Mario the store owner is such a cool guy! Very knowledgable, personable and kind. Just like the other licensed professionals that work there. I get my hair cut by Tim Saiz who is an awesome stylist. My haircut is more just a taper/fade style so Tim is far over qualified for the job, but finding someone who can really give you a fresh fade and taper is lot a harder than it seems. Another fantastic cut and service by Mario. The facility is clean and super hip and these few times making an appoint with him runs me about a week or two booked out. He is well worth the wait. The salon has been careful with Covid practices and even offer a new mask so you can get rid of the current one that has cut hair clippings in it. He also works with his clients personal hair styling and sends the client out the door with how the client would typically wear it on a daily basis (he usually does better than I do myself regardless). Getting your hair done by Mario Griego at Craft is rather like trading in your dusty old Volkswagen Squareback with a dent in the side and a bumper sticker that says "Kill Your Television" and getting a brand new Mercedes SLS AMG with Bose surround sound. Recently when in New Mexico, I woke up and freaked out when I looked in the mirror - it was a five alarm hair emergency! At first, I grabbed for my cell to call 911 as I thought this was an alien intruder. Then I realized it was my own hair going a bit Einstein on me. YIKES! Don't you just hate it when that happens? Then there were those intermittent gray hairs, which I used to return to the mothership for a warranty replacement. Sadly, last time my mother returned the hair with a note stating the following: "Dear Unit Number 6, I regret to inform you that your warranty has expired". Truly heartbreaking. Mario from Craft banned those graying antiquities to an alternate Universe, and relocated the Einstein vibe back into my brain (to go with the other Einsteins already there, of course LOL) - and all while keeping me thoroughly entertained. Mario Griego from Craft is an advanced hair genius ("AHG" for those visiting from from Acronyms Anonymous). His technique can only be described as THE MARIO METHOD (patent pending) - the algorithm for which is no doubt continually changing, same as Google's; so there is no sense in trying to reverse engineer it on behalf of the competitor: a blithering fossil up the street who uses a razor to rip your hair out and make it frizzy on purpose and while offering you one of their sandwiches. Seriously. The entire vibe and staff at Craft is cool, hip, modern and foward thinking. Like you are in Manhattan or Williamsburg/Brooklyn instead. A true oasis in the desert. Did I mention the lamp shades? O-U-T-S-T-A-N-D-I-N-G! (...because you wouldn't want them doing your hair if they shopped for interior decor at Walmart). When you finish, go visit Zendo Cafe a few blocks away and enjoy an vegan organic almond milk latte with the other beautiful people hovering about - across from a true castle (you'll see what I mean, just do it). I was not pleased with my haircut. It seemed uneven and strange. I showed my stylist a photo of what I wanted, however, it did not match when I walked out of there. Finding the right stylist is tricky, and I've been fortunate to have had mine cut by people like Oribe, which is tough act to follow. Unfortunately, I had to have this cut corrected by another stylist, so with the lack of attention to detail, I shan't be returning to this really well designed establishment. read more

I've traveled a long and bumpy road to find the perfect hair salon in Albuquerque. Craft is, hands down, the best. When you walk in, prepare to be whisked away to Brooklyn, Chicago, or LA. The simple, minimalist interior, the exposed brick wall, the hip, tattooed stylists -- it's all what you would expect to find in a much larger metropolitan area. My stylist, Atalie, is very talented. The first time, I came in with a few pictures of the pixie cut I wanted, but asked her to use some creative license to find a style that worked for me. I couldn't have been happier with the result. Hallelujah! Atalie can deliver one helluva pixie cut. I've had many short haircuts in my day, and they have ranged from masculine to choppy to bee-hivey, to - inexplicably - all of the above. Atalie, however, delivered a very short pixie that was feminine, soft, professional, and stylish. It also had the crown jewel of a great haircut -- while it was growing out between appointments, it looked a little different, but still amazing, at every length. I have been back a few more times, and each cut has been of the same high quality. I really can't recommend Craft, and Atalie specifically, enough. At a recent happy hour event, I found out that 7 out of 8 people at my table are regulars at Craft. We all have different stylists, but are all equally impressed. Trust me -- this is quickly becoming the hottest new salon in ABQ. Hip modern vibe, friendly and talented stylists, reasonable prices, and an overall pleasant, relaxing experience. After leaving Country Club Men's Salon, Craft Hair Studio was the first place I visited while trying to find a new place to regularly get my haircut. The owner, Mario, cut my hair. This place gets busy, so book your appointment a few days in advance. Totally worth it. The entire staff at Craft is incredible--exceptionally helpful and friendly. The professionalism here is also extraordinary, but not overbearing. The vibe here is authentic, hip, and casual. The decor is simple and sophisticated, but not boring. It seemed as every stylist absolutely loved the work they were doing, taking the time to accommodate each client as needed. Upon entering, I was immediately checked in and offered a beverage while I waited. During my wait, I observed that everyone was so at ease. It definitely made coming to a new place so much easier. After Mario's assistant washed my hair, it was time for the moment of truth. What the hell was this guy going to do with my hair? Mario didn't ask too many questions about how I wanted my hair styled, however he did ask the right questions in order to give me something that worked for me. I had already had an idea of what I wanted my hair to look like, and it was a pleasure collaborating with Mario in order to achieve the look that I desired. He is a very witty and intelligent character, it was wonderful to chat with him as he cut my hair. At the time of writing, Craft has been open for three years and is ranked number three on Yelp. I was referred here by a friend with a short style that met my ever demanding tastes. I cannot explain how absolutely pleased I was with my stylist Josh. I went to get a new A-line cut and I was super nervous about entrusting a stylist stranger to the job. His abilities to capture the exact angle and body I was expecting were incredible. Not only did the cut look beautiful that day, but as it grew out it evolved to a still killer style. I love this place. Everyone is awesome. Mario does a great job and he's a blast to spend 45 minutes with. I've tried several places in town over the five years that I've been here and unless something terrible happens, I'll keep coming back. My second favorite lady ever (first was in Maryland) was at Mark Pardo and then disappeared. Then I went to a lady that left my daughter and I in a mostly vacant building while she went out and smoked. I had a favorable experience at Square Root and really liked Jason, but the cut was always just a little off from what I wanted. I guess I needed the free spirit and hilarity that is Mario. He does a great job with my almost 12-year old's thick, wavy hair, too. Great, small salon. Pilar is fantastic with the little ones (my son adores her). I've been 4 times now and I'm pretty pleased. After being a loyal customer of Mario's at Heart & Soul, I was happy to hear of his new venture with Craft Hair Studio - after all, once you've found a fabulous hairdresser, you'll follow them in all their ventures. Mario is fantastic with hair and coloring. I don't know how much more I can say - my hair always looks fabulous, he always provides styles that work with my lifestyle, and he does great coloring that doesn't require me to go back every 8 weeks (I mean, if I could, I would, but I'm a grad student....). You know how you sometimes feel like you need a change with your hair, but can't articulate what you want? I can go to Mario and say "hey, I think I want it shorter - what do you think would work?" and leave with a exactly what I needed, but didn't know how to say. He's that good, seriously. Benefits of Craft include decent parking (!!!!), a mini-fridge and coffee maker which have saved my relationship while my boyfriend waits, and a totally hip vibe.
