Stopped at this hidden gem on my way from Charleston to Alabama and am glad I did. As I drove by, I noticed the pig on the sign so I knew it would be good Q. What's the deal with South Carolina-style barbecue? That's a question I didn't know marinated subconsciously in my mind as I drove southeast, from Georgia to Charleston. My wife found Countryside on a review website, maybe Yelp. We live in Memphis and love dry-rubs and pulled pork with our tomato-based sauces. But, I'd recently ventured into the Texas hill country and farther west, and learned of new cosmopolitan meat-eating styles, replete with unique side courses, etc. So, having accidentally detoured down a rural highway, we entered the residential-looking vinyl door of this concrete building. I immediately noticed, on the buffet line, a tray of charred ribs. In front of it: a stack of plates and five or six plastic bottles of various sauces. Okay, what had I heard about Carolina-style bbq? I knew to expect a vinegar base. That was it. "Excuse me," I said to one of the cooks pacing behind the buffet line, "do I put the sauce on the meat here?" "Most people pour it on when they sit down," she answered. So, I picked out a sauce that had the coloration of Italian dressing. I filled a plastic ramekin with it and sat it at our table. I went back to the buffet. Beside the ribs sat a tray of what looked like refried beans, only with meat in them. Again, I called the cook over to me. "Is that beans?" I asked. "Hash. Put it over the rice." Hash. That was a new one for me. South Carolinian-style pork developed, by way of German immigrants, an infatuation with cooking less-valuable parts of the hog (i.e., organs or other tissues) with root vegetables into a thick, brothy hash, that is then poured over white rice. They cook it low and slow at Countryside, and the result is a rich, succulent sort of pate. I made myself a plate of pulled pork, also. I poured the vinegary sauce, with its hint of tomato, over the pork and gobbed down one of the best and most surprising pork meals I've ever had. Of note: South Carolina is also famous for a mustard-based, vinegar sauce. Thank you, Countryside, for introducing me to South Carolina barbecue. read more

For Father's Day, we decided to take my dad to a BBQ joint we had never been to. Checked the South Carolina BBQ Trail and found Country Side BBQ in Swansea. It is a small unassuming building. We arrived just before 5:00 and there was a line of cars for the drive thru. We parked, went inside, and were greeted with a smile and hospitality. We had all got the all-you-can-eat buffet. We found the price reasonable: three adults, a seven year old, and a two year old ate for $36. The highlights: Mac & Cheese was fantastic. The squash casserole was very good. I enjoyed the chicken and dumplings. The fried chicken was light but crispy. The creamed corn was tasty. The hush puppies were dense, but good. The banana pudding was good as well. Everything seemed homemade. My dad and I liked the BBQ. They only have mustard sauce, which is true to the region. My wife was not a fan of the BBQ. So we were sort of divided on the "Q". Overall, this was a good experience and well worth the drive down from Columbia. By 5:30, the place was packed! read more

We just happened to stumble upon this place while in Lexington for a ball tournament and I'm so glad we did!!!! Wonderful food! Extremely friendly staff, and clean. Everything was so tasty even down to the dessert. It was buffet but they have plexiglass and they fix whatever you want. We will be back!!! read more

Came back home to visit family and stopped by. The food is on point! I even bought a T-shirt and to go plates for later. Definitely not what it used to be. I went in and ordered two takeout meals. Thinking my food was gonna be freshly prepared is where i went wrong. I didnt order from the buffet or food bar. Which ever its called. So i didn't expect that that's where my food was going to come from. When i got my food it was cold and dry. Very disappointed. This used to be my favorite southern cooking. Family friendly environment, very casual, reasonable prices. Very busy, but only waited a few minutes for an open table. Price includes all you can eat meal - dinner, dessert, and beverage. Was a bit odd that all the dishes are disposable (styrofoam plates, plastic silverware), but it does keep the costs lower. On our back from Edisto Island, SC to Michigan we stopped at this unpretentious BBQ buffet spot for lunch. It was wonderful with friendly and prompt service, and very reasonable prices. The food was fresh and most of all, the Carolina BBQ fell off the bone. Each day they have a different special. We were lucky enough to enjoy the ribs! We stumbled upon this gem on our drive from Charleston to Atlanta. It was definitely worth the stop. The servers and staff were great, definitely the definition of "southern hospitality." My pulled pork sandwich was fantastic, and my family enjoyed the many options in the buffet. 2/3 of us liked their mustard based BBQ sauce, for what it's worth. Their sweet tea was good and very much bottomless. Prices seemed very reasonable, especially coming from dining in big cities. Happened to be in the area and yelp reviews showed this place to good. They did not disappoint! Place was a little small for dining in but they made up for it with good ol' country cookin! Would have given them 5 stars, but gave 4 stars only because they add sauce to their meat instead of the "natural" flavor of the BBQ, which I prefer. One of the most successful google searches ever! Absolutely delicious and the people - employees and customers alike - could not have been more welcoming to the strangers in town. The buffet had an incredible selection of scratch made meats, sides and desserts. I wanted to try it all and almost did. And they even fry up a fresh batch of fresh-cut okra if you want a basket for the table. It was just delightful and I had not had a such a true South Carolina bbq Sunday lunch that made me feel like i was home since i left SC 6 years ago. It is worth the drive to Swansea. (The bathroom is out side) the only bad thing is that they are only open Friday and Saturday. But that's probably a good thing or the whole town wouldn't fit in a single door. read more

This place is one of our local places. They are only open on Fridays and Saturdays. They have a great all u can eat buffet. On the second Monday of every month they have a fish fry all u can eat buffet as well. Great place for good old country food. Home made sweet tea. A pitcher of which is placed on your table.
