Located right smack dab in the middle of The Taste of Cincinnati festival/Findlay Market, this stunning statue is an art deco beauty that is clean of bird poop and appears well-maintained. It doesn't really mean anything though - it's a sponsored statue "graciously" donated by the P&G headquarters building across the street. It is 48 feet tall with a 6 foot spire on top and was built in 2021. To quote Sister Michael in the tv show, Derry Girls, "I do enjoy a good statue, it has to be said."

The fountain is sponsored by Procter & Gamble, which of course makes sense as it stands right next to their corporate headquarters building. And other than a plaque giving them credit for their "generous support," there is little information. The fountain looks a little Art Deco. The downtown area of Mariemont is super charming with the german architecture and cute businesses. National Exemplar is always a safe choice when you're in the neighborhood. No matter what strikes your fancy, you're probably within a five minute drive of what you're looking for. If you're in Mariemont you're also sitting in between 50 West Brewing and Karrikin Spirits, a tough choice with no wrong answer! Mariemont Theater is a great place to stop by if you're looking for some great independent and foreign films. The streets of Mariemont always feel safe and welcoming, and the locals kind and inviting. Mariemont is a great community full of awesome local businesses.

The Betts House is a small museum tucked away in the West End, just off of Central Avenue. Clark…read moreStreet looks like it is miles away from Downtown Cincinnati, with its Italianate houses and gigantic canopy of oak trees. This part of town looks like it's straight out of a New England movie, with historic houses to boot. The Betts House is the oldest house in Cincinnati and Ohio, erected in 1804, just one year after Ohio became a state. The Betts family originally owned several blocks of land on the West End, but as generations passed, Cincinnati expanded and plots of land were split. Surprisingly, when the Betts lived here, the West End was considered rural. Just two stories tall and consisting of eight rooms, the house chronicles the history of the Betts family and the evolution of the West End in the permanent upstairs exhibit. Downstairs features a rotating exhibit, currently which is about the New Madrid Earthquake in 1811. The earthquake was felt here in Cincinnati and caused extensive damage to the Betts' kitchen. Sounds pretty cool, so why only three stars? During my visit, a mother brought her toddler to visit one of the docents. Their conversation could be heard loudly throughout the house, even when I was on the second floor and they were downstairs. The toddler was screaming and crawling all over the place. The docent didn't seem to mind that she was getting weird looks from myself and a few of the other guests. That being said, please do not bring children to the Betts House. It's a museum for adults or mature youth. Most of the exhibit features text and diagrams which are much too complex for anyone under age 10. Also, since there is a lot of reading, excessive noise and talking disturbs other patrons. Lastly, when I went upstairs to view the Betts Family exhibit, the room featured a few posterboards propped up on the floor. They weren't on stands or affixed to the wall like a normal museum. I actually had to kneel to read the end of the paragraphs. As a historical landmark, the Betts House is worth a look. The presentation at the museum, on the other hand, I could go either way. Cost per person: $2.00 Viewing Time: 1 hour Tips: - Ample, free street parking - Not handicapped accessible, as it is preserved as a historic house. - Check out the neighboring house with a placard, where the Gamble Family once resided.

Did you know Cincinnati is home to the World's Largest Unfinished Subway System?…read more In 1916, Cincinnatians had a dream: to relieve traffic congestion and improve health concerns by creating a rapid transit system underneath present day Central Parkway. Originally part of the Miami-Erie Canal, the unused waterway was drained, dug out by horse-and-plow, then filled in with concrete. The plan was to create a 16-mile loop of mass transit around the city, stretching from Race Street at Central Parkway, to Clifton, Norwood, Oakley, then back Downtown. The project progressed for ten years then came to a halt after a change in political leaders and financial troubles. The completed portion included six stations along a route spanning from Downtown to Norwood. In 1928, the Cincinnati Subway project was officially abandoned. Over the years, people tried to revive the subway system as well as proposing other uses for it, such as: a wine cellar, a mushroom farm, an aeronautic wind tunnel, and an entertainment venue similar to Underground Atlanta. The Cincinnati Subway is still in tact today. Two miles of tunnels are located underneath Central Parkway between Race Street to just north of the Western Hills Viaduct. Three of the stations remain; the other three were demolished in the 1950s to make way for I-75. While the concrete structure is complete, no rails, electricity, or trains were ever installed. The structure itself is in good condition, especially for being almost 100 years old. While it is off-limits to the public, Cincinnati Museum Center gives an annual tour of the subway in May; an excellent opportunity to go exploring in our city's deepest secret. The tunnels have the potential to be used for modern-day rail transit, with a few improvements, of course.

