I heard how fun BJJ is from a number of friends and finally decided to give it a shot not really knowing anything about it. I've been at Cosmic training center for about 5 weeks now and it has been great. Professor Joseph and the other coaches makes the environment super approachable and mellow even for a complete newbie. I've been coming here for over a year now. Everyone here is friendly, from the instructors to the students. Coach Joseph is awesome at what he does and he spends a great amount of time going over moves in detail while observing us during drilling. Each class gives opportunity to those that roll and during each roll, I pick up tips from the higher belts. There is no shortage of high level guys willing to help the new people like me. Even though I'm in medical school, I try to come as often as I can for stress relief and exercise. There's a great amount of attention to students and I'm pretty sure each instructor keeps an eye on each student's progress. The classes are smaller than other gyms so if you are new, you get a really nice introduction to the sport. I know when I started how intimidated I was but it was definitely easy and friendly with the help of the guys at Cosmic. The students are a diverse too - a mix of genders and people of all sizes. Hygiene is a big factor for me and Cosmic doesn't disappoint. The place is clean and doesn't have the funky smell that a lot of other gyms have. Students maintain their gi cleanliness and observe good hygiene practices. They also keep the mats clean - super important to reduce staph infections. The kid classes are pretty dope too. If you're a parent you should check it out to see if it's a thing your kid might like. If you're on the fence about trying something new or to find a sport that keeps you in shape, consider this place on the top of your list. I've been training BJJ at Cosmic Training Center for over two years. Prior to that, my primary mode of exercise was weight lifting and running. Thinking that I've been working out for nearly half my life, ran multiple mud runs and marathons, the physical demands of jiu jitsu should be no big deal. Boy, was I wrong. I started coming here late January because of all the good reviews on Yelp and their great 5 weeks for $11 trial deal. What a steal! I've an active person who lifts weights and plays a bunch of sports for fun, but something I always wanted to learn was a martial art. There are so many to choose from, but I really liked the problem solving and full contact sparring aspect of BJJ which is what made me give it a try. I was immediately hooked after my first class. The teachers are all friendly, comprehensive, and patient with all of us beginner students. This makes the environment great for learning. All of the students are extremely nice and there's a sense of camaraderie among them, but they are still welcoming to new students. They work in a variety of health, tech, service, etc fields so you'll probably run into someone who works on something you know about and look, connection! The owner is black belt Joseph Lee and he's extremely laid back and approachable. He teaches classes, rolls with the students, and encourages tournament participation for his students, win or lose it doesn't matter. He also organizes events for the whole club and trips to other countries to compete if you are free and willing to go with him. I've been going to Cosmic Training Center(CTC) to learn and practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(BJJ) for 7 months now. When I first started, I had no experience with Martial Arts - let alone BJJ. Coach Joseph introduced me to a trial period where I could have a first hand experience on how the classes were like. I was hooked after the first trial class. The instructors are all nice, friendly, patient, helpful, and supportive. The instructors always make sure that you are performing techniques correctly, allowing students to practice techniques in a proper and smoother fashion. Even though the price is a little bit more expensive than other schools, it is all worth it!!! With the instructors and Coach Joseph's assistance and encouragement, I have finally found that missing adrenaline and passion that I have been searching for! This is the best place to come to if you want to try out BJJ. I've never had any experience in any type of mixed martial arts but I've gotten into watching UFC and it's been really interesting so I decided to give this a go. My good friend was taking some classes and suggested that I come try it out for fun. I came down two week nights in a row and Joseph was really knowledgeable and accommodating.The warm up looks easy but it'll get your blood pumping. Fun and a great work out! Joseph is very through in explaining what was going to be taught in the lesson and if you had any questions or concerns he was more than happy to explain and show you step by step. Trying it out was free and there was never an ounce of pressure to sign up or anything. Joseph actually encouraged me to come and try it out some more at no cost. Super friendly and warm environment. Everyone is there to help you and no one is judging you at all if there is something you're having trouble with. If anyone is being overly aggressive, you will be asked to tone it down a notch. This isn't about being competitive with each other or showing each other up, it's a great learning environment. I wore some leggings and a sweatshirt my second time there and apparently when we were warming up, my leggings became see-through in some drills. Joseph was kind enough to stand behind me till the end of the mat to let me know. He also took off his very own gi that he was wearing and lent it to me! AND he helped me put it on because I had no idea what I was doing. Super sweet. I really appreciated that! If I lived closer I would definitely come here regularly. Today was my