Refreshingly quiet and calm beach. Small, but doesn't feel crowded. It has a nice neighborhood feel. Families and small groups. No blasting music or commotion. $40 for resident seasonal pass (I've noticed this pass goes up $5 each year). $25 for resident day pass. $35 for non-resident day pass. Sand is a bit rocky and gets very rocky the closer you get to the water. Oww! I wish I had water shoes. Calm water since it's the north shore. Three lifeguards on duty. Bathrooms at main building are clean enough. No indoor showers. Just an outdoor shower to rinse the sand off. La Casa Cafe Pizza walk-up window to grab a slice of pizza, salad or ice cream. Plenty of outdoor seating in a covered area. Super casual, barefoot/bathing suit ok. La Casa Cafe on site too. Never been, but looks like a proper restaurant (no-bathing-suits-type place). Fun little beach that's close to home without all the traffic and crowds.

Take your beach shoes, find a friend/family member with a township sticker, pack your own lunch/snacks, don't forget a camera and ENJOY one of this area's gems!! YES, there are TONS of rocks during low tide, and NO, it's not exactly the boardwalk experience you might be imagining, but if you're looking for a scenic, serene spot, you can't go wrong here... As you approach the beach, the last moment or two of the drive down Waterview St., with the (I imagine) incredibly over-priced beach "bungalows" on the left and the marshy bay (?) on the right, you just might forget where you are for a moment...!! Very scenic!! The beach, however, is NEVER crowded, has tons of space (esp. during that very rocky -- get OVER it!!! -- low tide!!) and amazing sand bars, views to infinity (or at least Connecticut on a clear day!!) and plenty of features for landlubber and water-babe alike! There's an Italian restaurant that just about always busy, and they also offer pizza and some other selections from their menu on the outside patio. My mom, sister and I shared a pie and it was comparable price and quality (or better) than any local pizzeria's offering. I think a baloney sandwich might even taste like filet mignon if I could eat it overlooking the calm (semi) pristine waters of the Long Island Sound on a daily basis... I grew up in this area, and like most, overlooked/underappreciated this and other north shore town beaches in favor of the ocean on the south shore, but since leaving for semi-landlocked Ohiooooooooo, I've come to truly appreciate these gems!! ENJOY!!

You won't see tourists come here, if you're lucky the only sound you'll hear is of an occasional dog barking along with some teenagers. This place is located just East of the National Grid towers, just Northeast of downtown Northport. Their was a lot more beach to this but after Sandy a breach was made and took out an entire fence. For the kids their are swings, a basketball court and that's pretty much it. I believe their is a fee but I'd never come here and pay anything over $0 for this small and quiet beach. If you're venturing on the North Shore and Hobart Beach/Eaton's Neck is your final destination, this place isn't so bad to stop by either before or after. Their's no boardwalk so that's kind of a downer but you won't find the Sunken Meadow crowd here. You can probably go out in the water quiet a bit and cast a line out and hopefully catch some fish.

First time at this beach was very enjoyable. $35 for non residents so a bit pricey but parking is fantastic, short walk to beach, no waves, which is perfect for little kids and the thing I love the most..... quiet! It's mostly families with young kids or older couples. No 20 year olds blasting rap and smoking weed. There's also a great playground for kids to play. The only things I did not love were the horse flies.. ugh! Not a lot but enough to annoy me. Also, I googled the water quality. For the day I went the quality was poor according to the swim website, but people were still swimming in the water and the lifeguards didn't say anything so.... I dunno. We didn't go in the water just because I'm super careful about stuff like that. However. Still a really great day. Will be back.

