The Cow and Calf Restaurant was lovely and had lovely food. The waitress was very nice and attentive! The food was super delicious and left us full but wanting more. I revisited the Cow and Calf today, under more chillier climates, and again I am pleased to say I wasn't disappointed. Normally as I previously stated I prefer to be outside, gawping out over the Cow and Calf rocks or at the very least looking out over some sort of greenery, but when it's all foggy and grim there's not much to look at except my own goosebumps brrr. Stepping inside the doors of the Cow and Calf was like being given a right big cuddle by your mum. It was lovely. It was so warm and welcoming. Like the physical representation of those Ready Brek adverts from years ago. We hit the bar and opted for a low level sloppy leather sofa, stripped ourselves down of our cold weather gear, and got all red faced and dopey eyed in the lovely warmth of the fab little pub. Being a Saturday night was something of a novelty too, there was a strange mix of regulars, trendy young couples, and families, all in harmony enjoying a drink and a meal, or one or the other, there was even one man and his dog, classic. The winter warmer menu was just as tasty as the summer offering, and I'm happy to report that in all climates Cow and Calf delivers. read more

Out in what I would call 'the sticks' (being a city girl), lies the Cow and Calf Hotel. It is next to the Cow and Calf Rocks, a popular walking spot in Ilkley and so often plays host to hungry people looking for shelter, food and booze after a trek. Or people looking to stay in the beautiful country area for a few days or so. The Cow and Calf is not just a hotel but also a pub restaurant. They have an open fire and some gorgeous lunch time specials to warm you up in the cold winter months, including vegetarian options. It's traditional outside and interior decor, with lovely country views of the moors, makes you feel like you're playing in a remake of a Bronte novel. Mmmm... yum.... Just thinking of this place makes me hungry!! I have been lots of times before, but my most recent visit was on Saturday. Me and my boyfriend took a casual jaunt to the countryside for a spot of lunch. I had steak, he had Moroccan nut roast. For dessert (oo- naughty!!) I had creme brulee and he had apple pie. Could not fault the food or service. Staff were friendly and efficient to say it was so busy, and the seating is cosy and warm. Also good for drinks, with lots to choose from including some interesting looking ales. The Cow and Calf is especially nice on a summers day when you can sit outside, but be warned, it does get busy, so pre book if you can. All in all a good experience and I will be back! read more

The food in the restaurant was fine - certainly better than average. A good range of beers which are well kept and poured. Amazingly wonderful views from the restaurant and bar area... In short, the pub and bar are great. But only two stars for the hotel. Go to the Cow & Calf website to book a room and see the beautiful photos of rooms with big windows. What they fail to mention is that the rooms do not always have wonderful views. So, what if all you get to see is the car park? But the room we were given didn't even have a view of the car park, it didn't have any view at all -- it had no windows! True a couple of sky lights, but I can see the sky from anywhere in the world. I don't need to pay a large rent to get one of the best views in the country only to be told that the only view available was of two small squares of sky. Of course I complained. But no one wanted to listen and no one could do anything to help. The first night, a Saturday, the hotel was full - there were no other rooms available, but the next night, the Sunday, there were few residents and plenty of rooms we could have been move to. But no, no one wanted to listen, no one wanted to help. it's a beautiful hotel in a fabulous location, but if you want to stay there with something more than sky to view, you better check very carefully with the management. read more

The Cow & Calf is the perfect place to go on a hazy sunday afternoon. It has beautiful views over the Cow & Calf rocks and you can literally see for miles and miles. I used to visit here a lot with my uni friends when we were pretending to have a 'working lunch.' If working lunch means enjoying a few glasses of wine and a gorgeous huge dinner over a couple of hours then we were bang on target. I was first introduced to the cow and calf by a friend on a cold cold december. The Pub was warm, welcoming, had great food and a lovely warm mulled wine in the pot. You can either sit inside the tradtional style pub - full of locals who are always ready for a chat. Or outside in the patio area overlooking the landscape. Even better is that the cow and calf is also a guest house so you could even book a room there if you are a fan of walking holidays. Lovely place, great prices. Even better views. read more

