The mother's day fiasco started when our food arrived. My wife's salad was not ever made. I understand mistakes happen. No big deal. The waitress fixed it right away. My sister ordered the two piece fried chicken special. My mom noticed that the two pieces of chicken on my sisters plate were both wings. We all though that was weird. She shared this concern with your waitress. In hopes of getting the managers attention. Instead of getting the managers attention. The cook came out and told us that the there was two pieces of chicken on her plate and that if we didn't like it we could get out!!! So I replied, okay we will. After your cook left the manager came up and told us that the two piece special was two wings mash potatoes and corn (for 6.99 I think). You proceed to tell us that the two piece special was meant for little old ladies and how it was a really good deal and if we didn't like it we could get out. So I replied again, okay we will. We were preparing to leave when your cook came back out to our table. He walked up to my mother and I and stated... It's mother's day you need to be F$%^ing nice before I kick your A$$!!! My wife left in tears. Not to mention I had my two year old and two month old with us. My sister also had her two year old daughter with her. We were merely thrown out of your restaurant without even trying to work this small issue out. Cussed and threatened at. If you would have discussed all of our issues it would not have been a problem. I will never step foot in either of your restaurants again. One of the reasons we had concern was that my father received your three piece special for two dollars more and received two breasts and a leg. We merely thought you had plated the meals wrong and was wondering what the two piece chicken was supposed to be. Instead we were treated with total disrespect. A man (your cook) threatening to beat up my mother on mothers day. I really hope you take this message seriously and change your managing style. I used to be a weekly customer, you have lost my business forever. I forgot to mention I stuck around long enough to pay for all of the food we didn't get to eat. I did not want you to take it out of your waitresses pay just because we were thrown out it was not there fault.

This is always a good thing. They serve breakfast all day, numerous burgers, sandwiches, and various plates. We ordered the reuben and BLT sandwiches and the catfish plate with mac n cheese. The veggie of the day was green beans. Everything was good except for the mac n cheese, which didn't taste very fresh -- you can tell the pasta and cheese had become coagulated. It wasn't creamy cheesy as good quality mac n cheese should be. Wasn't even homemade. And the green beans? Straight from the can! It was mushy and bland. Who wants to eat soggy green beans?! This was rather disappointing. Service was straightforward. Free parking in their small lot but also ample street parking.

The Java chip, though, was a letdown. It was advertised as a blended coffee, but it had zero coffee flavor. I ended up ordering a shot of espresso to add to it, which helped a bit. Without the shot, I'd give it a 3/10--with the shot, maybe a 5/10. After that, we headed upstairs to the brewery. The friends we were with were impressed by the huge selection of beers, ciders, and wines on tap. I ordered the margherita flatbread and oh my god--so freaking good. 10/10, no question. I'd order it again in a heartbeat. Everyone else was happy with their food too, and our server was super friendly and really attentive. Overall, great vibes, great service, and that flatbread was the star of the show!

We're staying in the "Little Apple", Manhattan, Ks. Home of K-State University. Well also home of The Chef, which should be just as famous and endeared. The Chef is this gorgeous, chic, yet not so that it's kitschy diner in the heart of the main district of Manhattan. A classic diner, from the hospitality of the service staff, to the lunch counter with cute doodads for salt and pepper shakers. You've been here, because you've been home, or so it feels. Yes, be prepared to snuggle in for a teensy wait, because everyone loves home cooking, especially when someone else is doing the dishes afterwards. The portions are truly well beyong the prices. I ordered a CFS, smothered in sausage gravy. Was plated a Texas sized portion, thick steak, lightly crispily breaded, with a savory southern styled country gravy that honestly looked a bit intimidating in quantity, but I'm no fraidy cat. I came to conquer. Two perfectly running over medium eggs, whites done, yolks on the run, my style. A mountain of softly crunchy, better-than-homestyle fried potatoes, and a slice of thick cut wheat toast. This was a ton O' grub Bubba dub. Each component treated and seasoned well enough, to eat stand alone. Our meal partner kept checking on the family to see if we needed any more of that rich Arabica bean juice, or water, with the care of your fav Auntee from Mississippi, but right here, in the Land of Ahhhhs. I took that esophageal excitement with relish. Well not relish, with a sweet house made strawberry compote on toast. I wiped the plate clean. $15. You read that right... just $15. Oh I understand $15 is real money in this economy, but in relationship to the level of service, quality of service, epic portion sizes, and the finesse with which this small diner beat most anywhere we've been, and we share 39 years of worldwide travel as an old married couple, this was a bargain at $15, in the 90s. For sure back home in Texas this was honestly a $21 - $26 plate, and we're a beef producing state. Still with me? You're the real hero for hanging in here, and I truly appreciate you. If ever you want to taste Americas 250 years, in one sitting, visit The Chef in Manhattan, Ks. It's families feeding the community. No political spin, no feeling unwelcomed. An open door, to open hearts, feeding hungry bellies, without crushing your purses and wallets. They leave room in your account to make you want to reciprocate with generosity in returning, but also, tipping heartfully, without pressure. I miss when a meal was worth tipping huge without feeling it wasn't worth it. Here at the Chef, the earn it the old way.
