This KungFu Center is where my nephew and niece are taking lessons for many years now. We got an opportunity to watch them perform some sparring moves this past weekend... it was neat. Center is not a large space, but it works for the number of students that they have enrolled. One down side... there is not a lot of seating for parents or anyone who want to stay and watch their kids train. Space is very limited. I am not familiar with the cost of enrollmemt. I do know sometimes they have their students perform in special events throughout the year. I've been to one of those before... wonderful to see the kids performance after intense training and practice. If you're a parent or anyone who is interested in sending your child to learn some kung fu, this may be the place for you. Our 7 year old son and 5 year old daughter have been with US Kungfu Center for the last 5 months. We initially wanted the kids to learn Kungfu to give the kids an opportunity to get stronger and to learn self defense. I particularly wanted my son to grow as he was always the shy and timid kid. He started off so scared that he wouldn't even attempt a trial class until coming for the 5th time. Shifu was very patient to us and kept letting us watch until he was ready. After finally taking one trial class, my son and daughter wanted to continue and have since enrolled in their Blackbelt training course. My son has since gained more confidence in himself, and he has routinely been given opportunities by Shifu to lead and demonstrate to the class. In the 5 months of class so far, our kids have gained strength, flexibility, and coordination. The lessons taught are very practical, I have seen first hand with my son falling off the scooter and successfully apply the techniques Shifu taught which protected him from getting seriously hurt. I've also appreciated how the blackbelt program teaches our kids that becoming a blackbelt is not all about strength, but instead involves character development, attention to detail, and perseverance even when things are hard and difficult. To move up in belts rankings, the kids have to show character and attitude development at home by being helpful, by reading, by eating healthy, and by practicing Kungfu at home. Lastly, I think what sets this program apart from others is really the opportunity to learn from Shifu, he not only cares for the kids to become strong physically, but cares more that they become strong mentally which will undoubtedly translate to other aspects of their lives. read more

As others have mentioned, Shifu (Master) is the 34th generation original Shaolin monk who came from the Shaolin temple in China. He runs the school by himself. The studio is clean and comfortable. Shifu is very patient with kids of different age and levels. Although I wish he can be tougher and stricter, I do understand he has to adapt to the American way and also how to deal with the new generation of kids. There are a few assistants, who are students who had practiced for years and passed the black belt and instructor exam. They are friendly and experienced. Our son has been attending this studio for over a year since he was 5 years old. He had improved a lot in terms of strength, agility and confidence. He had taken and passed 3 tests and is current on his 4th belt, learning the 4th form of martial arts. They also train him on various skills through the classes. He had participated in a few performances, and getting more and more comfortable with being on stage. Since we live far away and only able to come in once a week, practicing at home is important to keep up. The people here are very warm and friendly. We have formed good friendships with Shifu, the assistants, kids and parents there. We recently started enrolling our 4 year old daughter in the classes as well and she's having a lot of fun and doing well. Although there will always be challenges to push the kids to start learning new things, as long as the parents persist and be patient, it will pay off in the future. It's really about time that we write a review for Yan Guang 延光 Shi Fu. My son is almost 7, and has been taking classes here for over half a year. It started off as I just wanted to see if he's interested in it, now it's become a regular part of his life! I don't know what clicked but he's been asking me to do it 3 times a week...My son has become quite the muscular little kungfu monk! Shifu doesn't force it when it comes to movements. Everyone progresses at their own pace. It's the cutest thing seeing the 4 year old's tumbling and tripping along. The studio really has become our 2nd home since we're here a few times a week. Love to include kung fu as part of our family, I sure want my son to grow up worshiping Chinese traditions and cultures. read more

I am not a student nor is my child. I have driven by this place in Monterey Park many times over the few years they have been open. As my son approaches age 5, we are looking at starting martial arts training. This was nearby, and I felt Kung Fu might be a less brutal way to start out than say Krav Maga or Muay Thai or even BJJ. Walked into a class with wife and son yesterday to get some info. There was a class going on with about 7 students around 11 years old. They were practicing with various traditional weapons and leaping around. There was one teacher. First, the teacher made zero effort the 10 minutes we stood there to approach us or acknowledge us or ask if we needed anything. Knowing your prices or schedules would help as their on line site has zero info. We were completely ignored. At other schools we visited, the Instructor would spot us and say high. Also, having taken Tae Kwon Do as a child and Krav Maga as an adult, what I saw in full effect was in my opinion awful. The instructor ran the class with little enthusiasm and zero discipline. The students were walking around joking with each other and giggling the whole time. If I had giggled in class as a child, WHACK! Bamboo stick to your palms. The kids' form was terrible. Doughy, sloppy bodies lazily hopping around with half hearted twirls or kicks, bad timing, and most with zero ability to deliver any force to a strike or kia. Worst of all, the instructor didn't look much better. After 10 minutes of seeing kids doing useless and awful (even for a beginner) martial arts (seriously - a 5 year old BJJ class I just checked out had kids who could murderize these 11 to 13 year olds), and being ignored (at least while switching from one student to another, come over, say hi, and ask if we have any questions. We would've just asked if you had any handouts of prices or if we should come back during the 5 year old class the next morning) by the instructor... we left. Probably for the best. read more