second time stopping Cosmic Training Center and it was packed! The instructor Joseph was a upper belt at a Bjj school I trained at in the past so when I heard he was opening up a school I decided to come check it out. Joseph comes from a strong lineage of Jiujitsu professors and it shows in his techniques but he also seems has that innate ability to teach. One of the best thing about Cosmic is the lack of a hard sales pitch or orchestrated marketing strategy. I think the other yelpers reviewing Cosmic can also attest to this. Wow!!!!!!!!! I have been training BJJ on and off for 7 yrs ... and I thought I was in pretty good shape ... until professor Joseph put me in my place and that's just the warm-up. I dropped by Cosmic last week with my daughter to visit Joseph's new training facility and wasn't thinking about training at all. But once there and seeing all the students working on their moves ... I got the BJJ itch. Luckily Joseph had a spare pair of shorts and t-shirt to loan me so I was able to join the class. I have to admit ... the warm-up was awesome, Joseph designed a dynamic warm-up regiment that consist of jumping, running, rolling, crawling ... all of which helps engage your hips, legs and core muscles. I worked up a really good sweat and was was a bit out of breath afterward ... guess, I wasn't in as good a shape as I thought I was. Then comes the class, the lesson for the evening was guillotine choke from standing and on the ground. Plus how to escape from the north and south position. Even though I had taken these classes before in my 7 yrs of training, it never seems to amaze me that every time I take one of these classes ... I always learn something new and it's always just a little tweak or placement of the hand or wrist and it's 100 percent better. Joseph did not disappoint in this area ... his instructions were very detailed and easy to understand. If you didn't get it the first, second or third time, he would patiently show it to you again and again. His teaching philosophy is NEVER GIVE UP!!! Always try and always experience but mind your fellow students as not to over do it and hurt anyone. Which is why his warm-up are so tough ... because in competition or in a street fight, no one is going to stand around and wait for you to catch your breath. As for kids taking BJJ, it's a great place for them to start ... as Joseph has a way of encouraging, building confident and discipline in even the most timid young person. Of course, his youthful and friendly personality does help ... having said that, he can also be the tough and disciplinary coach, if he catches you messing around in class. In summary, I highly recommend Cosmic Training Center whether you're 10 to 110 ... it's fun, offer a good workout as well as an art that you can actually use to defend yourself ... plus there's a sense of comradery among the students. It's worth checking out ... come train with an open mind. In truth, Joseph is a friend that I have the privileged to know and trained with for 5 years from Shawn Williams' academy. My last Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school offered top notch instruction, therefore I was not going to settle for anything less. I left because I no longer had time for the distant commute (I live in East L.A. and my last school was in Burbank and in rush hour, traffic really sucks). I am a white belt with 1.5 years of experience and attended a class at Cosmic recently. From the get-go, Coach Joseph was extremely welcoming. If you want the right combination of detail, and conceptual descriptions that will improve your jiu jitsu game, this is the place to go. We covered guard passing, head locking, and submissions via guillotine chokes. Not only did Coach Joseph give me extremely helpful feedback on specific details related to finishing the choke and positioning during guard passing, he clearly described how all of the aforementioned concepts tie together. The class itself was also very interactive--I felt like I was getting very personalized one-on-one instruction, with great advice from my training partners, instead of being part of a large class lecture. I've been going to cosmic training center since November of 2013. For a while I was looking for a martial arts school to attend so that I could really get into shape, and learn an art that could help defend my daughter and myself if the situation were to ever present itself. I was skeptical about a lot of the schools around my area. I was looking for a place that not only I can go to learn something new, but to a place where you could bond with the other students. A sort of "family" per say. When I first met Joseph, he was very friendly, not intimidating at all. There was no pressure in feeling like I had to join right away and pay money I wasn't sure that I could pay. Joseph also made it very clear about the pricing, which you really can't beat. No hidden fees of any kind, just a straight forward price. The classes are awesome. Joseph really does take the time to make sure that you are really learning your technique. Although, you still need to put in a considerable amount of work, just like anything else if you really want to get it down. I also take the crossfire class with victor poch! He is just as awesome as Joseph! He doesn't push you so much that you feel you're going to hurt yourself, but he does make sure you get in a really good work out. It was a pretty small class when I started, but it's definitely grown considerably since then. I have been coming here for just a little over 3mo and have been more than happy with the progress that I have made since I started. I am a big guy and not fit at all when I first started and Joe was more than patient in helping me with getting acclimated to the routine that has helped me lose 10lb and going. And as it's always true that like minded individuals will attract each