a world away from the rest of San Diego. But when I am bored I always like to suggest driving over the big blue bridge. Maybe I just have a thing for bridges, I did the same with the GG bridge in San Francisco. read more

One of the scariest bridges ever, why do they not have a decent guard rail on the side and no pedestrian or bicycle lane either. This bridge is third world. Better from a distance take a picture but avoid using it if you can. read more

Quite possibly the most beautiful thing we have in San Diego. I love the free feeling you get from going across it with all of San Diego's glory beneath you. Driving over it can be a little scary but being a passenger is ideal. Just beware that the traffic leaving Coronado at 3 PM is a madhouse, pretty opposite of what you would expect... but I suppose its all North Island's fault, haha. Oh, and watch your speed going in, it rapidly drops into a 25 zone which feels like walking after keeping up with San Diego's freeways; and the speed limits along Orange continually change every few feet; perfect for police quotas of traffic violations. Just make sure not to stop on the bridge; there are the blue suicide signs for a reason. read more

My favorite bridge so far.. Although sometimes it is difficult when there's an accident or lots of traffic. I think there should be a better system of the changing lane system. It just seems like a lot of extra money. I've seen 5 lane roads that alternate according to the work schedules that have a light above the lane indicating an arrow or an x. I guess they're thinking safety so there has to be a median?? read more

Whenever I drive on the Coronado Bridge, if you're going west towards Coronado, I feel like I'm driving on the bridge to Hawaii, because that's just how beautiful the view is. The Coronado Island right in front of you, the beautiful ocean behind, Point Loma behind that and the treat of the Downtown San Diego skyline to your right, the view is worth 1 million dollars. And even when you're going towards San Diego, you get a beautiful view of the entire mid-section of the city and the mountains when going in early morning, the view is absolutely paramount. It's just the most beautiful bridge ever, and it's such a symbol to the city of San Diego. It's like our little Golden Gate, or Brooklyn Bridge, our treasure.... And so, yes this bridge gets my highest merits. read more

It's a shame it's no longer walkable. At least there are no tolls! It makes for a nice view during your drive overlooking the bay and the city. My girlfriend and I have kayaked south of it for some great pictures. The bridge is a great way to enter the island for some fun and relaxation. read more

We stayed on Coronado island on our visit so we went across the bridge a number of times. They have a moveable center lane so they move it twice a day to improve traffic flow. I really like the view of town and all the navy ships from the bridge. read more

Awesome views from the bridge, WAY over the water in the center. If you drive a lifted 4x4, the right side lanes allow you to look straight down over the sides to the ocean 1,000 feet (ha!) below. read more

As far as bridges go this one is a bit mediocre. Made of boring concrete and bland blue supports. Kind of seems like a brutalist got his way architecturally here, think Boston Government Center. There's no way for people to get across it other than by car which means the only people on foot are probably about to practice their high dive. Its cool to look around and whatnot while on the bridge but that's hardly recommended. It obviously f's up the neighbor it lands in on Coronado and the disruption it caused to Barrio Logan is the stuff of legends. Luckily the Chicanos got their park, but only because they took their park. Not sure if i like the Aztlan propaganda on the posts,but hey, to each is own. If you want to see a really cool bridge try Mackinac Bridge connecting the UP of Michigan to the hand shaped part of Mich. or the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. read more

Based on other people's personal accounts of their experiences with this bridge, I was probably expecting a lot more dramatics. The drive over was pretty low key in my opinion. I thought that the view of the bridge from both Coronado and Seaport Village was cooler than the actual drive over. The bridge itself does make for a pretty impressive backdrop for photos. read more

