Sea Time Fishing Charters

We were excited to go out fishing while up in York. We searched around and found Sea Time and chose…read morethem for our charter. The day before the trip Lawerence/Larry called my wife to change the time of departure to 10:00 am instead of 11:00 am due to the potential for severe weather. So we agreed and were super excited to get out on the water. We arrived at Pepperrell Cove and grabbed some snacks at the Bistro. We messaged Lawerence/Larry that we arrived and asked where to park as there are were only a few spots that were not reserved or restricted. We found the boat and say that Lawerence/Larry was on the boat but a college age kid named Kai was there. He told us that he would be skippering the boat not Lawerence/Larry. This was never communicated to us that Lawerence/Larry wasn't going to actually take us out. This set the stage for a bad day on the boat as Kai was a great guy but there was no bait, and ice or cooler for us to use. The most important aspect was there was no live bait fish for us to use. Kai took us out to Snag Fish for Poggie first. We were able to get some using the 3 pointed hooks without bait by drawing through the school and snagging them. We then switched up to fishing for Mackeral. We were only able to get a few and the 5 foot swells and rain started to take a toll on one of our party. Kai took us into the mouth of Little Harbor to then fish for Strippers. At this point we were almost half way through the trip and just started actually fish for Strippers. Since the tide was still going out we had little success and the poggie were too big for the strippers to take on. We ran out of bait as the few we had were dying off so Kai decided to take us back out into the 5 foot swells to get live bait. As we hit Kittery Point I asked him if we could just use cut bait fish for Strippers. He agreed and then took us up the river to the Naval Yard to fish. The water was much calmer but the wind was pretty steady so we were chased off a couple of times by the Navy's Police boat. So we only really fished for strippers for about 45 minutes in two locations since most of the time was spent navigating to fish for bait fish. We totally felt like Lawerence/Larry passed of this charter to Kai at the last minute hence why there was no live bait or cooler full of ice. We brought this to his attention and he messaged at 5:20 am this morning with the following dismissive message. Turns out that it is illegal to snag fish in Maine. So while Kai was a great kid the owner of the boat is not very good at ensure a great charter since the live bait was provided and we had to get ourselves. UPDATE! To Lawerence the fact that the mackerel we were catching were less than 8 inches in length and were for bait fish for the strippers was no a great charter experience. The fact we wasted over half the actual time of fishing for bait and boating around to 4 different spots was also not an enjoyable experience. The fact that there was no cooler for our snacks and drinks was also not a great experience. The fact you were communicating to my wife the day before and never mentioned you were not going to skipper the boat and we would be skippered by some else was also a little misleading. The fact that there was no bait other than cut bait came across like you handed off the charter at the last minute hence the no live bait. Any other charters I have been on the boat is stocked so the clients can spend more time on the fish rather than getting bait fish.

Caught 11 monster stripers. Most were over 40" and largest was 50"!!!!!…read more Larry has the magic touch. Did a half day inshore charter with a couple friends and Larry's Sea Time charter. In heavy thick fog, somehow Larry found a school of pogies. There were boils of stripers feeding on them, like nothing I have ever seen in my life. 3 times we had 2 fish on the line at the same time. Eventually many other boats showed up at the same spot one they saw what was going on, but Larry was clearly was the leader. So much fun! It was my second charter with Larry. First time my son caught a 46". I actually have my own boat in Kittery but I've done charters with Larry so I can learn how to fish the local waters from him. He's an entertaining guy, with a lot of local knowledge, and is happy to teach if you are interested. I'd highly recommend Larry and SeaTime Charters.

