It was also a nice walk down memory lane to visit. Kmart was part of my youth growing up, having a store within walking distance during my pre-driving days. Unfortunately, they were on a slow than faster decline, culminating in their closing their last mainland US store in 2024. But here in Australia, they continue to be a large presence, with 214 total stores, 52 in New South Wales. I was curious about the history of Kmart in Australia: -- first one opened in 1969, as a joint venture between Kmart US and Coles Meyer Australia, with Kmart US owning 51% -- in 1978, Kmart US traded its share in Kmart-Australia for a 20% share of Coles. -- in 1994, Kmart US solds all of its shares, making a Kmart-Australia a completely separate entity. I did buy something here: been looking for Pokemon trading cards for my daughter, and found a collector set here with many expander decks for retail price. Pokemon cards seem to be popular again, and haven't been able to find any without significant markup. Checkout was self, but I needed a lot of help since the item was security secured. They also scan your receipt for any purchased items as you leave the store. Wouldn't say the workers would add to the stereotype of Aussies being so friendly. Didn't see any 'blue light specials' when I was there. Later learned that they had them very early in their existence in Australia, but they went away once it broke away from the US mothership.

It's the normal DJ's with department store layout catering for most things you could desire. Neat and tidy. The food section is one of my favourites. I have been there about half a dozen times now and I'm giving up on it. There are huge cage trolleys everywhere blocking aisles. They are in the same place they've been in for weeks so I didn't just go in at a bad time. In some places trying to get a supermarket trolley, stroller/pram or wheelchair through is impossible. Some of the stock is filthy! I wanted to buy magazine holders and didn't bother as they were disgusting. If you're from KMart head office and are reading this please send in someone to sort it out and bring it up to the standard of your other stores.

Visiting for the Sydney marathon, with their attempt to profit off the race and offer a print shop popup to only turn away customers due to them being ineffective in servicing everyone in a timely manner, I was turned away 3 separate times due to "lines being too long" and they even had security enforcing nobody else being able to join the queue even hours before closing. Please do not falsely advertise these services to customers and then waste their time, what a let down. It would be hard for me to believe anyone actually prepared and planned the logistics of their operations for this event, major flop for Sydney lululemon. Good news is that they did set the bar low for themselves with lots of room for improvement!

Novella (I adore the name!) is the perfect one-stop-shop for pretty much every occasion. If you can't find the right book to gift (yes, I still give books as gifts - is that old-fashioned yet?), then you'll be sure to find a cute piece of jewellery, some lovely crockery or even some particularly gorgeous leather-goods. And of course you can buy a cards to cap things off. So much for attempting to spend less time in bookstores!
