Dr Herbert was referred to me by an ER doctor, whom I had seen for a severe rash. Dr Herbert was able to see me within a week. She biopsied the rashes and gave me medication that helped the rash, which had become infected, to quickly improve. Unusually for a doctor these days, she also emailed me daily after the visit, including over the weekend, and personally called me with the biopsy results. I felt her caring was genuine and impressive. The only negative about the practice is that it does not accept insurance, but they will give you all the receipts you need to submit your own claims. If you are okay with that, you will receive knowledgeable and personal medical care. read more

I did not have a great experience with Dr. Herbert. I found her to be extremely rude and dishonest. She hanged up the phone on me while I was waiting at the pharmacy for her preauthorization . She said that it was her lunch hour. When I confronted her a week later during her follow up call , she then told me "I don't know what you are talking about". The woman at the front desk has a huge attitude problem. It was the first time I called because I read yelp reviews and was calling around looking for a place that was best for me. I was simply asking standard questions to see if I wanted to make an appointment and the whole time she was really short, she was sighing a lot and being really rude. She has a major attitude issue. Bottom line: The woman who answers the phone is the reason I went some where else. If she's reading this: good job! The point of your existence is to give people good customer service. If you are a new patient DO NOT see this doctor she's is no longer taking new patients. I made an appt. in July only to be told I could only be seen in Nov. Um a VERY long wait, but okay she came highly recommended and I didn't have any problems. So on Sept. 25th, I get a call from her office informing me that the office is no longer taking new patients. I was like excuse me, WTF, seriously, I've been on the books since July and you are just figuring this out! Get real, then if that was bad enough the person said yeah you were not scheduled property. Again WTF is that suppose to mean? Thanks you no good dermatologist office. YOU SUCK!!! I had a horrible experience with this dermatologist. I've been struggling emotionally and physically with painful acne that I suspect was from a couple bad facials that left me with a infection. However, the doctor said it was hormonal and was very quick to put me on Accutane and antibiotics. I asked for other solutions and she basically shot them down. Just left feeling rushed without any real solution. She maybe saw me for 5 min and even in room discussed to a nurse why another patient was still waiting-just felt very unprofessional. To me she wasn't very empathic to my situation. She literally said, "it's really bad" and made a face. Im thinking to myself, Of course it is, that's why I'm here! I've been a patient of hers for over a year and have never had a problem with prescriptions or appointments. She's forward and straight to the point, two qualities I expect in anyone I entrust my medical treatment to. I know Dr. Herbert is a busy doctor (aren't they all?). Clearly the few who've left a review have their issues...though one apparently hasn't even been treated by her, so not quite sure of the merit in their complaint. I really like Dr. Herbert. I initially saw her in 2010 at the recommendation of another Dr for a spot on my leg. I had a biopsy done and all was well. I would have gone back to her for an annual skin check but I hate Virginia Hospital Center parking and it can take a while to get an appointment with her... So I cheated on FDL and went somewhere else with free parking and not a long wait... That was a lesson in some good things are worth the wait.. The Dr. I saw instead did the worst skin check ever and butchered my husband for a mole removal. Needless to say I came running back!!! I saw Dr. Herbert again in October 2013 and she looked everywhere (I felt like I should have worked out more for the staring that was done at my naked self!!). She did a couple painless biopsies and I walked out feeling confident that she took the time and effort to make sure I am healthy and problem free. That alone was worth a 5 month wait and $5 parking! read more