As I found myself at the Pleasant Ridge Branch Library, I thought I was at the Northside Branch…read moreagain. While the two don't look that much alike, I could tell the Pleasant Ridge Branch was close in age to the other (current site opened in 1929), it had the same general rectangular shape, and it had the same brick exterior. Inside it was smaller, but it still reminded me of a mini version of the former Cumminville Branch in Northside. No matter how old a Cincinnati Public Library branch is, they all keep up with the times and have large DVD selections. At Pleasant Ridge, it was no different as there were a ton of movies and also many popular TV shows now on DVD. I also saw lots of magazines and a small selection of newspapers on top of the many books. There was more or less a left and right side to the check out area, but it was essentially all one big room. On one side there was a large children's/teen section, and there were several computers too (a few on the other side). I read online that the library has a "collection of material about the history of the community," and one thing that actually caught my eye while at the library was an upcoming event called "Professional baseball players live among us." In the display case near the door it said that on August 11th, six former pro baseball players (some Major League, some Negro Leagues, some both) will be at the branch to meet with library-goers and to sign autographs. One of those players will be Chuck Harmon, the first African-American to play for the Cincinnati Reds, while Leo Cardenas (Reds), Bill Schlesinger (Red Sox), and Charlie "Whip" Davis (Memphis Red Sox) are a few of the other former ball players expected to be on hand. A program like that is very cool in itself, but also special for those in the area. Just last week they even had the UC mascot stop in. Overall the Pleasant Branch Library isn't that great but it's organized and does have a pair of meeting areas that fit 10 and 100 people. The best thing is the historical material about the community, as well as the related programs they hold like the upcoming baseball one.

I never know what I will find on the shelves, but there is almost always at least a small pile of books interesting enough to take home. On my most recent visit, I happened upon Rabbit, Run, the first in John Updike's series, and Saturday, by Ian McKewen, as well as Fire Sermon, my Jamie Quatro. All were excellent. As is true of all branch libraries, any Cincinnati Public Library holding will be sent to the Pleasant Ridge branch at a patron's request. The library also offers interesting one-time programs for children and adults as well as programs that involve a series of classes. And, the staff is consistently helpful. The Pleasant Ridge library may not be physically impressive, but it will serve your needs. Several years ago neighborhood residents got together to paint the library themselves when the library could not get funds to have it done. That says a lot about the library's value to its patrons. Being from Lousiville and at the tip of Kentucky off you travel anywhere else you pretty much drive through the entire state of Kentucky. I can say this interstate 71 roadside attraction is my favorite one to see when driving through the state. Coming from Lousiville it lets me know I am getting very close to the Cincinnati Ohio border and also is a beacon for places to eat and shop as it is located at the foot of a mall entrance. Overall very cool and fun tower. I love how it plays on the southern charm by infiltrating the word "yall".

And it's always a fun little thing to say hey look it's Florence y'all that's kind of a gimmick in the city of Florence. They even name their baseball team for y'all's . There are arrows on the floor to direct you in the right directions, good signage too. I was in and out in like 10 minutes, again this was a rainy mid-week afternoon, but it was very efficient, and I'd highly suggest it as soon as you can. Covid is second waving, and who knows if they'll change the rules between now and Election Day. Go early! VOTE VOTE VOTE!
