This was an immediate red flag because it told me he was not listening to me and was just there to get the job done and move on. I told him that I was experiencing loose stool, and this was an issue that I did not have before starting a medication, and had ONLY been occurring since I had been on a specific medication. And what does he say? "You need a colonoscopy." You're going to tell me rather than ask me what's the medication, let's research the side effects, let's see what dietary changes may fix this, you're immediately going to jump to an invasive surgical procedure? And we already covered that there was no physical discomfort, aches and pains--and that this loose stool ONLY came after taking the medication I'm on. He just wanted the money he would get for having me do a colonoscopy.

I had a frustrating experience as a new patient with this confusing practice…read more TLDR: Don't waste your time trying to see this doctor for functional medicine. It's a cash only. Practice selling supplements etc. The whole story... I called for an appointment and did a pretty standard intake conversation over the phone. I gave my details, my insurance information and based upon verification was booked with an appointment time that they gave me in 4 weeks to be seen at the Katy clinic. Imagine my surprise when I arrived to my appointment and the patient receptionist told me that I there was no record of me in the system! I was aghast. Not only had I had a 20-minute conversation with someone, I had given a lot of my personal details like my demographic information, health concerns and insurance information! After refusing to let them gaslight me, I was able to look in my records and give them the date of my call as well as verification that I had sent my insurance information by email to them. Apparently no one in the office actually answers the phone, a faceless nameless call center does that work. Somewhere in their convoluted and opaque process, someone took all this info from me, received my email, quoted me an appointment time, and then failed to make the appointment they gave me. The front desk person I worked with was unapologetic for all of this. She seemed to think I should have inferred that because I hadn't been texted any reminders I should have guessed there was a problem. She offered me alternate times without apologizing for the inconvenience or unprofessionalism they had already displayed. When she asked me (again) what my issue was she informed me that I needed "the functional medicine side" and not the "gastroenterology side", whatever that means. One doctor, one practice... It's not my job to know how you guys internally structure your practice and how you segregate patients?? She went on to begin booking the other appointment - a video visit which apparently is the only way Dr. V sees new patients (they didn't tell me that on the phone they made a face to face appointment that I waited weeks for). While standing there and waiting, my eyes caught on a brochure advertising their services which explicitly said that the gastroenterology visits are insurance visits and the ones for the functional medicine practice are "insurance free". I stopped her immediately. It turns out that what I wanted to see the doctor about is their cash clients only part (supplement sales). I just turned around and walked away. I'm super frustrated and angry - I had super high hopes for this practice and instead walked away with my time wasted and disrespected as well as a negative opinion of their professionalism. I'm not in the market for a cash only supplement pill mill, and that seemed to be what they were trying to push me towards. Don't waste your time with this one!

I had a GI bleed a month prior to coming to HGI (Houston Gastro Institute) for a follow up. I was scheduled for two procedures, an EGD and Colonoscopy. I paid in full out of pocket almost $2,800 which was not the original price they quoted me at consultation. Nevertheless, it was paid. I then prepped correctly the a day and a half before scheduled date. My wife and I were the first through the doors besides employees at 8:30am. We waited, and waited , and waited till there were 4 couples in the lobby before they started calling people in the back. It was now 9:30 and 2 clients went to the back to start their prep. It was 9:50am when I was called to the back to prep. It took 28 minutes for someone to talk to me after changing into my gown, then 45 more minutes till I had an IV put in. As I watched 3 clients complete the procedure I realized the time was 11:08am. I asked when are they gonna start because I was extremely uncomfortable. 15 minutes later a great lady said that she will be taking me back in 15 more minutes. Very close to 11:40am was when I went to the back and put under. A little after noon I was being wheeled outside to my waiting wife whom had no idea what was taking so long. A few weeks later I get a bill in the mail stating that I have a remaining balance and I need to be paid. I tried to call HGI multiple times with no answer. I had enough and drove 45 minutes to the office to find out what why I still had a bill. THE FRONT DESK PEOPLE should work for Walmart because they don't care. I asked to speak to someone about the bill. The guy asked me why and I said I would like to have that conversation with them and not in an open lobby where they don't care about HIPAA. I then asked what Herbie thinks the meaning of HIPAA means that's when he got upset and went past the glass doors and started talking freely about why I wanted to talk to management. After showing the same person I paid the full about the bill I got in the mail, she called another company to see why. We got made sure that the bill was a complete mistake. I had a followup visit a few days ago and I confirmed that I was going. My wife went out of town and I became very busy with work and couldn't make it. I tried to call 4 time to tell them that I cannot make the appointment. No answer. I Live on the west side of Sealy, TX, which is 45 minutes from my house to HGI. Needless to say I did not go to my appointment. the weekend went by and today Monday the 14th of April, 2025. I got a text message stating that my account will be charged $150 because I did not show for the appointment. I drove to Katy and stopped by HGI to talk to the about the charges and also have a copy of my records. Same two front dest employees. While talking to the lady, the male was just looking at me. I didn't say a word to him. She told me that to have my records I'd have to pay $25, but to send it to another provider it would be free. $25 for my records. Just unbelievable. I will NEVER go back!! They got paid but I will make sure to tell everyone I know to go elsewhere. Look at all the 1 starts they have.