Came here with some friends before a walk across the moor opposite. Stunning views, lovely staff and a great pint. Walkers and ramblers are welcome - there's a great patio/beer garden set infront of the pub with plenty of spaces to sit in the sun (although when the breeze picks up it is bracing)! I am a huge fan of Ilkley's Cow and Calf rocks, therefore a plush and sophisticated pub and restaurant located handily so you can sit in awe of Yorkshire beauty is superb! The Cow and Calf is one of England's finest views in my opinion. I love it for walking my pooch but many of my friends go up there on a sunday for some air and to enjoy the view from the top or in most of my friends cases, to have a drink at the pub! What I love most about the Cow and Calf is the size and sophistication of its outdoor patio area. Stainless steel tables and chairs are paced on a huge stoned patio. In the summer it is perfect just sat here with a glass of wine looking around at the view. If wine isn't you thing you can get a pint of "Black Sheep"; a Yorkshire specialty. It isn't just me that clocked onto Cow & Calf's fun, it is a very popular. On a summer Friday night it is near impossible to find a table, and on a Sunday the same applies. Nevertheless at other times it can be quite calm and relaxing. If you have some time on your hands and fancy a drink out with your friends somewhere a little more scenic than the city center, you know where to go. If it's food you are after, Cow & Calf serves up pub classics with a little more sophistication than most public houses for around £7-£10 a meal. read more

Went for Sunday lunch a few weeks ago and it was ok but I have been to far better places in the Ilkley area and it is definitely not cheap. It does have one of the best views in the Wharfe Valley though. Won't be rushing back any time soon. read more

It is the situation of this Pub/hotel that really sells it. The views are breath taking across the Valley with the Cow and Calf Rocks standing guard close by. Wonderful food and beer, a warm atmosphere, but inside I do feel you need to be a little bit better dressed than walking boots etc., However, the staff are warm and welcoming whatever your attire. We love to sit outside, where there are loads of tables, after a walk on the moors and have a lovely drink and something warm and heartening to eat. I cannot fault the food and there is plenty of choice. Well worth a vist if only for the views! read more

Oh, how I love the Cow and Calf! Its setting is spectacular, situated on Ilkley Moor, so the views are fab and you have the feeling of being up in the Moors, but with the comfort of a very cosy pub/hotel. I have eaten here many times. The food is standard 'Vintage Inn' fayre, so if you've been to another from this chain, you will know what to expect. However, it is the setting that is really spectacular and it's a great base to explore the moors from. I have also stayed in the hotel on 3 occasions and some of the rooms are really good, large rooms with amazing views. However, the rooms at the back don't have the views and are the same price, so if your're going, it's worth asking in advance for one of the front-facing rooms. I would definitely recommend this for eating, drinking and staying. read more

The drink selection is decent too, with a surprisingly extensive wine list that's welcome when you're choosing from the more restaurant-quality end of the menu, but it's really the views and the homely atmosphere that keep punters coming back again and again. If there was a negative star, I would choose it. When this place is busy, especially when the weather is delightful and everyone chooses to sit out, the service is very slow, food order is never right and they don't take responsibility that it's their fault and offer some type of compensation to appease their unhappy customers. We visited for a meal. The location is amazing however thats the only plus point I could find. The menu looked fab but when the food arrived it was average and therefore quite disappointing. The staff were very rude and completely lacked social skills, quite an important element in a pub. This therefore lead to a poor atmosphere which made us feel uncomfortable. We were visitors to the area and I will not be making a return visit nor will I be recommending it. If you want to enjoy ilkley moor take a picnic and sit outside!! read more

Walked in from a hike on the moor, and I felt out of place; it is not really a watering hole for walkers, as it's all too upmarket, beer was good, (Taylors or Black Sheep) but not at £2.80 a pint. Food was doing a roaring trade, with a half hour wait, on a Wednesday night. When I was there, a chap landed his helicopter in the field and went in for a meal! read more

Walked down from the ridge on the off chance of a decent pint. Six ales on, what a nice surprise, particularly as one of them was a great favourite of mine. Then we saw the Sunday roast come out and thought - why not? Pretty decent they were too. The staff seemed happy enough - must be my winning smile! A good port of call. read more

amazing location and great building but spoilt by mis-mash of furniture in dining section. Doubtful if more than 2 chairs matched. Meals were not good. the gammon was so salty it was bordering on inedible although it was a nice piece of meat so a great shame they didn't de-salt it first. The worst part was the pool of grease underneath the gammon that swum around the plate. Why on earth do they not drain the fat away on some kitchen towel before serving. The other guests were very unimpressed with theirs. One had the chicken half which was served on such a small plate it was impossible to cut the meat away without 99% of the meal shooting onto the table. The chicken must have been a very odd shape to begin with as it appeared all sinewy leg and very little breast. I think whoever is the manager is not doing a very good job to allow so many bad reviews and they need to up their game as we shan't be returning and I guess neither will a lot more people. read more
