This historical marker commemorates and celebrates the location of Georgia's only surviving rock…read morebarn. Built in 1906 by Augustus "Gus" Coggins. The marker reads as the following: Crescent Farm Rock Barn The Crescent Farm Rock Barn was constructed in 1906 by Augustus "Gus" Lee Coggins. One of a rare number of rock barns constructed in Georgia, the Rock Barn, together with the nearby Georgian Revival style main house, constitutes the core of the original Crescent Farm. Originally a racehorse stable, the rock barn was one of three barns on Coggins' cotton and horse farm. It was built to replace a wooden barn destroyed in a fire which killed valuable race horses. The Rock Barn is made of rock quarried on the original farm from the banks of the Etowah River. Coggins bred and raised horses for harness racing. Crescent Farm was widely known in the racing circle because of Abbedale, its world class horse. Abbedale brought fame to Crescent Farm and is listed in the Harness Racing Hall of Fame in Goshen, NY. The Concord Covered Bridge was originally built in 1872 and replaces an original bridge built in…read morethe 1840s that was destroyed during the Civil War. The bridge is still in active use today as a one-lane bridge. It has a maximum height requirement and there are signs with warnings on the way to the bridge. I didn't try to drive it with my 10' 6" RV of course, but it was nice that I could at least get close enough that I didn't have a long walk. There is minimal parking near the bridge. The historical marker nearby points out that "The Concord Covered Bridge has the distinction of being the only covered bridge still in use on a public highway in the metropolitan Atlanta area." The drivers I saw utilizing it seemed polite enough to wait for traffic. There is no pedestrian lane inside the bridge, so I simply jogged behind the last car in each direction to cross. The bridge is a Queenpost design. The interior is unlit and it seems to have been reinforced extensively with steel girders that should keep it going for a while longer. If you have ever travelled between Smyrna and Mableton there is a chance that you pulled up to this interesting, single-lane and somewhat sketchy wooden bridge that crosses Nickajack Creek. If you are coming from the Smyrna side of the bridge, which I consider to be the side with South Cobb, then you have to cross another single lane bridge. This bridge is not historic and is just as "functional", it sits near the Historic District/Silver Comet Trail entry point that features a small parking lot and covered pavilion. On both sides of the bridge, you must go under the hanging beams which are there to test the height of your vehicle and deter larger vehicles from attempting the bridge...so if you hit the beams, you will hit the large steel beams that are there now to protect the actual bridge. Seeing the bridge on foot is quite tough, as there are no sidewalks leading to it on either side and really the only safe way to walk is to take one of the nature trails that are off the Silver Comet trail to get as close as possible. The trail I speak of ends at the property line of the house next to the bridge and opens up at the end onto Concord and at the base of the bridge. While the history is fascinating, the functionality has become less enthralling as the population grows in the area and the use grows. Majority of folks know how to use the bridge, it is basically like a stop sign. You stop at the base of the bridge to make sure it is clear then you go, if there is another car on the other end, then you alternate sides...however, folks are impatient so sometimes you will just see a line of cars pile through causing the line on the other side to build up. Folks, I tell ya! Overall, the bridge is cool part of the Cobb County history. I am glad that they have updated and upgraded along with reinforced it throughout the years. I will say that lights on the inside could be helpful for those dark nights though...just a thought Cobb County!