Unfortunately, every time that I have visited her office, my time has been completely wasted. The first time I came, I sat in a room by myself for almost an hour and a half. The second 45 minutes. My third time, which is now, I have been waiting for an hour. After my first appointment, I was given another patients lab order. This lab order had extremely personal information such as address, phone number, date of birth, etc. When I noticed the error, my phone calls were not answered. I drove over to the office to get the correct lab order, and several staff members were in the office. I get there are other things to do, but when a patient calls 3 times and there's no attempt to answer, that raises problems. Several days later when I got a call back, the office staff was curt and rude to me, acting like it was my mistake that they gave me the wrong order. When I scheduled procedures with the office, I was not told how to prep for the procedures. I had to call the day before and ask what I was supposed to do. Again, office staff acted like it was my fault that I didn't know how to prep for these surgeries. A family member had to go to the office to pick things up for me because I had to work. Today, I had two appointments scheduled. The first one was ignored, and the second I sat and waited an hour for. When Dr. Tamerisa finally came in, she was shocked that she hadn't seen me sooner based off of my lab results. How was I to know that I was supposed to come earlier when no one reached out to me to say they had my labs, or that I needed to schedule a follow up appointment. I am extremely disappointed with the management of this office. Dr. Tamerisa is great, and I am sure the rest of the other medical staff is great, but the management of the office staff is horrible, and my time has never been wasted more at a doctors office. I do not recommend this office if you care about your time being wasted.

Trying to get an…read moreappointment has been one of the most frustrating experiences I have ever had with a medical provider. The office rarely answers the phone, and when someone does answer, I often receive conflicting information from different staff members. Communication is severely lacking, and patients are left to do all the follow-up work themselves. I have had my referral sent to this office three separate times, yet each time I was told they never received it. This caused unnecessary delays in my care and created a great deal of stress and frustration. Instead of helping resolve the issue, I was repeatedly told to have the referral resent. On one occasion, a staff member assured me that she would personally take care of the situation and call me back. I never received a return call. This seems to be a pattern of making promises without following through. To make matters worse, I was informed that my files had been lost because I had not been seen in approximately ten years. While I understand offices may have policies regarding older records, I was shocked by the lack of organization and professionalism surrounding my information. Rather than helping me navigate the process, I was left feeling like no one was taking responsibility. The overall level of professionalism in this office has been disappointing. Important paperwork is misplaced, phone calls go unanswered, messages are not returned, and patients are left without clear guidance. Something as simple as scheduling an appointment turned into a lengthy and exhausting process. Patients should be able to expect timely communication, accurate record keeping, and basic professionalism from a medical office. Unfortunately, my experience has been the complete opposite. I hope management takes these concerns seriously and makes improvements so that future patients do not have to deal with the same issues.

And based on similar one-star reviews about this office, my experience wasn't a fluke. It's a pattern. The first red flag? Three rescheduled appointments. One of them on the actual day of the visit. At that point, I should've gone home, saged the house, or consulted a witch. But I showed up anyway. The doctor was fine. Some of the front-desk staff were kind, and the nurse and the insurance coordinator were helpful. Unfortunately, they are wildly outnumbered by the chaos gremlins running scheduling and billing. Before our follow-up, I called specifically to confirm we'd be paying cash for this visit. We did not want to use insurance. Their own billing office approved this ahead of time, and noted it clearly on my account. On the day of the appointment, I paid cash as planned and left thinking everything was handled. It was not. Because at some point after my cash payment, someone in billing took it upon themselves to run the visit through my insurance anyway, despite written instructions and prior approval. Best-case scenario, this was a spectacular administrative blunder. Worst-case scenario, it edges disturbingly close to insurance fraud. Either way, I suddenly had a bill for the portion that insurance didn't cover. This kicked off my descent into customer service hell. I made at least ten documented calls to their billing department. The head of billing never returned a single one. The one person who did answer (the very same employee who originally approved my cash-pay arrangement) repeatedly promised a callback "within 24-48 hours." This was fiction. A bedtime story. A fairytale meant to soothe the naïve. The only voicemail I ever received triumphantly announced the balance had been refunded. Adorable. Because a month later, I received yet another bill. For their mistake. Again. Eventually, for the sake of my sanity and gastrointestinal stability, I paid the $33 balance. Not because I owed it, but because I wanted to sever all ties with this office before I aged five years and developed new digestive problems. To be clear, there are good people in this office. But the scheduling and billing departments are an unorganized disaster, and I would sooner drive across Houston (during rush hour, with construction, while listening to my teenager's Spotify playlist) than deal with this mess again. Proceed with caution. Bring documentation. Bring patience. Possibly bring antacids.