I rate F/V (fishing vessel) Nor'easter Deep Sea Fishing three out of five stars. It's OK…read more Pros: 1. It's a good deal. Our group of eight paid $805.60 total or $100.70 per person. This amount was prepaid online with a card. We tipped the mate, Steve, $200 total or $25 per person = 25% tip. 15% was the suggested tip posted on the sign on the boat. We tipped in cash. Remember to bring enough cash to tip the mate. We were told he worked separately from the F/V Nor'easter Deep Sea Fishing business. The boat left around 6:45am and we were back around 4:15pm. So, we were gone for about 9.5 hours, longer than expected. The expected time away was 8 hours: 2-hour boat ride out, 4 hours of fishing, and 2-hour boat ride in. Our boat ride out was roughly 2 hours. We were told we were going 36 miles out. Then, we changed fishing spots 2-3 times. I think we went farther out because our trip back in was longer, like 2.5 to 2.75 hours in. On top of that, there was a refueling stop on the way back. Hence the 9.5 hours being away. Real fishing time was probably still around 4 hours, maybe 4.5. I mention all that above because for $125.70 per person, we could catch and keep all the allowable fish we wanted. And every fish was nicely fileted and bagged by Steve for us to take home and eat. Our group caught more fish than we could eat. Therefore, unfortunately, we had to throw some of our cooked fish away. It was good, fresh fish too. We had various whiting - haddock and pollock - and cusk. We had to throw cod and smaller fish back. Dogfish sharks were kept. 2. As mentioned above, Steve fileted and bagged all the fish we could catch. And we caught quite a bit (this can be considered another pro). 3. Captain Mike and mate Steve were good at taking pictures of people with their catches. All pictures taken with Mike's phone were posted on the F/V Nor'easter Facebook page before we docked back in Kennebunk: https://www.facebook.com/noreasterfishing. Cons: 1. Captain Mike wasn't nice to us from the start. I get people being a certain way and there are different types of culture. Mike greeted us in the parking lot by telling us, "You're late" and to "Stop lollygagging." He also said words to the effect of, "Our entire boat is late because of you." A family showed up behind us and we overhead Mike say the same brusk things to them. He really set the tone for great customer service off the bat. He wasn't having any BS. One or two of the guys in our group loved it because they're kind of like Mike too. We like to joke that we're a bunch of a**holes. But seriously, if you don't like being treated like this, book your fishing trip elsewhere. This behavior is consistent with what I read for F/V Nor'easter Deep Sea Fishing on Google Reviews. For the record, we did as the instructions said and showed up on time. The instructions said to show up before 6:30pm. When Mike was talking to us, my phone said 6:29am, so we were on time. We weren't late. Again, I expected this kind of treatment after reading the Google Reviews. I considered it Northeast hospitality. 2. The boat was smaller and not as nice as several in our group expected. Again, I read reviews and looked at pictures so I had a better idea of what to expect. You can only expect so much out of a boat for an all-day fishing trip that costs only $100 per person (before tip). I counted about 20 customers. Plus captain Mike, mate Steve, and a few of their friends/associates, the boat was full and snug. All seating was uncovered bench seating. So, the trip can tire you out as the seating is not comfortable, provides no back support, and you're constantly keeping your balance. Unless of course you're someone who's seasoned to the seas, which most people aren't. We're landlubbers. The stern is where most of the fishing took place. However, about five folks went up and fished from the bow (front). They had to so there was enough room on the stern (back). The reason why is because Steve blocked most of the port side of the stern with buckets (port is left if facing bow). The reason why most of the port side was blocked was because the currents caused fishing lines to flow under the boat. A couple times, lines/hooks from people fishing on the port side would get stuck with lines/hooks from people fishing on the starboard side (starboard is right if facing bow). All of this is to say the boat was crowded, especially when fishing. 3. There was only one toilet, the stall was tiny, the toilet paper was damp and thin, and the flush was waterless -- we had to pump our waste down the toilet hole with up-down action. Oh yeah, and there wasn't soap and water, so if you're someone who likes washing their hands after using the bathroom/using a shared bathroom with strangers, you should bring your own hand wipes. I advise against going number two on the boat if you can help it. 4. Captain Mike ate our cookies without asking us. He had his hand in our cookie box in the wheelhouse.

What a great day on the water and captain and mate were first rate. We all caught fish and had…read moreplenty to take home for a meal. If you enjoy fishing don't pass up but I will add there is some work involved reeling in for 200 to 375 feet.

We revisited Vaughan Woods at a different time of the year, and it's still such a cool spot (though…read morefar busier than it was when we came in autumn a few years ago). It's a state park that's open year long -- during the shoulder season, you can park outside the closed gates and walk in. This time we came when the gates were open; but, there was no attendant to check our state parks pass. It looks like payment is on the honor system (please pay so we can preserve beautiful trails like this!). I'll reiterate what I said in my previous review: It's located along Salmon Falls River (which separates Maine and New Hampshire). And with 3+ miles of hiking trails, it's easy to choose-your-own-adventure. So, whether you're looking to walk a lot or little, spend the day here or just a quick half hour, or if you're a local looking for a new running trail, be sure to explore the "old growth forest" (I saw this used elsewhere and looked into it: did you know this is a term that essentially means it's an ancient woodland, or a natural place that has aged without disruption?)! And it's accessible too: the extremely well groomed, well marked, mostly widened walking paths are easy to navigate (there are some hilly areas; and if it's not winter you're DEFINITELY going to want to bring bug spray). Also, from here you can access the grounds of the restored Hamilton House (built by merchant Jonathan Hamilton in the late eighteenth century) which sits on a stunning grassy knoll among cleared open green space overlooking the river (we actually saw a beaver this most recent time!) on one side and a beautifully maintained garden on the other side.

Want to get away from the sweating masses over-crowding the beach? Not up for sitting on your buns,…read morebaking in the summer sun? Want some peace & quiet instead of screaming tots and squeaky playground swings? I did. Not that there's anything wrong with the typical midsummer Maine beach experience. It just was NOT my vibe for this getaway. And so we sought out land trusts and mountains and parks, including one of our favorite spots to hit some pretty trails: Vaughan Woods. First, even in the middle of the summer and several cars in the lots, we barely saw another person. On the river trail--which I particularly love for all the scenic views of the river and benches to sit and rest--we had two couples cross our path. Very quick, smiley "hellos" and off they went. So peaceful! I'm mobility-challenged but I had a recent treatment and felt a little more mobile and stable. I took my time and my husband was a great helper. I'd say the river trail can get a bit challenging for anyone with a knee/ankle/foot/balance issue. But if conditions aren't wet, you go slow, and rest at the benches, you might be able to do it! The toilet stall is a wooden structure that is open to the air at the top of the walls before the roof begins. It's a toilet set over a pit, and you could definitely get a wheelchair in, but I don't recall seeing any grab bars. There was plenty of toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Like other places (parks, beach), we noticed it was "carry in, carry out." There are several picnic tables surrounding the parking lot, and we enjoyed a post-hike snack. This place is worth the drive out to South Berwick. Give it a go!
