I must admit I was wary cause of the raiting but a local friend of mine; insisted on his recommendation and I gave in. I'm glad I did. The food was pretty good. Really good dim sum spot in Chinatown! They serve a wide variety of classic authentic dim sum dishes in a nice and comfortable setting. I especially liked the pork cheung fun and the crispy noodles with pork. The xiao long bao and egg custards were good too. It was about 25 GBP per person, which is not bad for this quality of dim sum. The staff are pretty friendly and surprisingly hospitable - even for a slow eater like myself, I did not feel rushed at all and they often came by to refill my water whenever they noticed it getting low. The service speed is also very fast. There was a ~10 min wait to get in on Sunday afternoon, which isn't too bad at all. While the food didn't quite wow me enough for a full 5 stars, I would probably give Orient London 4.5 stars if I could. Introducing a local to dim sum in her own country was a dicey proposition, but I'm glad everything went well finding Orient with both a comfortable atmosphere, a calm noise level, and a reasonably diverse dim sum menu that covered all of the basics plus some good variations. The preparations here and recipes used seem to have been slightly modified from their traditional origins. Items like Xiao Long Bao didn't arrive with their traditional black vinegar accompaniment. That the service staff was kind enough to observe that as a couple he would probably like XO sauce, which was appreciated. It came also with a side of Sriracha, which was a little odd but acceptable. Beef cheung fan was really excellent. I found my favorite Wu Gol, fried taro balls prepared, using correctly authentic beef caul fat. The Gai lan, Chinese broccoli, was steamed perfectly. Was amused that they presumed I read Mandarin fluently enough to use that version of the order card, and I probably should've asked for an English version, but I persevered anyway making only one major mistake by ordering gai lan in soup instead of the oyster sauce version. But both versions were actually very good. Pricing here is approximately 20% higher than the less fancy places in the area, but makes up for it with very pleasant atmosphere and a somewhat refined ambience. As others have mentioned, the staff allows you to dine at your leisure and not hurry you along in order to turn the table quickly. read more

London is known for its not so good Chinese food. Orient London was actually not too bad at all though, to my surprise! Stopped in here for some dim sum and ordered the dishes we would normally get. Some of the the dishes were made a bit different but still, pretty solid. Their portion sizes are quite small. I wish that the "spicy black fungus" could have been spicy. It was not spicy at all. Very deceiving. The peppers they put in this dish were also not spicy. Also lacked the vinegar taste that is typically used to make this dish. Another dish that I think could have been better was the century egg & pork congee porridge. The porridge itself was a bit too thick for my liking. Kind of clumpy. Did not find much century egg in it nor pork either. It was quite bland too. I asked for salt, white pepper, & hoping they had fermented bean curd but they didn't. Did not end up finishing the porridge. My favorite was the charcoal lava buns & eel. Those two dishes had good flavor & found them both to be tasty. Dim sum was all right overall. Didn't have high expectations for Chinese food in London. So I think they're just okay, nothing crazy. read more

I really wanted to like this place. There was a queue outside so I figured this must be a good spot. It's directly underneath the Chinatown arch as well. I waited in line for about an hour or so which is fine- that's on me and they were busy. I was seating a little awkwardly right in the center of the space which again is fine, it's small and I was by myself so whatever works. Service was fine and what I expected for where I was. You order on a sheet of paper that's numbered which was easy enough. They have a $10 minimum so I added the prawn wraps to my order to try them out. Here's why I gave a low rating. All of the food was ok at best. It was all edible but none of it had any flavor, including the sauce with the prawn wrap. I was so extremely disappointed in the dumplings- they were dry as a bone. I expect at least a little bit of soup or broth on the inside but there wasn't any. Are there different varieties of dumplings that don't have any broth? Either way. They were so dry that they were hard to eat. Absolutely no flavor in the mushroom dumpling either. Definitely a fine place to go in a pinch and they have very good prices (this all totaled about $13) but I would not go again. read more

While vacationing in London, we were looking for a good Chinese restaurant for dinner, that had some old world traditional favorites on their menu. We all ordered individual dishes and the portions were beyond generous. The Sweet and Sour Prawns Cantonese style was very flavorful, Stirred fried filet with satay sauce, Sweet and Sour Chicken Cantonese style and Vegetable Fried Rice. All of our dishes had good flavor. The Service was attentive and prompt. The ambiance at Orient is nice, a little upscale feeling without being over the top. Would definitely recommend if your looking for good Chinese while in London. They have a menu sheet in ENG/CHI for you to order from if you know what you want. I found the staff really friendly and courteous, and accurate with time estimate. Food was hit or miss. Chinese food in the UK isn't great, but at least you get closer to decent in London (at a price). Of the dim sum I ordered to-go, I'd say about everything was 50/50 on whether or not it was good. In the least it was decent. Ones I liked most were the: siu mai, lotus wrapped chicken, cheung fun/rice roll. Their radish cake/lo baak gou was okay but was more flour than daikon. The skin on the haa gau was not right. It was more doughy cheung fun than that snappy, crystalized skin you want. The pork ribs was way bland with way too much sesame oil. Not good. Perhaps our experience was soured because we came here on Christmas and they charged a pound each for a glass of tap water, but this particular visit wasn't great. The crispy duck (Peking style) was quite good, but expensive (27 pounds for two pieces). The Singapore noodles were spicy and interesting but nothing to write home about. The Tofu wish shrimp and black bean sauce had an unexpected flavor but I can't say that it was particularly tasty. The lamb hot pot was pretty good although it was more like lamb stew. The mustard dressing that came alongside should be avoided. The hostess was funny and pleasant otherwise the service was curt but efficient. Also, the food was expensive for a Chinese restaurant (Christmas day could have been a factor here). Searching for a dim sum restaurant in London can be overwhelming due to the sheer number of options with relatively similar menus and prices. If this is you right now... look no further. My boyfriend and I chose this restaurant after reading many reviews. We came here at noon on a Wednesday and were seated right away (note, on weekdays it's very difficult to find a dim sum restaurant in china town that opens before noon). The restaurant is clean and the ambiance is modern. The location is easy to find as it is right at the entrance to china town. We ordered a handful of dishes, all LW of which met our expectations for a traditional dim sum. Though I will note we did not order the peaking duck so I can not speak to that. The bill ended up being around £50 for around 7 dishes and tea which seems reasonable but definitely not cheap. I would recommend! read more

Absolute WORST experience I have ever had in my life! I was staying as a guest at the hotel and they referred me to go to this restaurant. When I arrived I advised the hostess that I wanted tea before I decided on ordering food. So I told the first waitress I wanted tea and I wasn't ready to order. Then two minutes later I another women asked if I were ready to order. I responded again "I'm not ready to order just want to drink tea". I think another two minutes a man approached and stated "the tea is only for people who are ordering food". I was taken back as I explained again I wasn't feeling well and wanted to drink tea so he then asked me to leave. I asked if I could I told take the tea to go his response was "no" I am not sure why but I plan to let everyone know about my experience. My money is as good as anyone else so there is no reason to be refused service for drinking tea. If the policy stated that upon arriving or if the staff notified me of the policy immediately. Never go here or try sitting and ordering just tea and let me know how it goes. read more

Still a little greasy, but flavorful pork, airy taro, and lightly crisp edges. #2 Crystal king prawn dumplings with black truffle and XO Sauce - the truffle was nicely pronounced, but the XO had little seafood and was tough. The dumpling itself was nice and mild, though the skin was gummy. #23 Shu Mai - standard #10 Fried turnip cake with XO Sauce - same issue with the XO Sauce having little flavor.