Dr. Herbert has been my dermatologist for a number of years. The first time I saw her for a full body exam, she found a stage zero melanoma that my prior dermatolgist overlooked. I've been a steady patient ever since. She's super careful, understands the risks of skin cancer for me as a former lifeguard with lots of freckles to begin with. Over the years, we've developed a collaborative relationship which I really appreciate. She's always willing to fit me in and take care of new "bumps" and is super thorough on the full body exams. I feel well cared for with Dr. Herbert and highly recommend her to new patients. I should also note that Dr. Herbert has an excellent staff, many of whom are in training or waiting placement in nursing, physician assistant or medical school programs. Just got out of my first appointment with Dr. Herbert. I saw her for some minor acne on my cheeks. She was very nice, personable, and thorough, but at the same time very quick and efficient, which I definitely appreciated. I think I was in and out of there in 30 minutes, which is great! Hopefully the medicine she prescribed works, and I don't have to come back too often! I tend to stay away from doctors offices, especially dermatologists, but I am considering making an appointment to get a full skin check since my acne visit was so pleasant! I do agree with the sub-par reviews on the front office staff (and my reasoning for not giving 5 stars). They are very cold/short and didn't give me the warm fuzzies, which would be a nice touch, and really take this place to the next level. All it takes is a smile and a greeting. read more

So my girlfriend, being the loving, attentive, and [insert sweet adjective here] woman that she is grew concerned with the plethora of moles I acquired like treasures from the beach. Admittedly, seven years as a lifeguard and being an invincible teenager/young 20-something likely was a small contributor. Immediately she set off to find me a dermatologist - especially since I wouldn't do that myself. She made me make an appointment with Dr. Herbert, so I did. Dr. Herbert can be summed up in three words - friendly and efficient. Definitely something I want in a doctor. I'm not in to long conversations, lectures, or waiting. She saw me very quickly after I was handed my gown, looked at the moles, asked some questions, and then removed a few that she didn't like. I eventually came back for a full body exam to ensure things were documented and she found a few more, got them, and I was in and out in less than an hour. She's definitely one of the best in my book - I just wish she was a primary care doc as well so I could keep everything in one place! read more

My doctor suggested I get a mole checked out due to a family history of skin cancer, and making an appointment within GW's referral system was taking MONTHS, so I went to Dr. Herbert on a friend's recommendation. She checked out the mole at a consultation scheduled within a couple weeks of my initial call, told me right away that sucker was coming off, and scheduled me for an appointment on their next surgery date (I think they try to schedule surgical procedures on Fridays). Everything went totally smoothly. She was really nice to me and incredibly patient, especially considering I get a little nervous and weird about being poked and prodded at doctors' offices. I mean, no one gets excited about getting pieces of skin getting scraped off with a scalpel, but Dr. Herbert made it as pleasant as such a procedure can really be. My one frustration was an issue with their lab service. I keep getting a bill from the lab for something that should have been covered by insurance (the error was on the lab's end). I normally wouldn't factor that into my review of the doctor's office, but when I mentioned it to the front desk staff, they said it was a known issue with that lab. They gave me some tips on how to deal with it, but it was a huge pain in the butt involving many back-and-forth phone calls that I would have preferred to avoid. I think they've since switched to a different lab, which helps a bit. Bottom line: Dr. Herbert is great (and likes roller derby!), the staff is friendly and efficient, and I'm quite content to have found a dermatologist I like and trust. read more

Dr. Herbert is a fabulous, caring and wonderfully knowledgeable dermatologist. I have rarely had a doctor who was so invested in making sure I was OK. I came to see her for a checkup and mentioned a rash on my face which I thought was an allergic reaction. She said she thought it was shingles but had me go to my primary to confirm - and she called my primary when I was in the office - and then recommended I see an opthalmologist since it was close to my eye. She has called me several times a day since then to confirm I had set up my appointments and to find the results. She offered to help me get in to see an opthalmologist if I had any issues. Her staff are also wonderful. Jillian is a master at numbing skin for removal of spots and is very efficient is getting medical information. I would HIGHLY recommend Dr. Herbert and her team - not just because they are medical experts but also because they are very caring and kind. Dr. Herbert should get 10 stars!!! read more

Dr. Herbert is a clinician that is technically competent but lacks empathy and seems to be incapable of connecting with her patients. She treated my skin condition with barley a discussion with me. The procedure took a few mins and she shot out to her next appointment. Frankly, I felt like nothing more than a revenue generating body. Her procedure didn't work and she didn't treat the associated skin condition, both of which still plague me today. Don't let the hype of reputation be a reflection of quality for patient care. read more

