I've looked for them at every supermercado in the OC in addition to all swap meets selling those puffy orange wheel snacks. No luck anywhere. Typically I go to the 7-11 close to where everyone exits off the cruise. This time we decided to venture further and found Calimax. It's apx two blocks northeast to Papas and Beer. It's clean, the selection is decent and they have a ton of chips! :) My Cheetos were 27.50 pesos for 150 grams (4.5 oz) or 13.90 pesos for 100 grams. The math doesn't add up to buy the bigger package but it's still cheaper than buying at a 7-11. I also got some spices, containers of packaged salsa and allergy meds for a fraction of what I would pay in the US. We walked out with two full bags and it was $12 US. Score!! The bank has a better conversion rate than money exchange so I used my credit card everywhere I went. At the time I went, it averaged out to 20+ pesos to 1 US dollar if I charged it vs 18:1 if I had converted my $ for pesos. For those uncomfortable wandering off, i would suggest to travel in pairs. A woman from San Diego who travels here often said anything more than 2 blocks past Papas is sketchy. Calimax would be on the border if that was true.

This chain of stores is particularly focused on feeding the expat community. They don't have as…read morewide of a selection as Walmart, but they're also not as hectic. The prices are fairly comparable. Walmart has a bigger bakery, but you can find acceptable foods at Calimax. I particular recommend the Tilapia which comes frozen. It is stunning. Don't expect English spoken, but the Hispanic speakers will try their best. The Farmacia is also a nice feature. Not all Calimax stores are alike.

Yes, this is a best kept secret: my first taste of real artisan baked select and delivered daily, sourdough rounds, walnut, whole wheet, all seed, dark russian rye, garlic w gruyere, rosemary, french rolls, baguette's artisan baked and dense like home in San Francisco, CA. There are exquisite cheese's, organic yogurt, good pasta, dairy, hummus, juices from Cali, bulk dry foods, kitchen wares, specialty flavor's and curry style paste and spice's, tea, chocolates, coffee, cooking oils, from Southeast Asia. The friendly, helpful butcher's are in the back area ( English ok) and is impressively stocked with most everything and the quality is a cut above the rest. This is a smaller mercado and not to be compared to its sister market "Maria LUIS" in Maneadero. I love how this market is not huge and impersonal. Clearly it is managed by a team who understands the importance of great customer service, stocking their shelves selectively and cohesively, conve ience and organization, cleanliness, and how to market their goods etc.... However, the quality of their customer service has been inconsistent - from downright horrible to great. My first time picking up an order went as smooth as silk. The next few times were ridiculous. Our pick up time wasn't upheld. Not only that, they hadn't yet started gathering our items. Another time, we were lied to about our online order - whether they actually received it or not - then about whether they had employees available, etc. We set pickup time for 6pm but physically picked it up around 8:30pm. I was promised a follow-up from the local manager by the online customer service rep but never received it. The online deals are hard to beat so we won't stop altogether but we may try alternatives before shopping here.

Some of the decor in the store is a bit dated, but it is a small business and you should totally support it. Sage Market is doing their best with minimal customer base. You will find that it reminds you of an older nostalgic general store type market, but overall they have everything that you need at this location. The customers in the town are constant, but the big influx is going to be on the weekends when all of the tourists come to the Jacumba Hot Springs, Hotel, which is across the street. I was able to also purchase lottery tickets as they are an authorized California lottery retailer. The man at the front counter was also nice enough to let me use a pin for my lottery fill out slip. I will do a review on Danny's deli, but it is located within this market and the sandwiches are great so see my review for that deli after this. Overall, this is a great location. They have plenty of inventory with so many items to choose from. I'm serious about so many items so pretty much most of the items that you would find at a CVS or Walgreens or Walmart or a major grocery store are also available here. It is such a unique grocery experience, very clean and stocked up well. As soon as I walked in, I noticed they have a hot and ready station stocked up with meat-not chicken-but meat! that is already cooked and ready to consume. I ended up buying the T-bone steak. The meat itself was seasoned well, however a bit too rough to chew. I'd rate it 3/5. I'm used to only chicken in America being ready to go! They also have several alcoholic selections, beer and other spirits. This store offers self check out as well as the cashiers who are ready to assist. They also offer pesos exchange currency which is highly suggested to carry around when visiting Mexico. But this store also accepts debit/credit cards. The eggs were the iconic topic of the weekend; coming at a pack of 30 for $5.47 you definitely cant beat that in America's current prices. We survived off eggs for our four day weekend in Rosarito. Food definitely tastes different compared to California's groceries, but that's because they probably don't use pesticides in their veggies and such. Most of their produce is grown near by so I'm sure that's where the stores get their supply. Overall, this store was a huge convenience to have next to our Airbnb stay, walking distance makes it even better. Parking lot is big as well.
