If you're a Civil War history lover you absolutely can't miss this amazing battlefield remnant…read moretucked away in a quiet Georgia corner less than an hour from the Kennesaw Battlefield National Park. If you're vising the Etowah Indian Mounds, the battlefield is 15 minutes away so you should definitely lump the two sites together. This historic site is a stop on Georgia's Civil War History Trail but you can definitely tell it's a bit uncared for by the state - which is a shame. I'll be honest-I'd never heard of this particular battle until visiting the site, but the gravity of what happened on these grounds hits you like a ton of bricks as you read the historical markers and signs throughout the site. Lasting only 5 hours, this battle had one of the highest casualty rates of the Civil War - surpassing even that of Gettysburg. Today, the earthworks and trenches are well preserved, and interpretive signs tell the battle's bloody story. You can climb up a set of stairs and follow a short trail to reach the top of the Star Fort and gaze upon the massive forts that separated Union and Confederate soldiers. There is no admission to enter the park and it's grounds are open from dawn until dusk. *As an interesting side note - as you look at images of what the battlefield looked like during the Civil War you'll notice an image of an old two-story farm house to the left of the site. After looking at the historic sign and gazing around at its modern day match I quickly realized the house is still standing! My mom, sister, and myself happened to notice someone in the yard and took the chance to go over and inquire if in fact it was the SAME house. Lo and behold it was the current home owner and it's one and the same. The Union soldiers used the home as their headquarters during their time occupying the area. After the battle, the home served as a hospital for both Union and Confederate soldiers alike and it was for this reason the home was not burned when Union soldiers vacated the area. Talking to her provided so much supplemental info on the battle that truly enhanced our visit. Don't miss this site during your visits to the area!

The town was one of the stops on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad line. It is also marble rich and provided marble that built the Minnesota State capitol in the early 20th century. This beautiful city hall is not just a government building but also has a scenic gardens with nature trails around the place. The area is popular with the locals and at any given time there are people there walking their pets and or people taking leisurely walks....and because it's a small town you can bet the folks that work here are friendly too... its a nice change of pace....

THE WILD WILD WEST!…read more Since we were in the area, we decided to check out the Historic Downtown District of Acworth. Upon arrival, I realize that we are just in time for the classic cruise event which takes place approximately five times per year. The proceeds, (from participant registration), are used to support a local charity. These events are perfect for the classic car and truck enthusiast because there was an exceptional turnout of presenters and such a variety of vehicles. Historic Downtown Acworth was the perfect venue for hosting the cruise due to the cool nostalgic vibe from the train that runs along Main Street and the varied shops and restaurants housed in original restored buildings. It was really like taking a step back in time. The weather was great and everyone seemed to be having a great time. The downtown events are a great opportunity to bring residents together and welcome new visitors to the city. The city will be hosting A Taste of Acworth on Oct 17th from 10am until 6pm, so mark your calendars as this is sure to be a very popular event!

Marietta Confederate Cemetery…read more This cemetery was absolutely beautiful and taken care of. So many stories and monuments. We were very impressed! Marietta hosts both a national cemetery and a Confederate cemetery. The national cemetery contains around 10,000 Union soldiers, only 7,045 of whom are known, who died during the Atlanta campaign. The Confederate cemetery, established in 1863, is the largest of its kind in the state. It holds 3,000 soldiers who died in local hospitals, in combat during the Battle of Chickamauga or the Atlanta campaign, or in an 1863 train wreck that occurred north of Marietta. The separate cemeteries in Marietta were created because local civilians objected to enemies lying together in death. A prominent Marietta businessman, Henry Green Cole, sought a combined Confederate and Union cemetery, and donated land toward the project. When local officials objected, Cole gave the land to the federal government to be used for the burial of Union casualties only, and it was designated as such in 1866.

The trail of tears actually begins in Cherokee county about 2 miles from where the gold mine is located. The gold mines were worked on originally by the Cherokee Indians themselves near a town the called Sixes...Probably named after the 6 gold mines. Then after they were forced off their lands a lottery system was put in place giving the lucky winner 40 acres of land for them to do as they chose.It came to be known as Gold lottery of 1832. The marker itself reads as the following: Cherokee County, located along Georgia's gold belt, figured prominently in the gold rush of the 1830's and 40's. Several mines operated along a five mile area near the Etowah River in the northeastern part of the county, including the Franklin-Creighton, Sandow, and latham mines. More than 30 other small placer mines extended southwesterly across the county and included the Sixes Mine, worked earlier by the Cherokees. After the 1860's, most gold mining operations in the county either slowed or ceased. The house is small, but it was enough to offer respite from the warm summer sun for small groups, and to allow set up of all the food. The cakes were in the large parlor with the fireplace and piano. The buffet was in the smaller room off to the side - made it a little tight and warm, but with a small party, the line moved pretty fast. The gardens were a charming setting for the intimate ceremony. There were 8 tables (10 chairs each) on the grounds and another 4 on the wrap around porch. The guests (with the exception of the immediate family who sat in two rows at the front) just sat at their tables to watch. The band set up in the gazebo closest to the parking lot. I have to admit that much of what made it lovely was the weather, and having it at 10am helped that.

The plaque reads: Sprayberry Rock This rock bears circular and other patterned markings that were rubbed into its surface by prehistoric Indians some 4,000 years ago. The material of the rock is known as "soapstone" and was used by early North American inhabitants to make bowls, the beginning of one of these bowls can be seen on the side of the stone. Sprayberry Rock was originally located some 100 feet to the south west. It was discovered during construction of this First Atlanta office, and its markings and historical dating were verified in February 1984 by Mr. Lawrence W. Meier archaeologist for Cobb County. In recognition of its historical significance, First Atlanta moved the Sprayberry Rock to its present location in August 1984 to preserve it. (Note: First Atlanta refers to First Atlanta Bank which was bought out by Wachovia in 1986 which merged with Wells Fargo in 2008.)

There are other stones like this one with cup and ring marks in Georgia, and Tennessee. This is an important piece of prehistory, perhaps more than people realize. I hope that it remains intact and undamaged. There is a lot of vandalism these days at prehistoric sites.