She is unable to connect with her patients and she is rude!!!!! I dont think i have ever seen her smile, maybe she has some type of disorder but i was disappointed because i went a second time to give her a chance and she still sucked! She had no idea what i had and she also was unable to be professional . She spends 2 seconds with her patients. The first time i saw her she told me she had really bad reviews LOL i mean what dr does that? Then she recommended a friend of hers to remove dark spots that i had all over my face but after spending 2 seconds with me she never gave me the information to get the help i needed and i only got samples of lotion i can get at CVS pharmacy. I tried calling to get the number of the dr she recommended and never got it ! The second time i went because I thought it would be easier to use her than to find a new Darmatologist and i wanted to give her a second chance! But she did the same crap, spent 2 seconds with me and was very disconnected. I had a rash on my skin and she told me she didn't know what it was lol i get doctors are human and they dont know everything but you never tell a patient I DONT KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE !!!! You tell them ill look into that or something else! . But even though she didn't know what i had she told me she would sent a prescription to the pharmacy but never told me what medication she was given me lol. Then i called the pharmacy and the meds weren't even there and I know trying to get her to do something over the phone will be a nightmare and will never get done!!!!!! So i wont even bother, but i will call my insurance to let them know . I also told her i had another skin issue that was concerning and she again recommended someone she knew but AGAIN NEVER GAVE ME THE INFORMATION ! I had to literally ask for it to the receptionist. ALL she cares about is your money and your insurance!!!!! STAY AWAY FROM HER!!! SHE IS THE REASON WHY I CREATED A YELP ACCOUNT SO I CAN LET NEW PATIENTS KNOW HOW MUCH SHE SUCKS!!!!! Could not agree with R.B. in a previous review--took the words right out of my mouth. She has treated me for a skin condition numerous times and it still persists. She is rude and abrasive, she doesn't care about you, you are just a revenue-generating body to her. The front desk staff there seem to be lost too. I give Courtney ZERO stars. I scheduled appointments for my son and for myself. I arrived 12 minutes late and waited in the lobby and filled out reams of new paperwork for both of us. Then Courtney informed me through her receptionist that she had decided to cancel the appointment. She refused to see us and sent us home--even though we had raced to get there through afternoon traffic. I've never had a doctor cancel an appointment on me before for being a little late. I guess she is ok with her patients waiting for her--but she won't wait for patients. We'll be going elsewhere. read more

Dr Herbert is unprofessional and she constantly talked down to her staff while I was there, which made me very uncomfortable. I took my mom for her first appointment, and it was cancelled 5 minutes before the scheduled time while we were in the waiting room because the doctor had a "family emergency." We never finished my mom's second appointment. She told my mom that she looks too young for her age and refused any anti-aging advice or treatment. She rushed checking my mom's skin for sun damage and seemed unthorough. She continued to ramble on about unrelated topics, seemed very insecure about her own age and in competition with her patients. I saw Dr. Herbert one time a year or two ago after seeing that she was a "Best Doctor" in Washingtonian magazine. While I'm sure she's quite competent, her bedside manner is sorely lacking. I'm in the healthcare business, too, and I would never dream of treating a patient as she did. I was naked except for a gown, clearly expecting a new patient screen for skin cancer. She swept in the exam room imperiously with her entourage without greeting me or introducing herself. She then looked only at my face, as if I was fully dressed and was only there for an acne consult. I had to repeatedly "grab" her with questions to keep her from leaving, as she attempted to end the visit multiple times without ever learning anything about me or why I was there. The visit was maybe five minutes, max. I have never gone back nor would I recommend her. read more

