(I've taken non-gluten free friends here and they loved it just as much as I do) The quality of the care put into the dishes doesn't waver between the regular and gluten free dishes as is so often the case at other restaurants. This is the best gluten free Italian food in all of London -scratch that the world. When I came to work in London I flew in from Bulgaria where I had just spent the last month with hardly any gluten free options. So when I discovered that Cotto was just walking distance from my hotel I freaked out and it was so good I almost ate there everyday!!! Nailed it in every category- Owner was so friendly and waiters were extremely helpful! Food was absolutely delicious, as well as being allergy friendly! And the atmosphere was so comforting, God, I just didn't want to leave. On a 3-day trip to London, I heard about this hole in the wall, allergy friendly restaurant with gluten free pasta and other Italian food called Cotto. I have allergies to dairy and eggs, so I figured that I could find something I could have there. I looked up the location on Google Maps and took the Piccadilly Line and transferred to the Bakerloo Line to Lambeth North. (Very short walk from there, just do that instead of walking all the way from Waterloo). I accidentally came about 15 minutes before opening time that day (6pm) but, even though he was eating, the owner graciously took me to a seat and asked for my order. After telling him about my allergies, he actually decided to make me a special shrimp pasta before anybody came so there was no contamination. While other restaurants have been friendly, they haven't gone this far. I then learned that the owner actually has celiac himself! What a great way to make use of allergies- opening a restaurant with gluten free food for people like yourself! Maybe I should do that one day...... read more

A mixed bag.... Perhaps London's only true gluten-free restaurant, Cotto is conveniently located near Lambeth North tube. Gluten free bread, pizza, and pasta is available. And the food is quite good. But BEWARE, because unlike any other London restaurant, at Cotto, the BREAD IS NOT FREE. Before being given the menu, we were asked "would you like bread?". As in any restaurant, we said "yes." Then we were given the menu, ordered, and ate. When we got the bill, we noticed they'd charged us £1 per person for the bread! When questioned, the formerly nice, laughing waiter suddenly became defensive and obnoxious. He told us that the charge for bread was clearly noted in the menu, and pointed to it repeatedly, and said that every restaurant in London charged money for bread (which is laughable). When we mentioned that the bread was brought to us along with the menu, he shook his head and said "that's not true". As we were in a hurry to see a show at Southbank Centre, we didn't press the point, we said "sorry about the misunderstanding," and paid the bill, very politely. Despite this, the waiter glared at us as we walked out. Having said that, the food was quite good -- although all the tomato sauce was a bit sugary. Grilled aubergine starters, mushroom ravioli, and tomassino pizza were lovely. But our experience with the bread -- and more importantly, the waiter's sudden and continued rudeness about it -- really rubbed us the wrong way. The first rule of restaurant customer service is that "listen to the customer, because they could become a regular". We were made to feel very unwelcome. And despite the good food, we sadly won't feel comfortable coming again. read more

I love this place, family run classic Italian joint. The food is always fresh, tasty, cooked to perfection and served with a BIG smile. They also cater for Gluten intolerance which i have never seen anywhere else in London. Well located 5 minutes walk from waterloo. The food is outstanding! from the Olives mixed with preserved lemons and spicy peppers that arrive immediatley to the incredibly friendly and top notch service. I wish I could review the food, but we were unable to eat here. We made a reservation on OpenTable 20 minutes before planning to arrive, only to be told when we arrived that our reservation was cancelled. Even after we said we did not cancel the reservation and showed the man at the door it was still showing up on our opentable app as valid and upcoming we were turned away. When we asked if we could still wait for a table we were told by a very rude man at the door that they do not have any room for us that night. We ended up at Hikari sushi & noodle bar for what was an amazing dinner. I suggest if you are in the area and looking for a great meal, walk right past Cotto and head to Hikari. I ordered the gnocci gluten free which were good but the sauce tasted like canned spaghetti O's Yuck. My friends meal was so disgusting. She ordered a dish that had smoked salmon, avocado and prawns. She took a few bites and I did as well. It was covered in a thick sauce that made me wanna vomit. It tasted like thousand island dressing and it was loaded with perhaps the whole bottle. The smoked salmon didnt seem smoked at all and raw. I seriously almost vomited it was so bad. She was disgusted as well. It was by far the worst meal I had while in london. Terrible. Wonderful dinner on a Friday night in London. We had the caprese salad for appetizer, and the mozzarella was quite good. Entrees were carbonara (excellent!) and prosciutto tortellini (also very good). A bottle of the house red wine was under £15 and suited the food well. We had great conversation with another American couple seated beside us, and the owner/manager was extremely friendly. All in all a great experience, and dinner (with wine) for four came out to about £90 including tip. read more

I've had gluten-free versions of various dishes at many establishments in multiple countries and this was one of the worst. Cardboard doughy pizza, terrible. It's like they just bought the dough from the frozen gluten free section of some giant chain supermarket and slipped some cheese (and in my case, cheap mushrooms) on it. I've made better gluten free products from just slipping a generic flour mix in a bowl with some baking soda. If the prices were half what they are, it would be more understandable, but oof..to make matters worse, they clearly didn't care or say anything when they took away the barely eaten pizza off my partner. And, to add insult to injury, as others have written, the waitress will try to offer you bread several times and never mention they charge for it. It was only after I asked her multiple times, "I have heard you charge for the bread, is that correct?" That she purported to understand then walked away. This practice reminds me of how they try to pinch you at every corner in less developed countries. Was I really in London or was this all a bad dream? Our stomachs hurt afterwards and instead we grabbed from cheap sushi from inside Waterloo Station, and were immediately more content. Avoid! read more

LOVED THIS PLACE. We were looking for a relaxed restaurant to meet with some friends on our recent trip back home to the UK (from the US). We'd called a few pubs but they weren't open to having our 15 month old there on a Friday evening (which we understand). We booked Cotto at the last minute and were so pleased. Our daughter had the avocado and prawn starter which was really tasty and substantial. I had the Octopus - and was delighted with the spicey kick. Followed by the lobster pasta - which was enough to fill up by boyfriend after his delicious lamb chops. The house wine was great and our GF friend was very surprised with the range of GF food. The best part of the evening was how fabulous the staff were. Not only at their proper jobs, but they played with our daughter while we ate.