Last year we attached the Monterey Park Lunar New Year & we watched the US Kungfu Center performance at the show, this year my son have the honor to participate in the performance show. Shifu is a great role model for him. He is really patient. Shifu is Original Shaolin Monk from Shaolin Temple in China with a family history of Shaolin Monk for centuries in the making. He understands the student's weakness & strength. He help the kids build their confidence & self-esteem, teach them discipline & respect, mental toughness, develop their physical endurance & strength, they learn about team spirit. Sometime there are student's Shifu that help out, they are as good & is like a big brother to my son. We are comfortable here, it is like my second home. We come here twice a week. The class is small about 5-9 students during weekdays, so all the kids get the individual attention that is needed. The class is around 50 minutes. The kids get a great workout & learn Kung Fu at the same time. This place is clean & well kept. I feel that my son knows that he belongs here & he will remain here as a student for a long time. We found them through the performance of Lunar New Year Festival at Monterey Park. My kids and I were immediately impressed by their enthusiasm and awesome performance. We live in West LA, it took me awhile to commit the 18 miles (with traffic, 45 min/way) drive every Saturday. So, we decided to check out the place and get more details few weeks ago. We arrived around noon on the Saturday, the door is locked. I called and was told to come back at 2pm. We ran late and came back around 3pm. Shi fu was conducting a class with students aged around 12+-. We stood there awhile watching the class. Shi fu came to us while the students are busy doing the warm up routine. He provided all the info I need and quickly got back conducting the class again. He let us stay to watch the class upon my request because my son always need some "preview" before starting anything new. We went again on the following Saturday, my son refused to get in the class but insisted to stay at the back to observe the class again. Shi fu did invite him a few times in between. Another Shi fu saw him imitated a posture and told me to bring him back "watching" the class again. We're back for the third times, and he still hesitated 15 minutes before his first class. For some reason, he changed his mind last minute and finally was willing to give it a try. However, he insisted to have me stayed next to him during the class. After 15 minutes of warm up, he followed the routine without me after getting comfortable with shi fu. On his first water break, I thought he'd dragged me into the class again. But, nope. He took a sip of water, turned and walked right back to the class without thinking twice. Most surprisingly, he wanted to sign up the class right away! Shi fu is very patient with young kids. He's paying close attention to the students, slightly push their limit (but not overly) and being strict on their discipline and postures, yet, concerning about their conditions and added a little fun to younger kids. He speaks mostly English in the class and swtiches to Mandarin to certain kids. Everyone goes with his/her own pace and each gets full attention in turns. read more

US Kungfu Center is a hidden gem run by a very caring and attentive Shifu. I've been taking lessons on/off from Shifu for months, because every time I decide to take a small break, I end up changing my mind and renewing classes with him. He's just such a awesome teacher! And every time I've gone to one of his classes, I can tell how much effort and attention he puts into every individual student, and he understands how to motivate them to push themselves to do the best they can. Shifu has a way with any students whether they are a small child or a grown adult, he know how to lead the class to train while not leaving out any newcomers or shy participants. I noticed that he sometimes gives his youngest and most confidant students the chance to demonstrate their leadership skills by leading the class in the beginning with stretches. In doing so, I can understand why his students all respect him deeply and want to do their best. Because of this, I signed up my awkward teenage brother to learn a thing or two about character building and improving his health. I was worried at first because my brother tends to shut down and become unwilling to participate during any difficult or unfamiliar situations, but after one trial lesson with Shifu, he was willing to sign up with me and learn more. I highly recommend others to try out the kickboxing class. The pace of the class pushes you enough to break a good sweat, and at the same time is not too overwhelming. This class is perfect for cardio lovers, newcomers, and those looking to get in shape. Shifu teaches a mixture of exercise to help build endurance, improve stamina, become more flexible (lots of good stretching involved), learn self defense, and all without having to drive to a fancy gym and pay $$$. Shifu is low-key hilarious and also his students love him and become better people the more they learn. Love this place! The two shi fu's that teach are really awesome with the kids. A combo of necessary discipline and kindness, which the kids really respond to. My son started 2.5 months ago as a complete beginner and yesterday, tested for his first belt, yellow, which he passed like a boss! He really loves going now, even though some days he doesn't feel like it. But once class is over, his entire attitude is different and he's all smiles and proud of his own accomplishments. My son has been training here for a year and a half and he've gained a lot from the training. Aside from getting stronger, he's for coordinated and argyle. He also gained from spatial awareness and more in tune with his body and movements. The teachers are great! They trained the kids with a balance of fun loving humor and seriousness and discipline.