Love love love Dr. Herbert! She wiped 10 years off my face with 2 shots of Botox and a Restalyne injection in my smile/frown line. No pain - and TOTALLY natural looking: no stunned "deer in the headlights" look - no Lisa Rinna Lips - no Nicole Kidman Plasma screen forehead. Her staff is efficient and engaging, and there is good follow-up after the procedure. She resolved it but was so concerned she gave me her personal cell phone number. When I didn't use it, she called me on a weekend to see if I was okay! I have fair skin and numerous moles and having a dermatologist who does a thorough exam is very important to me. I have never felt pressured to have a mole removed by her but always feel that she recommends removal when necessary. If I didn't have to give this one star I wouldn't. I called and made an appointment for later in the month. They called me today and said they could get me in due to a cancelation. When j had first made the appointment I made sure that they accepted my insurance company. I checked with Megan and my own insurance company. I was excited- I left work to go to the appointment. I get there not Megan another receptionist said they don't accept my health insurance. Megan didn't seem to care that I was even there and that she had informed me they took my insurance when I had made the appointment. So I called my insurance company while I was still there in the office and they had both dermatologists listed as ones I could go see and be covered. Megan spoke to my insurance company they went back and forth and Megan handed me the phone and basically said he doesn't know what he's doing it talking about. I continued talking to my insurance company he got me another dermatologist and I got an appointment there in a few weeks. I'm prompted to give Dr. Herbert a review because I just made an annual appointment with my new dermatologist. Dr. Herbert has stopped taking Medicare, most regrettably.; orherwise, I'd still be seeing her. I had the pleasure of seeing her for three years before changing. I always found it easy to make an appointment, first of all. When you're worrying about a skin issue, you don't want to have to wait months just to be seen! Her staff is very very friendly and most efficient. And Dr. Herbert herself is just wonderful. She is reassuring, thorough and knowledgeable. She's a terrific listener, which means so much as you deal with skin issues. She diagnosed a squamous cell cancer on my face...frightening to hear, but she followed that with a referral to an excellent Mose surgeon, and it was totally removed. I just can't say enough good things about Dr. Herbert. I've been to dermatologists before who were totally the opposite; one even diagnosed me while standing across the room! In all fairness, this review is about the staff working there, not specifically Dr. Herbert, I tried scheduling an appt recommended with her as recommended by my intenral medicine doctor. First, it took 24 hours for the staff to return my voicemail. Next, I was grilled about my insurance policies. I have two insurances - a primary and secondary -- both Blue Cross. The receptionist was most unhelpful and unknowledgeable about insurance at all. I was so annoyed that I ended the call abruptly. She may be a great doctor but the staff is impossible, ignorant and has a very poor sense of client service. read more

Dr. Courtney Herbert is as good as it gets for dermatology. Her office runs on time, she's extremely fast and thorough. It's never pleasant to get skin checked out and have moles removed, but she and her staff are quick. I ended up having to have a minor surgery to remove a mole and her referral was excellent. I would recommend her to anyone (and I have)! It's tough to get a full body appointment initially, but follow-ups are timely. Only downside is that the easiest parking is in the Green Lot at Virginia Hospital Center and it costs $5, but that's not a big deal. read more

Dr Herbert is clearly well qualified as a dermatologist but lacks adequate beside manner and rushes patients through with little to no information. I waited 6 months for my three children to get in when we moved to Virginia. They all suffer from terrible eczema and i was anxious to get them started with a regular dermatologist. The first experience was awful she booked all 3 in separate appointments but when we arrived took all in at the same time. Managed to get histories and crank us through in under 20 min for everyone! I thought this was just a busy day so after a year I brought back my daughter only for a full freckle exam. Had to wait 7 months to get her in because of the in depth nature of the exam. This time Dr Herbert and her team managed to get us through in under 15 min which even included removal of a suspicious freckle. The Dr just kept interrupting my questions with "we will call you" as we were rushed out. Not another patient in the office we were booked for an hour. What's the rush? In the end they even sent her prescription to the wrong pharmacy in spite of the history taker entering it right in front of us in our room. I don't think we will go back. Our copay alone costs more than 15 min of her time. She's just very rude and uncaring in spite of her excellent qualifications as a Dermatologist. read more

Just finished my follow-up appointment. The Dr. Herbert experience was a good one. The front desk staff was friendly and acknowledged my arrival quickly. Took my co-pay and I was quickly taken to a room. I would probably give more stars but I have psychological problems rewarding someone who has just cut and frozen me. Easy to make appointments and they come with a reminder call a few days ahead. I walk to the office so I can't comment on the parking. Very professional in all ways which I greatly appreciate.
