I am so incredibly impressed with Counterbalance! I was visiting for a family emergency for a few weeks from the East Coast and desperately to do something to make myself feel more.. myself. On my way to pick up meds for my sister, I stopped in to see if someone at Counterbalance could clean up my undercut so I could at least feel good about how I look. They were SO helpful and squeezed me into their packed schedule. Jack was so kind and skillful and got me cleaned up and looking amazing! It totally turned around how I felt about the whole day. I was just strolling around Queen Anne, when I noticed this dope AF barbershop and remembered that I have a hot date coming up, so I desperately needed a neck trim. I popped my head and and loved the ambiance. I asked Peter, who is the MAN, if he had some time to fit me in. He didn't even hesitate to brush his chair off, dust off the barber cape, and welcome me to take a seat. He was very nice, we had a great quick convo, and before I knew it, he was finished. Today was my third time getting a haircut at Counterbalance and it was a great experience. I just looked via their online booking service and was able to schedule a haircut pretty quickly. When I arrived, I showed Piotr a photo of the haircut I wanted and he got to it. He is easy to talk to and the atmosphere is very laid back. It seemed like he took his time to make sure I had a high quality haircut and the outcome looked really good. I also appreciated the fact that he took the time to educate me on what kind of haircut he did and gave me tips on how I should style my hair to get my desired look. Overall, this is a quality barbershop with fair prices ($40 a haircut), and consistent customer service. I will definitely be returning back next time I need a haircut. read more

Went in for a 'trim', I wanted the sides and back cleaned up, going for a longer looking hairstyle. Julio said no problem with confidence, spun me around looking away from the mirror! (should of known then) Proceeded to have good conversation, mentioned how he 'wouldn't cut his girls hair during the pandemic because he only cuts hair short'! (Again, I should have known). Well when it he was all said and done, Julio gave me the haircut he wanted to give, not what I asked for. It's not that he did a 'bad job', he just gave me the cut he wanted to give. Jay did a great job cutting my hair and was a pleasure to chat with. Also, during the haircut, he was careful to move my mask as little as possible and only when necessary. I was completely satisfied with the end result. I appreciated that Counterbalance provided hand sanitizer and that all the barbers and customers were wearing masks -- this certainly made me more comfortable getting my hair cut there. At $40 for a haircut ($50 as of August, I believe), it's definitely a little pricey for me. However, given the great service and convenient location, I'm fine paying a premium. read more

I went there for a buzz cut and beard trim for my wedding. I was really disappointed as the job was half done (actually, I was really pissed off). I went back home and had to redo everything myself: the beard was not cut evenly; they also missed some spots for the hair (and it's a buzz cut...). I leave 2 stars inseat of one as my wife said that the back trim was nicely done. But for ~$65 and about 20 minutes of work, I will continue doing it myself... read more

Called in and was happy they took a walk in. I needed a haircut for a new job that I was starting and some of the other "hip" spots were so over booked. Julio took care of me (he was the only one there) and was a pleasure to talk to. Asked me what I wanted and went straight to work. He made some suggestions and I went with them. Only thing that bugged me was he never really turned the chair so I could see my hair during the cut, but I know why. Because he knew exactly what he was doing! Piotr and Julio are both exceptional barbers. I used to go to Acme Barbershop to have Piotr trim my hair and beard and followed him to his own shop in Queen Anne. I've also had Julio cut my hair once or twice before they got the shop and I was also completely satisfied with my cut. The shop is very clean and contemporary and has a fridge full of beer and a few bar tables for waiting patrons which feels much less awkward than the customary chairs lined up when you wait your turn in the barber's chair. Piotr is very easy going and the he seems to be genuinely interested in what you have to say and the conversation never feels forced. The quality of the haircuts is also top notch. Being a bald guy I've felt a little blown off going into other shops to just get a buzzcut or neck clean-up, but Piotr has never treated me any different than any of his hairier customers. Unprofessional and unsanitary. I booked an appointment for 5:30 on a Sunday. When I arrived on time, Julio was still working on the guy before me. He didn't apologize for being behind and didn't tell me how long it would be. 20 minutes later he's still cutting the guy's hair. He didn't even acknowledge that I was waiting. No apology. No estimate. So I got up and left. What's the point of making an appointment? This place is also really dirty. Apparently they don't bother to vacuum because there is hair everywhere, even far from the barber chairs. With so many barber shops in Seattle, Julio needs to get his act together. read more

I had my hair cut @ CounterBalance by Piotr a couple of weeks ago. I was pretty explicit in advance about not wanting it short, just a bit taken off. Piotr proceeded to use clippers to cut it much shorter than i wanted and just kinda did what he thought best rather than what i requested. He used the clippers to do most of the haircut, and said that the barbers there used clippers 'just to be efficient'. Efficient thought it may have been ... haircut was just meh - again, shorter than i wanted and a bit asymmetric. I'd say these guys are good barbers, if you want a very simple haircut quickly, but if you want a more nuanced haircut, or to have them do what you prefer, i'd try elsewhere for sure. read more

Christine is awesome. I'm new to town and she gave me lots of great tips on farmers markets and such, and she's just really friendly and fun in general. Perfect haircut too!! It helps if you love dogs (which I do) but she has big comfy crates for them to go into when it gets busy, and they happily went in at one point and took naps. I stopped in on Superbowl Sunday for a beard trim. I'm from Oakland, and just needed my somewhat voluminous chinbeard cleaned up while in Seattle for a few days. Piotr was nothing short of excellent. Friendly, engaging, genuine, and very skilled with the scissors and clippers, just as a barber should be. What else? He knows bikes and the Seattle motorbike scene.
