We had not been anywhere for quite a while together or separately so this was a easy get away as it is about an hour away from where we live. There are only two ways to get here so check your map before you leave as one way is a very curvy ;() road around Cuyamaca or you can spend an extra 10 or 15 minutes to come to Ramona which I prefer. Although, it is more Scenic going around the Cuyamaca area and seeing the the lake. We spent a couple of hours Friday walking around Julian and there are lots of tourist shops with some interesting items, several breweries and a handful of restaurants and lots of pie shops. If you like pie you'll get a real variety here. For instance, boysenberry Apple Dutch crumb. Yum! We did stop at a barbecue place that was just okay and were able to sit outside. Saturday we came back into town and made a our way up to Menghini Winery which I had not been to in the many years. I was very happy to see it still open and spoke with one of the owners briefly as she told me there were only three people working there and they were only bottling three types of wine. My son's wife and I bought a nice Chardonnay for $27. I tried a little of the Merlot which I liked but was really looking for a Malbec or Meritage which is my favorite. There are a few wineries up here one close to the one we visited called Vulcan and there's a lake there small and one in town. I am posting a little information on the history of the town of Julian so if you're interested you can follow through. It was settled in 1869 and the Julian Hotel was run and owned by the first Afro-American. There used to be a carriage with horses that would take you around town didn't see that this time. There's also a fun mine, a lovely gem shop, a pistol and knife shop. The fresh air was great and the sunrises and sunsets were spectacular. I look forward to coming back here with another adult leave the three teenagers behind. LOL

Once we stepped inside they had alot of plenty nice looking quilts for sale and for auction. They also had other several little things for sale. We ended up leaving with a homemade lavender candle that actually came in handy at the hotel we ended up staying at lol.

We saw a rare Gloria Swanson silent film along w a talk by a brilliant film historian. Every show opens with a little performance but we were lucky enough to see a silent film which means that the organist live scores the entire film just as it would have been done in the 20s ! I'm constantly going to revival and old theaters like The Egyptian, New Beverly, and Aero theatre and wanted to add this one to the rotation. Essentially, they transport you back in time to the early 20th century when movie theaters started taking off! And not just about the old films they show, we're talking OG Dr. Pepper in a glass bottle and lobby cards and photos on the wall. A giant Wurlitzer organ where our organist started off the night's festivities with a few words of history and a few songs on the organ. We even did some sing-alongs lol. Everyone in the red vests are volunteers keeping this running. You can sense the deep passion they all have for preserving this history and a deep love of cinema. Got a brochure calendar for showings through June and will now make sure I come out at least once a month.

Here in downtown Riverside, you have Mariposa Alley (Butterflies). During lunch we were trying to figure out what was around the area that was worth checking out. This popped up and was a 2 minute walk away. Just around the corner from Main Street next to a parking structure. It's a small little alley way that house all the fun cute butterflies hanging off the wall. The same concept as Collette Miller with the famous Angel wings scattered all over the place. One side of the wall is a massive mural of butterflies and flowers while the opposite side are butterflies. All different sizes and shapes hanging off the wall. You have the colorful wings lower down for that perfect photo op as well as smaller one hanging off the wall. A cute little walkway that's hidden off the Main Street. It's tucked in between the parking structure and city hall. A fun photo spot that's well maintained and clean. Alleyway was not messy one bit and in pretty good shape and clean.

A great stop if you love street art, butterflies or looking for something free and fun to do!

Since we got here right when they opened, there was a bit of a backup as there was only one security guard manning the check in area. I do commend him in terms of the thoroughness in checking bags, etc. I know some people in line were a little annoyed about the speed as he required that all zippered pouches be opened, which in my case was like 10 different compartments in my backpack as well as my electronics case for my computer equipment. Still not a big deal as im sure my clients understand the protocols and didnt mind that we started a few minutes late to get everyone through.

It was created in 1999 by sculptor Lisa…read moreReinertson and commissioned by the Riverside African-American Historical Society together with the city -- and standing in front of it, you can feel that care in every detail. Dr. King is shown walking alongside two children, a deliberate nod to his hope that one day kids would be judged by their character rather than the color of their skin. Reinertson actually worked with two local children from the community who posed for the piece, which makes it feel rooted in Riverside itself rather than just a generic tribute. The granite base reads "I HAVE A DREAM," and there's something quietly moving about reading those words in stone while City Hall hums along in the background -- a reminder that the work Dr. King spoke of is still ongoing. What I appreciate most is that this isn't an isolated monument. It sits along the Main Street pedestrian mall, part of a small walking museum that also includes tributes to Mahatma Gandhi, Dosan Ahn Chang Ho, and Eliza Tibbets -- figures connected by their fight for justice and dignity in different corners of the world. In 2023, the city completed an enhancement project around the monument, giving the space a more intentional setting for reflection. It's free, peaceful, and easy to visit, with benches nearby if you want to just sit for a minute. I never feel rushed here. It's the kind of place that asks something of you -- not much, just a pause -- and gives you a little perspective in return.