I've passed this hidden gem THOUSANDS of times, and while back in NY for a long weekend finally…read moredecided to check it out. Though I grew up less than 15-20 min. away, this beach was not in my township (Huntington) so we stuck to our own local N. Shore Long Island Sound beaches (rather than pay a craaazy entry fee). Off season, everyone's a resident of everywhere/anywhere, so a beautiful, sunny February afternoon was a PERFECT opportunity to check out Callahans. We had the whole place to ourselves, and my sister and I checked out the upper picnic area, the new/improved playground, and the wonderful views around the perimeter of the parking lot. Rumor has it there are other trails, but we did not see them, so we ventured down to the entrance to the beach to get a closer look at the BEAUTIFUL views... NOTE: I don't believe you can park in the little circle near the stairs leading down to the beach, though strangely enough, there are handicapped parking spaces there. This beach is many things: scenic, secluded, convenient if you live in the area, great for families, picnics, and golf fans, but it is definitely NOT handicapped friendly, unless you just plan to enjoy the view from above. There are MANY steps to get down to that beautiful beach, and you'd better be in reasonably good shape AND not forget anything in your car, because it's a TRIP up and down those stairs. While my sister and I didn't find the hiking trails that are supposedly there, we did hike the full length of the beach, a WONDERFUL walk all the way to neighboring Sunken Meadow State Park beach and back. BEAUTIFUL, invigorating, and very do-able, nearly 3 miles back and forth. Well worth the "ride!!" Some of the best things/places on Long Island are still free, especially if you go off season... Check this place out!!

Visit Date: February 20, 2021…read more So I had two adventures in one day, one by myself hiking here and one taking my son to bridgehampton later in the afternoon. I didn't park on Fort Salonga Road to get in, google maps always takes me a different way so I entered the trail from Makamah Road. The hike I took was a little over a 2 mile loop and I did it in snow because I will hike in snow even though it's a little rough. I had a great time looking at all the nature and actually taking time to think about stuff in life and realize what I want, what I don't want, what's in my life that could give me what I'm looking for, what I have to do to go get what I'm looking for. I might come back here with someone I'm currently flowing with if it still keeps up or again by myself or with my son when he's older and can handle a longer hike.

To the right, or Eastern half, the trail has hills ans passes a creek and pond, and then leads to a tidal area of Long Island Sound. To the left, or Western half, the trail tend to be flatter and passes through woods until again coming to the Northern end of the park and the tidal area. If you walk quietly, you will see chipmunks and the occasional deer along the trail. Please be careful of all the poison ivy on the sides of the trail and growing up some of the trees.

One of the unique…read morefeatures is the flying field where visitors can launch and fly model airplanes, which is always interesting to watch. The park is usually not very crowded, making it a peaceful spot for walking and exploring. Dogs are welcome, but they must remain leashed at all times. There are several maintained paths throughout the property that allow you to explore the grounds and take in the scenery. The park is also known for its abandoned buildings, which were once part of a former psychiatric facility. While the buildings themselves are not open to the public, they add an interesting historical element to the park. You'll often see law enforcement in the area, likely due to visitors exploring around the former structures. Overall, the grounds are well maintained, the trails are easy to walk, and there is plenty of open space to enjoy. It's a great option for a quiet walk, bringing your dog, flying model aircraft, or simply exploring a unique piece of Long Island history.

Being completely self sufficient, Kings County Asylum boasted its own Vegetable gardens and dairy at its height, it also supplied its own power through a small private electric plant on the premises. Eventually through modernization and improvements in medicine and health care the property eventually started to decommission buildings and no longer took on new patients. Completely closing around 1996 it eventually was turned over to the state becoming a park in 2000. I found Nissquogue river state park to be a very interesting park to visit, the north end of the park offers a nice walking trail as well as beautiful views of the Nissquogue river with over looking bluffs and a small beach front not for swimming. You will find a marina on the property offering boat slips as well as a boat launch if you choose to trailer your boat in for the day and many places to launch your kayak from and travel the river. Most of the property appears to still be in a developmental stage as far as parks go. Walking the property is an explorers delight allowing you to check out the decommissioned hospital buildings and infrastructure some of which dates back to the late 1800's and early 1900's.
