To my credit, I practice great hygiene, to my detriment, the genetic composition of my teeth leaves much to be desired. From this vast pool of experience in dental treatment, I have never felt obligated to leave a review. However, my recent appointment with Dr. Smart has motivated me, for the first time, to share my experience. Getting a filling (and in my case, 3 fillings) always seems to require cold back sweat, sticky leather chairs and the smell of the filling-resin drying under a harsh purple curing light. I cannot leave out the Novocain shot of course. Nothing prompts the breakout of a cold sweat like the anticipation of a novocain shot. This experience as a whole conspires to leave dentists feeling helpless in reversing the hint of dread afflicting most every patient facing an upcoming filling appointment. Alleviating the pain and anxiety of having your teeth drilled into will ultimately require new drugs and techniques that technology may well eventually solve. However, I do not see a relaxed filling coming anytime soon. In the meantime, I recommend Dr. Smart! He did not physically hold my hand during the procedure, but he is a great communicator and spent much of the time explaining to me the particulars of the procedure. Why was this immensely helpful? Well, rather than kidding myself that the images of Hawaii's Big Island could distract me from drilling, I found that actively thinking about the procedure was extremely helpful. By listening to Dr. Smart's description of the events unfolding I viewed the experience from the role of the dentist rather than that of the patient. In so doing, I found little reason to complain about receiving three fillings. At the end of the appointment, I was still numb obviously, but I was happy because the price tag was affordable, the service careful and attentive and I found that Dr. Smart truly cares about your experience. I cannot say this about every dentist.

He and his staff were quick to diagnose the correct solution and I am now waiting for my new crown. The atmosphere in the office is always very light and jovial and courteous. Great service! Dr. Howerton was very patient, calming and gentle with her. Not only did he have a translator on staff to help but he also had the medical papers translated for her. I was so impressed by his thoughtfulness and kindness toward his ESL patients. I also found out that he volunteers his time to serve people in our community that may not be able to afford medical care. Dr. Howerton is an exceptional oral surgeon but also an outstanding human being. In addition to all of that, his lobby has to massage your back to chairs, chilled water bottles and a cure egg for his patients. He goes above and beyond in all aspects of his practice and it was very much appreciated

The doc was sweet and caring about how I was doing. Only bummer side to this place is they don't start till 8am, it would be great if they had a day or two in the week they start at 7am for normal teeth cleaning type appts. Do not trust this dentist office!! Super long review but worth the read…read more Well sad end to many years at this place. They have always been really nice to work with till they changed how they take my insurance. I had a appointment for a onlay/crown and filling. It was just after the first of the year and I knew my insurance would be covering more of the cost as that's how the plan we have works. When I walked in that morning to get my work done I went and made sure I was paying all my potions up front to avoid any back dated billing. Because I have seen this done with other dentist offices in the past. They told me they changed things and my cost was going to be much more now. I said why did you not tell before hand. They said we tried to contact all customers but clearly they did not. The lady was nice and said let's see what we can do and she lowers the bill from like $443.00 down to $139.00, ok well I figure I like them and a $139.00 is worth going to a place you like. So I paid up front for the services of that day and got the work done. Well low and behold a few weeks later here comes a bill for $304.00. I call them and try and talk to them about how I did everything in my power to avoid this and had a detailed conversation with the lady who took my payment. They still stand by the fact I need to pay while admitting they are the ones that changed the insurance plans, but still want me to pay for something they chose to do. Pretty shady way to treat customers that try and make sure all bills are paid up front. And call me crazy but it sure looks like they moved the remainder over from the original bill when I walked in that day. And did not adjustment to cost. You know simple math. And I told them that day it was the wrong amount I would owe.. so in the end the office lady in billing was totally ok with me not returning to them again as a customer. So apparently they don't care about keeping customers. So please think about that before doing business with people like this. Customer service when it matters is important not just being chipper when you walk in.
