The service was great: casual, friendly and timely. The girls working there made me feel welcomed and didn't treat me like another annoying tourist. FYI: they have an English menu as well, just ask for it. I went with the smoked chicken salad sandwich on a multigrain bread. The moment I bit into that bread I knew I was back in Europe: it tasted so real and wonderful. You can taste different nuts and seeds and the texture had a great crunch in the outside and soft center to hold the filling. The chicken salad itself was great as well: little mayo taste and generous chunks of chicken. I could also possibly taste some added pieces of died fruit, but I am not sure about that- I devoured that sandwich really quickly! The price was not too bad too, as for a fresh and healthy option- a sandwich and iced tea can were about 11 Euros. If I ever make it back to Amsterdam I will for sure look out for B & B Lunchroom signs!

My husband and I were really impressed with everything we ordered. The coffee was delicious and decadent and the Dutch breakfast platter was sumptious and never ending (to include ham and cheese platter with sprouts, a cup of fresh berries, granola and yogurt, eggs and warm ham, some veggies, coffee and fresh orange juice, and a basket of rolls and croissants!). My favorite was the fresh fig+goat cheese+arugula sandwich with honey and almonds. I still have dreams of this and am determined to recreate it one day! Delicious.

It had an eclectic bookstore feel to me with its grade-school-like tables and chairs, exposed ductwork, and decorative lighting. The hexagons painted on the floors and the artwork on the walls gave the cafe some character. I was just excited to find a vegan restaurant in Amsterdam! We started with the Bitter Ballen, which are a traditional Dutch snack made with meat served with mustard. This was obviously a vegan version and these gooey balls were served with mustard. They were a little underwhelming, but I was happy to try a traditional Dutch snack veganized. We tried two other dishes -- the Fried Seitan Sandwich made with seitan, jalapenos, and tomatoes on a sub roll. It was pretty good. And I had the Quinoa and Black Bean Burger, which was also very good! The desserts in the dessert case were tempting, but we were pretty full and couldn't make room for them. I'll definitely come back to this place to try more when I return next year!

It's tucked a bit outside the centre of the city to the west, and well worth the walk. Their coffee is good not great, but the variety of nut milks available with it make it fun. The food - ohhhh the food. The Banh Xeo is special - unique, solid Asian flavours make this new take on an already unique food in Western market a hit for just €9,50. And the Gepaneerde Aubergine is perfectly crafted for maximum flavour - just special for just €7,50. The veg burger is rumoured to be the best you'll ever have - I had to stop, but write me when you venture in to let me know how it was! The fresh juices are super refreshing. The staff even more so. Fear not if you don't speak Dutch - plenty of friendly English coming from the team here. Come hungry...but as with all vegan food, make sure you're not too far from more food in a few hours' time when you're hungry again.

There were a number of luncheon options available including several types of quiche, lasagna, salads, and rice bowls. I opted for a mushroom quiche which was served with a plentiful salad of quinoa, tomatoes and herbs. Sweetie got the lasagna and it was quite nice - and a very ample serving. I saw notes that the chocolate tart was not to be missed here, and they were certainly right! So rich and dense and delicious with some whipped cream and fresh strawberries. I recommended it to some people traveling in our group and a few days later they were singing the praises of that chocolate tart as well. All in all a very homey and pleasant place to grab an unpretentious bite in Amsterdam. It made me feel like dining at a family buffet, and the quiet was appreciated in the midst of this busy city.

At 24 euros, the plates are a little pricey, but they are generously portioned. The dining area is small, but serviceable and homey. I enjoyed coming back here so much, and my friend did too. Together with her daughter, her nephew and some other employees she made Amsterdam fell in love with authentic food of her country of birth. The Surinam kitchen is a melting pot of several cuisines: Creole, Javanese, Chinese and Indian. In her cookbook Mavis Kookt she unveils lots of her recipes. For ready to eat food you have to place a catering order or visit one of the markets (Pure Markten) in Beatrixpark, Amstelpark or Park Frankendael. One of my favourites out of her kitchen - once a garage - is her kippasteitje, a pretty mini pie filled with stewed chicken, green peas, tomato and silver onions. Many people use puff pastry to make this pie, but not Mavis: she uses 'real dough' - not too thick, not too thin. If you are staying in one of the larger hotels or in the Centrum, plan a trip over to Potgietersstraat 47 and check this place out. For our second meal I had the Dorado special, two large, tender pieces of fish with deliciously crispy skin on a bed of vegetables, while J had the quiche met prei spinazie talleggio en walnoten, a large, square section of pie that is so thick it looks like a slice of Sicilian-style pizza. We each had some celery-leek soup that was creamy and light and really hit the spot. For our third and final meal we split half orders of the wisselende ravioli van holy ravioli (5 good-sized raviolo in a thick bolognese-type sauce), lamsschouder met rozemarijnjus boer steven (a fantastically tender piece of lamb au jus on more root vegetables), and the pork belly special (a large piece on a bed of root vegetables, mushrooms, and asparagus).