This historical marker sits in front of a private house (Rober McAfee's House) off of Bells Ferry…read moreand Barrett Parkway in Marietta. It's across the street from the Bells Ferry Elementary School. Nearby businesses includes a CVS and a Publix Grocery Store. There is no parking around the area unless you park in the shopping strip behind the house and walk around to it. The historical marker explains how it was the battle of Nooday Creek;(part of Sherman's march to the sea campaign ) where parts of it was fought on Bells Ferry that caused Robert McAfee's house to be used as headquarters for the Union troops during the Civil war. The marker reads as the following: After the seizure of Big Shanty (Kennesaw) by Sherman´s forces, June 9, 1864, Brig. Gen. Kenner Garrard´s cav. div. [US] was posted on the left flank during operations on the Kennesaw Mountain front. Garrard´s cav. guarded Noonday Creek valley from Woodstock to the left of the 17th A. C. (in the rugged Brushy Mtn. area), with patrols on the Canton, Bell´s Ferry & Alabama roads. Daily conflict with his opponent -- Maj. Gen. Joseph Wheeler´s Cavalry [CS] -- marked the period from June 11 to July 3. The building is listed on the National Registry of Historical places and was restored to its original glory in 1997. The property where the Church is on cost by then $70 which in today's dollar is about $1,800. Today it's a museum an tells the story of some of the area's earliest African American pioneers. The sign reads: OLD ZION HERITAGE MUSEUM Zion Baptist Church was organized in 1866 by 88 former slaves who left First Baptist Church. The first worship place was a brush arbor. Next a small wooden structure was built which was destroyed by fire. In 1888, the present structure was built. Original early 20th century pews are still used. I really like this bridge…read more When I'm walking in the area, I almost always take the stairs up to the bridge and enjoy the views of Acworth. I think it is a good looking bridge and adds a nice element to the city. From the bridge you can get a nice view of Historic Acworth & Main Street. I believe the bridge was built for safety. So that pedestrians can safely cross the train tracks, especially if/when freight trains stop in the area. Now instead of being tempted to slip in between train cars to cross the tracks, there is an easy & safe alternate route. The grand opening of this bridge was held on October 3, 2019 at 8pm.

This very exciting, useful review is for the 14th Street Bridge in Midtown Atlanta. As someone who…read morehas lived in Midtown for almost 20 years, first on 10th Street and then on 17th Street, the 14th Street Bridge has been a regular part of my day-to-day life in the city. You can consider this a companion piece to my equally exciting and useful review of the 17th Street Bridge: https://www.yelp.com/biz/17th-street-bridge-atlanta. I moved to Midtown in 2000. The old 14th Street Bridge, which was constructed in 1984, was taken down in 2008. The new and current bridge opened on September 3, 2009. It took over a year to build the new bridge and it opened ahead of schedule. I barely remember the disruption. This bridge is newer than the 17th Street Bridge which opened in 2004. The bridge spans east-west over 15+ lanes of the Downtown Connector (I-75 and I-85). The new bridge is an improvement over the old bridge in every way. The biggest improvement has been to traffic flow. The bridge is longer and wider than the old bridge. It's got three vehicular lanes in either direction with two dedicated turn lanes (the old bridge didn't have dedicated turn lanes). There's an elevated median with decent landscaping and spacious, equally wide sidewalks on either side with lampposts and waste receptacles; no benches though. The bridge's fencing is green with an artistic cutout design. My favorite features are the lighted columns on either end of the bridge. At night, they change colors and it looks cool. So, the 14th Street Bridge is a lot more aesthetically appealing than the fairly plain yet functional 17th Street Bridge. The entire 14th Street Bridge project actually took several years and extended multiple blocks in either direction from the bridge. 14th Street was widened and made to look nicer with trees, bushes, and other landscaping. This displaced a lot of businesses. A couple businesses I distinctly remember being affected were Tamarind (Thai restaurant), just east of the bridge, and Wolf Camera, just west. Tamarind moved down the road to Colony Square where it reopened as Tamarind Seed. There also used to be a CVS and Office Depot at the corner of 14th and Techwood where the storage facility is now. I don't remember if those two businesses left as a direct result of the project or not. The old Silver Skillet diner, which opened in 1956, survived and still lives on to this day. The mill produced all sorts of textiles and yarns. The bridge is a much more modern addition, built by the Vickery Creek Unit of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, to join Old Mill Park to six miles of hiking trails. The bridge is pedestrian only and on the far side are staircases that go both down to the creek side and up to the hiking trails. While the mill side of the bridge is handicapped access (though the slope may be a challenge for wheelchair users to climb) and the bridge is smooth, the far side is absolutely not paved or even. Recently the government of city officials closed down all water access and boarded up the waterfall with a gate preventing anyone from coming in and there's also police station all around the park. If you ask me, someone has died over there or the water is contaminated with a disease and they are trying to prevent everyone from entering, and I have been coming here for one year constantly and it has never got this bad. If you are looking for a place to relax and not be bothered or you want to just simply be by water do not go here. It's a lot of more natural places around Atlanta also.
