A Swiss man, Kurt runs this place. I have serious doubts that he is PADI certified or even a dive…read moremaster. But he will gladly rent out tanks for cheap to you and take you on his boat for a dive. He is likely be the ONLY person who will rent tanks without any questions on the Este side of the island. We went to and called 5 places and eventually found him. Be wary of the tanks you rent though, we came across two with seriously leaky o-rings. In his shop you can find spear fishing equipment and fishes for sale. He seems more of an aquarium enthusiast than a dive master. Why do I say this? He doesn't tell you what you are going to see. He never asked for dive cards. He doesn't show you anything. He swims off quickly without you. He doesn't do safety stops (eek). He doesn't even tell you the depth or length of the dive. While he is searching for peppermint crabs to capture and sell, he will tear up the reef getting them. Really? You are paying $65 to go on a questionable dive without a dive master. If you aren't comfortable, don't go! If you have a respect for the environment, don't go!

Kurt, the proprietor (a friendly Swiss fellow) hooked us up with Capt. Michael, a local divemaster and skipper. We set up a private charter for not much more than a cattle-call boat would cost. We rented tanks and weights from Puerto Rico Diver Supply (we had our own gear for everything else), and it was a reasonable $20. The rental equipment looked well-used but serviceable, and I was happy with the quality of the gear. Our charter went well, and Capt. Michael did a superb job. The right side of the shop is also an aquarium supply shop that sells a variety of tropical fish. Note: Beware the location shown on Yelp maps; it is inaccurate as of this writing (7/18/15). It is located across the street from the Villa Marina. Correctly shown on Google Maps. Here are coordinates: 18.339733, -65.640414

We were shuttled to and from the site by a funny great driver. Once there we were met by two informative guys who led us to our boats. They explained the process, gave us life jackets and oars. They helped us wade to our kayaks in pairs and off we went. One guy led in front, the other stayed in back. We quickly got to a spot and played with the water to trigger the bioluminescence. As the night progressed, the "glow" was better. Movement causes the glow so contrary to some pics, it's not always glowing unless you cause it. Unfortunately we didn't see any fish or turtles. Our guide Jake explained a lot of the history/makeup of the bay. He handled our questions effectively. I didn't get any pictures as they discourage cameras/phones and also say they capturing the images is difficult. I so wish I had gotten a pic of my husband and I either in the kayak or at least with our oars...We were sad it was over-what a great experience!

The prescription snorkling goggles were life changing. On our trip we saw a sea turtle and lots of coral reef activity! This was a highlight of our trip. I loved working with this company, I would give it 100/5 stars, best company on the island!!!!

"The Snorkel Spot" receipt clearly states "Store Credit Only" / "Returns must be within 30 days and are for store credit only." The enclosed quotes indicate exact sentence structure and wording. Taken literally, the 30 days time constraint applies only to the return period, NOT the credit period. After arriving at our rental house near Coral Bay, we discovered several noodles already on the property. Since we no longer needed the newly-purchased noodles from Snorkel Spot, we left them in our jeep and returned them to Snorkel Spot on our next trip into Cruz Bay on May 8. In accordance with the store owner's return policy, a rather unfriendly employee [with an attitude more like what would be expected on St Croix or St Thomas than from the friendly folks on St John], my wife was informed that a refund could not be credited to the Visa charge card used for the purchase, but a store credit would be given. Not exactly ideal because an ethical owner would offer a refund, but fair enough in this situation since store policy is clearly stated on the receipt. Except the store clerk then went on to explain that the store's owner does not actually intend to honor the wording policy stated on the store receipt. Rather, the store owner also puts a time limit on the issued store credit itself even though the policy on the receipt establishes no such time constraint. The store clerk said that it is preferred that the store credit be used immediately when the original merchandise is returned, but that the store owner would "generously" allow a 30-day period for the issued credit to be used. Since most store customers are short-term, one-time tourist visitors, the store owner's verbal policy [not her clearly stated written policy on store receipts] forces customers to buy something [at island-inflated prices that they probably have little use for] or simply allow the store owner to retain the customer's funds without receiving any merchandise. That makes for a nice profit margin for a one-time sale, but hardly ensures a satisfied customer or the likelihood of repeat business. However, since my wife and I make visits to St John [at least] twice yearly and are repeat customers for island businesses, she requested that she be permitted to use the store credit of $18 on our next visit [tentatively planned for December]. My wife was told that the store owner would not allow that, but my wife could talk to the owner herself. We left Cruz Bay [on May 8] without using the store credit, but returned to the store on the morning of May 11 prior to our departure for home later that morning. The Snorkel Spot owner was present, but still declined to honor the $18 credit for a future [December 2016] purchase. She did not seem at all concerned that her failure to honor her own written return policy represents unethical business practice and even can be considered dishonest behavior. Her response to our very civil appeal for fairness was to offer a gratuitous "Have A Good Day" and turn her back and walk away. She had her money and that was all she was concerned about. My wife did go ahead and use the store credit to buy some overpriced souvenir trinkets for a couple of her friends back home, although my preference would have been to contact the bank that issued the Visa credit card and discuss the possibility of blocking reimbursement of funds to the store because of the owner's violation of her own written return policy. But for $18 it would hardly be worth the effort, and writing this review itself is worth $18 to me. This is a factually accurate review without "spin". It is doubtful that my wife and I or any of our friends and family who often visit St John will ever step foot in the Snorkel Spot as long as the current owner still owns the shop. There are too many shops and businesses on the island who treat customers honestly and decently, as opposed to our unpleasant experience with The Snorkel Spot.