other, the others in the class have been more than supportive in my journey thus far. Joe teaches many variations of the techniques so that everyone big and small can have many tools to improve their game. He also teaches the philosophy that everyone will be able to do all the techniques that he teaches as long as one stays consistent. And consistency definitely paid off for me and others who are regulars that I have observed in class. He is also very attentive during the live rolls and coaches during the rolls whenever he gets a chance to really push you to grow yet is mindful of the things that may cause injuries. Women's Self-Defense - I have been taking this class for 4+ months, with the initial intention of taking it for 1 month just to "try it out." Generally speaking, I am not athletic and prefer sitting on the couch watching Netflix rather than any form of exercise. I am glad I got off the couch. This class is 5 STARS and a must for all women (including teens). The curriculum is thoughtful and practical, and runs you through many potential situations a woman might hopefully never find themselves in. We discuss (and practice) prevention, awareness and responsive action. The environment is inviting, warm and not intimidating at all. I recently visited my parents in town and found this studio near-by my parents'. Since I am very new to BJJ (2months in), I wanted to continue training while I was traveling, so I contacted Joseph, and he immediately invited me in to train with them. Joseph was very friendly, patient, and most importantly, knowledgeable about BJJ. Not only he pays attention to small details but he also emphasizes safety. I am no expert, but you can see Joseph's passion for BJJ, and the way he arranges the classes to be fun and enjoyable. I've trained with Professor Joseph Lee for a few years now at Cosmic. What I enjoy the most is the culture of inclusivity, and his entertaining and light-hearted approach to teaching a variety of styles. I've not met too many instructors open to new ideas and concepts the way he is, always willing to learn and relearn even as a seasoned black belt. To this point, Cosmic regularly has top level black belts conduct seminars at little to no cost to students! Cosmic recently relocated just before the pandemic to a beautiful and spacious location which spared no costs on its top-of-the-line mats. The facility is clean, with changing rooms, and bathrooms, and ample seating for spectators. Sundays provide a real treat as Cosmic hosts its world famous open mat which attracts many grapplers of every level, age, and walk of life. My son has been training at Cosmic for close to a year now, and he still loves going. When we first started, my son was only 5years old, and we weren't sure if he was ready, but he was really interested. Coach Joe was friendly over the phone and generously offered to let him come and try things out, no commitment, no pressure. Right away, the kids' teachers were super nice, making him feel included even while he was learning the basic moves. The kids were great too- super friendly, fun, and not aggressive. Everyone was happy to show him the moves and encourage him as he learned. As time has passed, I have seen this same attitude every time there is a new kid introduced to the class. Having watched many of his practices, I'm impressed by how well they've tailored their program to kids. Classes are twice a week, and each class has a well-balanced combination of cardio/agility exercises as well as technical jiu jitsu training. They keep things fresh by changing up the games, so my son's excited to go back for every class. The kids have a lot of fun and definitely use up all their spare energy, but they're also taught when to sit and listen, respect for their teachers, and respect for each other. As a woman, I'm also really happy that both the kids and adult classes include both genders. I want my son growing up knowing that girls are tough too, and to respect girls that are able to challenge him. I think it's awesome that in our last competition the winner of his age division was a girl :) To be honest, his love for the class is what has kept us going, because there are definitely times as a busy mom, where I'm like- you know, I could use a little more free time in our schedule, why don't we take a break. This summer, my son was at a summer school program when he met another kid who kept trying to take his stuff, take over his work space, and finally this boy became more aggressive and shoved my son. My son is usually pretty avoidant of physical confrontation, but he told me when the kid pushed him, "I used my jiu jitsu moves so I wouldn't fall and get hurt, I dodged and I got back up, so don't worry, I'm ok." Hearing my son tell me how training at Cosmic has given him both the physical skills and the self-confidence to deal with that kind of situation makes any of the trouble on my end feel totally worth it. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu :) I have always been oddly (and stereotypically) drawn to martial arts and made it a goal this year to get my feet through the door. I trusted Yelpers and dropped by Cosmic and started with their two week free trial. Everyone was tremendously helpful and nice, making sure I felt comfortable in terms of being only one of a handful of girls there (when I started; more girls have joined since then). If you do have trouble being in close quarters with boys, I suggest not engaging in this contact sport. The teachers guide you through the drills, techniques, defenses, and moves and I grew to love how it made me better understand what my body can do and what it was weak to. The higher-ups gave me tips whenever I rolled with them and everyone taught me something in terms of method, tips, tricks, or style. I'll always be grateful for when I made the decision to walk through those doors onto the mats this past February. read more

