I've paid the price, through my taxes, while the developer sued the town. I will pay the price when Whole Foods moves out of town. So I admit that I start with a sour taste in my mouth. The reality is - this monstrosity has been built. So I should frequent it. Otherwise it becomes another abandoned shopping plaza. Which will blight our town and further increase my taxes. I finally have figured out why I don't frequent this place. It's because there is no where to go there. There are so many stop and shops, Panera, Bertuccis's, liquor stores, subway, Joe banks around. Most are bigger, better and closer to my house. I tried to do my last minute Christmas shopping- but the store choice is limited. What can you buy a 3 year old at Joe banks, ace hardware or a mattress store? Considering half of Wayland is closer to the golden triangle, and the other half is equidistant to try 20 Sudbury- I don't know the purpose of this half arsed mall of miniature versions of ubiquitous chain stores.

The Rainbow Swash belongs in this group. Those big colorful gas tanks south of Boston are a massive public artwork painted on a liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tank in the Dorchester neighborhood. The design features sweeping rainbow-colored brushstrokes. It was created in 1971 by artist and former nun Corita Kent, commissioned by the Boston Gas Company. At 140 feet tall, it was once considered the largest copyrighted artwork in the world. You can spot the Rainbow Swash easily from Interstate 93 south of the city or from an aircraft window if you're fortunate to be landing from the south/southwest into Runway 4R. Though the original tank was demolished in 1992, the design was faithfully recreated on the adjacent tank, keeping the tradition alive. The tank sits on private property operated by National Grid, within a fenced-off industrial site near the Dorchester waterfront. There's no public access to the tank itself, and security is tight. It is, after all, full of liquified natural gas. Morrissey Boulevard offers a drive-by view, especially heading northbound. It's probably the most direct public-facing angle. The building originally stood in Sterling Massachusetts. It was moved by Automobile Kingpin Henry Ford in 1927. When you talk about Old School this is the Original Old School! There are Plaques on the rocks outside that give you more information about the nursery rhyme. The Schoolhouse itself is open weekends only from May- October on Friday Saturday & Sunday from 12- 4:45 PM & is FREE! The Blackstone River and Valley is where the industrial revolution was born in America. Toward the middle of the park you will find The River Bend Farm Visitor Center with access to canoeing, fishing, trails, and snowmobiling or cross-country skiing. If you walk southerly on the beautiful canal walkway, you arrive at the historic Stanley Woolen Mill, currently being redeveloped into offices and shops. The Stanley Woolen Mill is the common name applied to a defunct company based in southeastern Massachusetts and to the company's buildings. The Stanley Woolen Mill is the centerpiece of the Central Woolen Mills District which is part of the National Historic Register. There is a plaque at the end of the canal walkway which provides historical information about the mill. The mill is made of wood and brick, and is an interesting, though hardly spectacular structure. That said, there are some very cool views from the canal bridge, and great walking, canoeing and biking trails in the park. There is a public parking lot if you want to begin your hike here, a nice antique shop in the mill, and you can catch bass and carp in the canal here or near the visitor center.

They renovated and created a beautiful commercial kitchen space and were awarded grant money to make it into a Food Hub to be used for processing local food and creating new ways for local food to make it to consumers. Instead they have suddenly forced young businesses to find new kitchen space and demanded that the kitchen space be used solely for their events, which only are a day or two per week. The Trustees need to decide if they want to fully engage and be a part of the local food movement or merely use the concept to win grant money.

I lived here a long time ago, from 1997-2002, when it was still a neighborhood in transition courtesy of the Big Dig and fluctuations in the real estate market from the tech bubble. I ended up here by accident because I couldn't get a place in Brookline. It ended up being a blessing. At the time, Southie was still considered a primarily Irish neighborhood that had railroad apartments, some large apartment buildings that were subsidized housing, and some private houses. It was within walking distance to downtown and I often did just that when weather permitted. I worked in the financial district near Filene's (when it used to be there), and it would take me about 20 minutes depending on the construction. My route would often change due to the Big Dig. It was fascinating to watch the various ravines that would be uncovered. When the weather was bad, I had the option of the red line and it was two stops away from South Station. My South Boston was the one that you saw in the movie, "Good Will Hunting"; a low income Irish neighborhood where I was often awakened by residents screaming for their spouses to let them in after a night of imbibing too much. I also had my car defaced by my next door neighbor's child who treated the hood like an easel with a rock. Some cab drivers also didn't want to go there because they were afraid of how they would be treated. Yes, there were downsides to living there but there were some other upsides. For one, I felt as though I had a true "Boston" experience. There was a small sense of community there, and many in the area knew each other. When renting my apartment, they didn't even do a credit check because my last name had an apostrophe and my landlord presumed I was from the area (I wasn't.) You would often see people gathering on stoops to talk to each other. It was also very convenient to the airport and 93, less than 5 minutes by car. There were several good restaurants in the area. Everyone has since discovered these advantages and it is amazing that no one didn't do so sooner, especially with Boston's booming housing market. I am glad that I lived there when I did before it was converted into a generic nabe like so many other parts of the city. I see that the place where I lived has since been converted from rentals into condos. I presume my old landlord has settled into retirement nicely and hope that she has. (I have been fortunate in my life to have wonderful landlords. She is a wonderful person and glad to see that she did well.) When I last visited a year ago, I did see that a couple of the local taverns are still there and hope that they hold out against gastropubs.

What do I say, my in-laws live here. It's not the same South Boston I grew up with. They had turned the entire single family house to condos and now it is even worse to find parking, instead of double parking you have to triple park your car. It still so conveniently located to Boston Proper with a quick bus ride, on getting on the Red line or taking a cab. It still has Castle Island for a nice walk along the Sugar Bowl in the summer or getting something to eat at Sullivan's too. I just hate coming here for the St. Patrick's Day parade as it is all College students drunk as can be. But it is what it is.