view from the bridge is spectacular! last week, got to enjoy the view fer 20 min as I sat, providin cover, fer a 2 vehicle TC right near the top, EB, in the #1 lane [ of 2 at that time ] fella wern't payin attention and ran inta the rear of an SUV & got his nose stuck under ;) no one hurt, luckily, but vehicles requirin 1185's [ tows ] I'm all the time tellin folks that the freeway's not a dog park and if they follow too close they're agonna git brown on their nose ;) first CHP unit took 20 min to arrive cause there was a traffic mess on the WB I-8 near the 5 at the time w multiple TCs they were busy with -- THEN -- there was the traffic, backed all the way up inta Coronado, that they, & the tows, hadta git thru as well. fun times ;) sooo -- I got to sit there & enjoy the view :) leave ROOM when ya drive folks! been doin rescues & tendin incidents on the bridge since it was built in 69 -- lotsa stories -- some funny -- some interestin -- some not so funny :( [ won't mention the not so funny ones here ] one night, late, I pulled up behind an older Dodge station wagon stopped by the rail [ he was standin behind the car lookin over the rail ]and inquired of the driver his trouble. He said he was outta gas. I said "well, no worries, I've GOT some for you." He said he didn't have the key to the lockin cap -- well, I'm some worried, cause we jist had a near miss from a driver who wern't payin attention, so, I'm a leetil excited and I twist off the cap w my bare hands! Put in some gas. tell him to try startin it rhoommm -- starts right up! he waves and drives away. well now, as i'm drivin away, I ponder the fact that the Dodge started instantly -- that year model, when it's run otta gas, takes a while fer the fuel pump to git it upta the carb -- likely he were'nt outta gas ;) anyways -- nother bridge story w a happy endin -- ON the Coronado bridge today Went out "searchin" tday -- took Shela to the dog park @ OB -- "She's" some happy -- been askin ta go went over the bridge several times in the course of the day's run -- LAST time over WB I noticed in the EB lanes a tire "carcass" that hadn't been there previously -- turned around @ the plaza and started back EB -- passed the carcass as it was gittin hit and causin vehicles ta swerve to avoid it keepin an eye peeled fer the vehicle that lost it as it couldn't have gotten too far -- THERE IT IS --- on the bridge "collector" ramp to NB I-5 -- on the curve -- right in the middle of the #2 lane ---a little old lady standin behind her MB sedan w the RR tire blown and shredded and the rim diggin into the road surface -- prob she hadn't been hit yet cause she WAS standin behind it and that made it noticeable enough fer drivers TO notice since the sun was makin the MB's hazard flashers hard ta see. Well -- I "LIT UP" w everythin I have rear facin!! jumped out and began to rapidly change out the tire after advisin the lady to git inta the car where she'd be safer -- SEVERAL near TCs as drivers either ignore or can't see my warning displays ONE comes slidin to a stop jist feet away and our eyes lock and he mouths "sorry" whirlwinding the change -- I look up fer a second, and see a CHP "lit up" and MOVIN through the traffic @ the crest of the bridge -- he covers the lane behind us w his cruiser sideways and comes up jist as I throw the shredded remains inta the trunk and yell fer the woman ta GO! GO! GO! no time fer nicities anyways -- HE said thanks fer helpin her, then we both "got the HELL outta Dodge" several other "ordinary" incidents as well -- but THAT one -- well THAT'S the kind thing that keeps me "out there" searchin. Well it ain't the Golden Gate but... It was quite exciting to be in such a long bridge spanning such a distance connecting San Diego to Coronado Island. The island is lovely and chill, the perfect beach to pass the day at while.marveling at the looming "Del". Definitely worth a trip over. read more

Great view of Coronado and the Imperial Beach area from the top. If you don't have a car then take the 901 bus to enjoy the view.

I never tire going over this bridge. The views are beautiful and it's a unique bridge. You can always tell that it's our bridge whenever they show it on movies or tv shows. I've driven over it, been underneath it on a cruise and walked over it during one of those bridge walk/runs. It's beautiful! read more

Better from a Distance It's a bridge. It will take you from one side to the other. It's a nice bridge. The views from it are okay, but you can't really enjoy them without risking an accident. It's a nice - albeit boring - bridge. My advice: enjoy the views of the bridge as part of the entire view of downtown San Diego. That is when this bridge is at its best. read more

If you drive on this bridge AT NIGHT and check out the view it is one of the most beautiful things you will ever see!! It truly amazes me every time. The view during the day is nothing like it is at night. Shocking and sad, but........233 people have commit suicide jumping off this bridge since the mid 1970's. There is several suicide hotline signes posted on the bridge. read more

This bridge is pretty exciting to wheelie a motorcycle across. The road itself is rather bumpy and there's a big crown to it, so you really gotta be on the ball. If not, you'll be taking quite the high dive. Oh yea, the view is cool too. It's a pretty damn high bridge. read more

Crossing the Coronado Bridge is a truly unique experience. I'm not sure which way is cooler, going to Coronado or coming into downtown. Growing up in the Midwest, we just had boring bridges over muddy rivers. Crossing the Coronado Bridge is a great reminder that one is in beautiful southern California. read more
