Very chill spot and will likely return. Water is very calm and clear out back with lots of good snorkeling. Bed was comfy. You can log in to your Netflix. Restaurant next door is good for a morning coffee or in a pinch but it's just alright. Pretty expensive. This is in a good location. Rent a car for sure. Two trips in a taxi is more than a day rental car at centerline rentals. Check out my other reviews for st Croix restaurants we visited. This was our second trip. First time was Hotel on the Cay. Probably about the same, better beach here, different snorkeling there. Colder and deeper so we saw eagle rays (10 years ago). Lots is turtles our back here... There too, sting rays, barracuda, and lots of pretty reef fish here. You can snorkel the rocks up close to the beach on the left or right, or the rocks a bit further out to the left are good too. If we could give this place a million stars we would. We stayed here on our honeymoon and started our stay in the Charter-house which has a beautiful view of the ocean right out your private patio. We stayed there for three nights and then we went to the other side of the island to stay at another hotel that literally turned out to be a horror story. Paul (one of the amazing staff here) was an absolute lifesaver and was able to arrange for us to continue staying here and really helped us out. We love this place and would recommend it to absolutely everyone. Also it's a bonus for animal lovers, expect island cats, lizards, and chickens to be your neighbors and new best friends. Anytime we come to St Croix, we will be staying here. read more

Nice little cottages. There was a very musty/mildew smell to the pillows on the king size bed. If there was housekeeping she/he didn't make the beds. All that was done was the sheet/cover pulled up. Checked in on Wednesday out on Sunday and sheets NEVER changed. I'm just not use to that... I'll stay again but be more prepared. Other than that I enjoyed my stay and would definitely stay again. I don't know if there was hurricane damage or what but one of the beds had a huge stain on it that wasn't noticed until bed was stripped. read more

This was our first visit to St.Croix and Cottages by the Sea and it was amazing. It was my 50th birthday vacation that my Amazing wife planned for me and everyone at the resort was wonderful. They know how to provide excellent service and make you feel like family. I can't say enough about Sandy, she is wonderful! Friendly staff, beautiful cottages, and close (really close!) proximity to the beach make this the perfect oasis! My family has been vacationing here for years, and I've stayed at Cottages on all 3 of my trips to the island. I actually really hate to even review this place just because I feel like I'm giving away this secret about the BEST place to stay on the island... but since the staff is simply wonderful, I feel like they deserve the kudos! So, here goes: These little cottages are amazing- they are literally ON the beach so you can wake up and just step out into the sand. Paul and the others are wonderful about helping you to book (do so in advance as it can get full if you wait too long!) and even advising you on which cottage(s) would work best for your family/group size. Each cottage is unique and charming, and offers various perks depending on which you choose (e.g. closest to the sea, newly renovated, large porch facing the ocean, etc.) On my latest trip, I stayed in Cone Shell which has just recently been renovated. It was LOVELY - with a comfy king bed and a day bed, it is perfect for a couple or a couple with a toddler. The bathroom and closet are sort of "separate", there's a big flat screen TV, and the shower is HUGE - all of which I loved. I also had a full kitchen, which was nice since food on the island is PRICEY (see below). All and all, I intend to pick this cottage in particular for future trips now. Carmen and the other cleaning staffers do a wonderful job as well (managing to remove any of that pesky sand you happen to drag in). They don't clean on Weds or Sun, but are definitely worth a nice tip as they do great work! Re the food options: There isn't a restaurant on site, but there is one RIGHT next door at the Sandcastle place. It's not open everyday though! Also, mind you, unless you want a burger ($12), the options are REALLY pricey (like $25-30ish a plate!). Very clean, relaxing, simple, and nice staff. St. Croix is probably not for the folks who like touring, but perhaps the Captain Morgan Rum tour is best. Stay on the beach, read, and rest. It's made for that alone. The drive to Christiansted is not worth the destination. Visit Fredericksted when a cruise ship is in and you'll have seen the sights. Perhaps the rainforest and scuba; if that's your thing. read more

Again this year my husband and I stayed at Cottages by the Sea for the month of January. They have done a fabulous job of preparing for their guests after Hurricane Maria. What we really enjoy is the casual, warm and family atmosphere we experience while staying there. Many of the other guests return each year at the same time, which makes our month-long stay delightful. Ruth and Paul are perfect hosts, along with their staff, who go out of their way to make everything right for their guests. My family and I decided to take a mini vacation on island. When we got to our room (calypso) it was even more beautiful than I imagined. The room was clean and everything so neatly placed; beautiful decor. Full kitchen and a gas grill on site. The beach was near the cottage just a few steps away from the porch. In mid October 2015, we intended to stay at Cottages for the week for our honeymoon, but left after two uncomfortable nights. The first night was in the vaunted Crow's Nest. Yes, there's the ubiquitous free bottle of rum, but everything in the room is minimal and the cheapest available (the flooring, the mattress, the 3 glasses, the $5 shower handle), poorly maintained and not at all comfortable. [We had accommodations like this when I was in summer camp. That was fine 40 years ago - I was 11, there were horses, and we made ashtrays for our parents.] There are no windows in the Crows Nest (just screens and crank shutters with large gaps) so the small wall A/C had no chance of keeping it comfortable. Worse yet, there was constant construction noise coming from neighboring units - saws, concrete drills, hammering... - so even if we'd been comfortable, there was no way to have a nap. Of concern to guests any time of year, we had no choice but to hear every conversation of other guests as they walked past, so knew they heard any sounds we made as well. Maybe less concern if it's not your honeymoon. We switched to a different nearby room for the second night. The bed was SLIGHTLY more comfortable, but the bathroom door was moldy and peeling. We had 2 forks. $225/night and 2 freaking forks. The construction noise was still overbearing, the small wall A/C still couldn't cool, though this room did have windows. This was all completely unacceptable for our honeymoon - or at anytime for the price. Cottages refused to credit us ANY of the full rate we'd paid, claiming they "don't make anything" on Expedia bookings (75% in reality), but fortunately Expedia refunded us the entire amount when we explained, and they confirmed, the situation. If you do try this place, maybe better to use Expedia than book directly, in case your trip is a disaster too :) As others mentioned, the staff are friendly (until you object to construction noise). Yes, it's right on the beach, but if you want a comfortable bed or a functioning kitchen or bathroom you'll be disappointed. Like I said, we left after 2 unpleasant nights and went to Villa Margarita at Christiansted. No beach right there, but Villa Margarita offered everything that Cottages didn't - comfort, privacy and superior value. We paid far less per night than at Cottages and had a very comfortable villa, wonderfully accommodating hosts, and easy access to Christiansted, which seems to have considerably more to offer. We had a gorgeous view of the sea right from our bedroom, and a quiet balcony to sit on and enjoy it. We had a small but functional and equipped kitchen, a gas grill .... on and on. Cottages obviously has its fans, and I'm obviously not one of them. Maybe it comes down to whether you're willing to pay a lot of money for rudimentary accommodations so long as it's right on a beach? I grew up in NC, so I don't think of beachfront as being a big deal - maybe travelers who aren't accustomed to such settings think of it as a bonus that overrides this property's failure to provide the accommodations its rates could so easily support. I wandered onto this Yelp page 2 months after our trip and am still annoyed enough to write this now. Cottages wouldn't have thought twice about ruining our honeymoon, but we were very fortunate to get in Villa Margarita. read more