If I tried describing Cosmic Training Center in just a few words, I would not be able to. There are so many great things about this place and I would be raving for hours about the quality, intense training and positive atmosphere anyone can feel right before you are about to step inside. I had explored various gyms, ranging from 24 Hour Fitness to Martial Arts to my local YMCA. Did not like any of them! I did not want to train with people who were snooty, pretentious, talked sh** and had something to prove. Cosmic Training Center... a complete 180. I saw a flyer at East Los Angeles College and right away, the flyer itself caught my attention. I went to the dojo and met Joseph, the instructor, and could tell on the spot he was humble, courteous, knowledgable and friendly. I had absolutley no training in any form of martial arts and was hesitant to return since I knew nobody and am not the type of person who dives into the ocean and swims. Yet I did and have been coming here religiously. This place is like music; when the beat kicks in, everything falls into place. Joseph makes sure every student is humble, respectful and challenges themselves to become not only a better fighter, but a better person. He goes over technique very detailed, with variations and will show a move again if one wishes. I can honestly say I've come a long way compared to how I was when I started. I was hesitant to roll, try a move, hell even to do a forward roll and didn't even know how to tie my belt. Thanks to not only Joseph but every single person at the academy, I got better. I was never pressured into signing a contract and this place does not need to do that because everything about it sells itself. This place is clean with people who are frank yet not rude. Joseph is nice and friendly but can be tough and firm if a situation occurs or if a person gets out of line. You'll get to know people and will learn from each other. Confidence, tranquility, strength and happiness is what someone can gain from this place, the same way I did. You can really feel a sense of community here. No bullies or ego's here. Stripes and belts are not handed out like Red Bulls on a college campus here, one earns it. If you desperately want a black belt, go to Macy's and buy one. Cosmic is such a great gym! A lot of times for women it's hard to find a place to train martial art, especially one that can be as physical as Muy Thai and Brazilian jiu jitsu. However, the staff at cosmic makes you feel so comfortable and included that it's so easy to go there and train regularly. I would definitely suggest this gym to everyone! Coach Joseph is the lead instructor and can really push you to try and become the best competitor. He and the other students work hard to push one another within the competition class. However within regular beginner classes you get to try out the sport for the first time and train your body to slowly become more fit. I've been coming here for over a year and still love it! I have been doing BJJ for the last three years and wanted to get some practice in while vacationing in SoCal. While in LA I decided to drop-in at Cosmic on the recommendation of my BJJ coach. First off, Joseph was super gracious and opened the gym at 10 am even though he did not have to. I got an opportunity to roll with Joseph and his students and also was fortunate to pick his brains on improvements to make my game. First off, Coach Joseph is LEGIT. How do I know? Look at his competition track record, his lineage, and how much DAMN time he has put in BJJ! Or you could just watch him teach a class to understand this man knows his jiu-jitsu! Additionally I was impressed with how friendly, professional, and egoless he was. His students also reflect these aspects as well! Finally, I was super impressed on the details that Coach Joseph gave to me to improve my guard passing game. Not only did he gave super-detailed and technical instructions, but did so in a manner where not only was he trying to correct/teach a move but also HIGHLIGHT and illustrate the underlying principles behind the move. I am so glad that I went way out of my comfort zone to try out muay thai and Brazilian jiu jitsu with Cosmic. I have never done any form of martial arts, but all the instructors have been more than willing to step to the side to give me better direction and encourage me. Each class is a new set of techniques with some application or renewal of previous techniques. Instructors basically tailor according to who attends class that day. Many of these other reviewers go into how great their training experiences have been, but since I am so new and have obviously been loving each class, I will say that everyone, both the students and the instructors, has been so welcoming and so friendly. Everyone really does get along well with one another. When I work with a partner, my partners are always eager to share tips and advice when I need it. If we aren't sure how the combination we just saw went, we ask and practice an extra couple rounds. I love everyone's enthusiasm and the sense of community. I decided I wanted to learn some kind of martial arts, because I realized just how vulnerable I would be if I was forced to engage in any type of confrontation. You get little chance to prepare your instincts in case of a threat. On top of this, I wanted something that kept me moving since I sit at a computer all day, and in class we have to use the entire body. After this one class of bjj, I remember not being able to pick up my feet because my thighs were so sore. If you're on the fence about trying it out and you're a little concerned about the commitment, you should definitely drop in for a class and ask about what they can offer. They give you a chance to do a trial period before diving in - which I took full advantage of because it felt so good using all that energy. They are also very understanding and know that not everyone can commit, and honestly that really took away the pressure... and then I promptly signed up. read more