We…read morehad the pleasure of snorkeling with this family owned company and I wish I could have snorkeled with them an extra day! Laura, her husband, and their son Damian were passionate about what they do and I absolutely enjoyed my time with them. It was my first time snorkeling, so you can imagine it was a bit scary for me. However, Laura and her family made me feel safe. They helped me adjust my mask until it was perfect and always checked on me to ensure I was safe and having a good time. In addition, they take photos for you and point out the turtles, sting rays, puffer fish, and other rarities so that you don't miss them. They also take photos for you so you don't have to carry your own camera. Booking a round trip ferry ride with C.I.A. is convenient and saves you the hassle of waiting for tickets at Fajardo Ferry (separate review). Booking with them guarantees you a RT ticket; you'll receive a text with details on getting your tickets. When you get to Culebra, Laura meets you and drives you to Tamarindo Beach where the fun begins! For the SeaVenture package, you start off with a short kayak to your snorkeling destination. You snorkel for a while and then kayak back to shore. Here, you'll have a lunch provided to you by Laura and her family. There's fruit, juice, soda, water, and these amazing sandwiches that are seriously to die for! Laura says it's made of blended cheese, ham, and peppers (I should have asked for the complete recipe!). After lunch, you snorkel in a separate area where the beautiful turtles hang out! This was my favorite part! You will be informed as to how to behave around them to avoid scaring them away. After this excursion, Laura drives you to the famous Flamenco Beach and picks you up in an hour (depending on when you finish the SeaVenture). She takes you straight to the ferry and you're off to Ceiba! All in all, I would definitely snorkel with C.I.A. in the future!!

I called them up to get some more details and make reservations. Damien Sr was very helpful in getting our ferry tickets even though we gave them a short notice. We needed transportation but ended up renting our own car, because they needed a min of 8 people to arrange transportation. Taxi is 20$pp, so paying 160$ for just the two us didn't make any sense. We were greeted by Laura at the Culebra terminal promptly on time. She drove us to Tamarind beach for snorkelling trip. The trip took a little while to start, we had to wait for some other guests to join us which a little bothersome as we were raring to go. Damien Jr explained the basics of kayaking and the tour details. The tour is split into two parts 1) Kayaking for 20 min to reach a good section of the reef and then snorkeling. 2) Snorkeling in another section to see the turtles and some coral reefs. They provided food/refreshments after we got back from the first section of the trip. They also took lots of pictures which was great. We saw a lot of fishes, sting rays, turtles, different kinds of corals. I would have liked to know more about the different kinds of fish and the coral that we saw. We spent a good amount of time in the water and after that Laura dropped us off at Flamenco beach. Flamenco beach was awesome, it has turquoise blue water and white sand, we spent around an hour at the beach. We left around 4 to catch the ferry back to Fajardo terminal. We had a great experience! Double thumbs up!
