Absolute is a bit different from the other more trendy galleries popping up in Old Town. However, that probably has to do with the wide variety of artists carried by Absolute. They seem to also feature custom framing, so if you're an artist or just a person with some art that needs a home, Absolute is a decent place to go. The owner was nice and said "hello" then commented briefly on the weather. Standout pieces of art included wooden framed maps of Michigan which were somewhat topographical, custom made clocks, and a beautiful hand crafted wooden rocking chair.

We're weird like that. Anyway, the weather on my trip had been pretty mild EXCEPT the damn day we decided to visit Old Town. It was bitter cold and kind of raining but we tried to make the best of it. Old Town is comprised of mixture of local, small businesses and it is also the greater Lansing area's arts district. Indeed there are several art galleries and studios, as well as interior design stores. I walked into a couple of the stores looking for gifts to take home, but found that most of the shops sell tchotchkes. The interior design places had nice stuff, but most of the items were pretty expensive. Al in all, it's a nice little area to walk around in the afternoon. Some years ago I went to an awesome beer festival here; I assume they host a decent amount of festivals in the area. I think that there's still a lot of work to be done in the area, they definitely need more restaurants and a greater offering (and cheaper) at the stores.

The first floor exhibit, featuring Syrian-American artist, Diana Al-Hadid, was gorgeous and engaging. The basement was called the "CORE" and was a Hodge podge of random art. I wasn't fond of how this was set up at all. I love art but other than the featured exhibit, we weren't engaged. The upstairs Mekong art exhibit was pretty cool but small and scattered. I am used to museums having places for students to research and study in. There's not a lot here. Also, there's not really a cafe and the shop is small. Cute stuff in the store though. Overall, the museum was worth checking out in the area but there's no need to make a special trip.

While the museum is small, they pack several meaningful and amazing exhibits in the halls each time we visit. I am a fan of contemporary vision. This place typically has a lot of work to reflect on and I love the multimedia displays. The kids have grown up coming here to reflect on their own interpretations of the displays and what it means to them. The staff and volunteers are friendly. They also have a cute area for gifts.