Coach Joseph Lee runs an excellent academy that caters to both beginners and seasoned Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Practitioners. Bonus: he has the best playlist of songs playing during training. An organization's culture stems from the top and in the case of Cosmic Training Center, you can definitely see that reflected all through out this gym. It is rare to find a group of people so easy going, yet disciplined as Joseph, his instructors and his students. Everyone is friendly, easy to talk to and approachable, but focused when it comes time to drill and train. Joseph is always available to answer my questions, no matter how simple or difficult the techniques might be. While the focus on basic techniques and curriculum are there, the real gem is when Joseph goes the extra mile to break down the latest pro matches and shows his students what went wrong and what went right. Cosmic is not my main gym but I frequent their open mat on Sundays. I have never taken a class at Cosmic so my review is solely limited to the open mat. Going to another gym for an open mat can be intimidating, however, the environment at Cosmic is very friendly and the instructors are truly passionate about bjj. I am very surprised by the headcount for the open mat. Not only that, a lot of people that attend are not from Cosmic but from other local gyms as well as international. International visitors come more frequently during big tournaments such as Worlds or Pan Ams. Having so much diversity in gyms during their open mat gave me a lot of exposure to different techniques and game styles. Additionally Cosmic has a lot of seminars which is open to non-gym members for a really reasonable fee. Lastly, Cosmic also serves the community by hosting open mats during the holidays with donations of food on November and toy drives during December. Cosmic training center in Alhambra is a great place to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu! Joseph is an excellent instructor who is very respectful, friendly, but most of all knowledgable! He is patient, detailed, and clear in his explanation of techniques. BJJ teaches you that there is a solution to every problem, even if that means tapping out. It keeps your brain quick, agile, and young. This sport is so much fun that eventually becomes a lifestyle. One of my favorite things about Cosmic Training Center is how it is ego free! This place is amazing. My daughter goes here 4 days a week and she loves it. The coaches are very nice and there are also self defense classes as well with only females. The self defense class is a great way to learn to defend yourself if you're on the street. Coach Joseph is very good at explaining and will easily notice if you're doing a mistake and will fix it so you could improve next time you do the move. The people in the studio are also very nice and it's all levels. If you want to learn jiu jitsu and you're around here I recommend coming to this place! read more

A friend of mine introduced me to this place a while ago. Like most people, I was skeptical at first because the owner was just a brown belt, but I thought I would try out jiu jitsu for a year or so, so why not. Plus I had a friend that was training at the gym which made me feel more comfortable. I wanted to get in shape, but I HATED lifting weights. Its been 2 years now and I am in the best shape I have ever been in (I used to be skinny fat). Some days I drive home after a hard training session, physically spent, but still able to feel a "roller's" high. Even though Joseph is only a brown belt his teaching is phenomenal. He is capable of making you be better than you would expect. The people here are genuine and funny. This place truly has a positive vibe and makes you feel welcomed. No one judges you for being a white belt, because we all knew what it felt like to be a white belt. Joseph is very upfront and firm with the prices because this academy is cheaper compared to most academys. Its nice to be in shape, but If it weren't for the people that I have met here, I would not have continued.The relationships I have made here are the only reasons why I keep coming. Even if I have a bad day before the academy, I know that I will leave the academy with a smile on my face. Getting in shape is hard, but its a lot harder when its a place you hate going to. read more

I've only been at this gym for a month or so but I can definitely say it was a good experience. All the instructors were knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful which made me feel comfortable. Every week we learn new submissions, and practice previous techniques. The classes can be tailored to your ability. Classes ranges from learning techniques step by step, or if your up to challenge, roll with the heavy weights. Jiu jitzu is a great workout. Im always covered in sweat after. Awesome training experience. Definitely recommend checking out a class. There's no pressure to sign up, and you'll get a solid grasp of the culture. As someone new to the sport, coaching has been very engaging and accessible. Training partners have been very supportive at all ranks. This is a great gym. I love the training environment and level of instruction. The gym is clean, ego-free, and they even some weight training equipment in the back. The class schedule is flexible. They're open almost everyday. The biggest reason that I like coming here is the BJJ Instructor Joseph Lee. He goes over takedowns, Gi, and NoGi. He listens well to his students and pushes them well. You'll learn a lot of over here and will get a lot of reps in on going over the moves in class. Also, there's plenty of sparring/rolling. I highly recommend this place.
