After much deliberation, I ended up picking some Butter Fudge up just for the beautiful silver and blue tin. I can't wait to drop back in to collect more darling tins, foreign candies and souveneirs for home.

All of the standard favorites: humbugs, sherbet dips, chocolate-covered everything, fruit-shaped everything...you get the idea. But imagine my absolute surprise when I spied a shelf stocked with American candy, cereals, and snacks...including my favorite: Cheetos. Not even 48 hour prior, I was telling my husband that I would go to obscene lengths to have a bag of Cheetos, so strong was my craving for the vile snack food. Little did I know that all I needed to do was go to Oxford and visit Hardy's. Sorted! Now excuse me while I go wash the orange from my fingers...

You know that phrase: "kid in a candy store?"…read more Think: candies displayed in old glass jars, chocolates made from the U.K. (bought boxes of rose cream filled one for mom and dark chocolate covered ginger for my friend), toffee, caramels, gummies and even some American candy. You think it, they probably have it. This place has that nostalgic atmosphere and sweet aromas which make you feel so good just by being in the shop. You can't go wrong with chocolate anything and English toffee that'll stick to your teeth; these are the stuff that your friends dream of. And it's so much better than that Roman Bath magnet that's just gonna sit there and collect dust. Thank me later! ;-)

The idea for this aladdin's cave of sugary delights came from a sepia photograph the owners saw on a confectionnary newspaper. And when you walk through its doors you'll see how authentically fifties this sweet shop is. The owners of the shop obviously love what they do, and will enthusiastically talk you through all their stock and help you make your choice. I can guarantee if you go back to your office with a bag of sweets from Mr Simms - you'll be the most popular person at work.

There are often queues of children lurking around, eyes wide with pleasure at the vast shelves full of treats that await them! Such treats come at a price. I'm not sure whether I remember penny sweets as correctly being a penny when I was a child (i think some of them had migrated to two pence by then!) but it is a tad expensive. For 100g, you only have to spend 75p!! At most other sweets shops, you're looking at doubling that cost for the same amount. I was completely shocked when I saw the price tag and had to check twice! As well as the traditional sweets jars, the shop also sells gift wrapped selections of sweets that are tied together with a ribbon and bow. These cost between £6 and £9 depending on the size of the parcel and the amount of sweets included. The thoughtful aesthetics and creative design of the gift wraps are absolutely perfect to give people as a unique present. Additional to gift wraps, they sell mugs full of sweets, which also look great as birthday gifts. The staff certainly know how to keep their store looking brand spanking new too, considering it has been open since December 2011. And their ditzy humour and light hearted approach really makes the whole sweet shopping experience an enjoyable and memorable one!

As well as having hundreds of jars of traditional sweets, they have imported sweets and cereals from the States like Tootsie Rolls and Lucky Charms, and more modern sour/tangy sweets like Millions and Nerds. If you don't get on well with sugar, Mary's even sell around ten jars of sugar-free sweets. Top marks go to Mary's for being the only place I've seen to stock Barratt's licorice selection boxes, with licorice watches, sparklers and catherine wheels. They also have balls of mystical goodness with a Harry Potter/Willy Wonka vibe: Invisible gobstoppers. ('You don't see them anywhere else' quips the shop owner.) Talking of the shop owner, he's a joy to talk to and is very much from the same mould as Roald Dahl's aforementioned hero. A previous venture was a Beatles-themes sub-sandwich shop in Solihull called The Yellow Submachine, all kitted out in authentic decking with pieces of machinery adorning the walls! Though sadly the success of that shop was put paid to by Subway, you can count on Mary's to bring you sweet memories for years to come.

I know there are a lot of stalls around Birmingham that sell sweets like this but nothing compares to Sweets from Heaven because they have a larger range than most. I think the prices are reasonable and some of the sweets from previous eras, like pear drops, are cheaper than other places as well. To me food is an art form and I love how creative and artistic some of the sweets look! The staff are very friendly. The shop is quiet small and when it gets busy it can feel like there's hardly any room; especially on a Saturday afternoon with the parents treating their children. I think the products make Sweets from Heaven worth the visit and would recommend them to anybody who enjoys sweets.

There seems to have been a recent explosion in small confectionary stands, particularly in shopping centres, selling American soft drinks and sweets, but I'd encourage you to stick to the established businesses in Birmingham such as Sweets from Heaven and Cyber Candy. Sweets from Heaven have a much greater range of stock than these stalls, and because they're older and have a more permanent business model, meaning cheaper prices for you and me. Because of the location, Sweets from Heaven can feel a bit chaotic (it's got as many entrances as it does shelf space), and with any more than five or six people inside, it starts to feel very crowded, and makes for difficult browsing, but it's worth the angst.
