This is the best Dim Sum I've had (and I eat it in Chinatown a lot). I love the Brixton twist Jerk Chicken Dim Sum!

    Review Highlights - Courtesan

We visited a couple of dim sum restaurants in China town before, in a not so pretty environment, with an ok food and were asked to leave the moment our food was finished.

Firecracker was a fun little joint that almost seems hidden from the street. You walk down a flight of stairs and a cute restaurant with private karaoke rooms is waiting for you! I was quite impressed with how well the rooms held the karaoke music in- we really only heard what was happening when people were walking in and out of their rooms. We ordered some soup and dim sum and everything was quite tasty! I did knock a star because truthfully service was not great, but it didn't appear to be that way for everyone. It felt like the staff heard our accent and was attentive to everyone in the restaurant except us.

I loved their bento boxes because you can do many variety of options and pick and choose as you wish. In my case I had all proteins and few vegetables. Our office has avocados and fruits so I didn't feel that I needed that extra layer of veggies. For 9 £, or under 12 bucks, one can get a whole lot more lunch than one would get, say from San Francisco. I also found the decor surprisingly pan Asia which is neat. This is one of the approachable places you could get by Westminster Abbey, and given how sad and limited the food choices are around here, I would give it a four star - simply it's within walking distance from work and it's what you'd expect from an Asian fusion restaurant.

Food: I reserved the vegetarian tasting menu. It was very good. Each plate was tasty, but admittedly a little forgetful. I know I enjoyed my meal, but I could not tell you which dish was my favorite. Every thing was well plated and pleasing to the eye though. Service: Service was generally good. I was seated at the bar area, understandable as a solo reservation. However, given how the dishes came out, I didn't have enough space most of the time for the dishes. The servers and such were all nice and knowledgeable. They were trained well. My main server did stand uncomfortably close to me a few times to describe my meal. He also asked pointedly why I chose the vegetarian option that evening. He seemed bothered when I said it was because I was vegetarian. However, even with these minor details, it was still good service overall. TL;DR - a michelin take on Chinese food that was tasty with decent service.

However, the noodles and other dishes were at best....meh. Shu Mai & shrimp dumplings were so good we had another round of the same. I'd come here solely for the dim sum and all the choices are widely displayed in the window. You can't help but choose the visual menu over the printed one. Calimari was tough, greasy, and required extra jaw muscles to chomp. The shrimp in chili sauce was more drowned in black bean sauce and had no spicy heat to it. The buffet had a few very tired looking dishes that not only seemed like they wanted to be elsewhere (like the bin) but actively angry to be held against their will. Honestly, it wasn't a restaurant, it was a food police situation. Actually eating the food confirmed my impression, as it actively fought being swallowed and digested. It wasn't tasteless, I heartily would have preferred that. I'm not sure what the "chicken" that I ate actually was, but I am actively convinced it was either pigeon or cat. No amount of ketchup, which is what the "sweet and sour" sauce was, could disguise the fact that I was eating flesh from sort of animal possibly undiscovered by science. If you value your digestion, and have any small affection for your taste buds, do not eat here.

I must admit I was wary cause of the raiting but a local friend of mine; insisted on his recommendation and I gave in. I'm glad I did. The food was pretty good. Ordered a bit of everything to try out and it was delicious. The service was not amazing. Even when the restaurant was not very busy; seemed like the staff was more interested in their chats than to help around the patrons. Also, every time they will bring something it felt like a bothersome. I am only giving 4 starts purely on the food. If I count the service; I may give 3

I especially liked the pork cheung fun and the crispy noodles with pork. The xiao long bao and egg custards were good too. It was about 25 GBP per person, which is not bad for this quality of dim sum. The staff are pretty friendly and surprisingly hospitable - even for a slow eater like myself, I did not feel rushed at all and they often came by to refill my water whenever they noticed it getting low. The service speed is also very fast. There was a ~10 min wait to get in on Sunday afternoon, which isn't too bad at all. While the food didn't quite wow me enough for a full 5 stars, I would probably give Orient London 4.5 stars if I could. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for good dim sum in London.
