The workers are especially attentive to customers who want to repair or replicate something a grandmother knit. Pretty divergent from contemporary mainstream American society. Clean store with a good variety of yarn. I was greeted and told if I had questions to ask. The yarn is on the more expensive side and I say this only by comparison to other stores. I would say if you have a specific project or want to purchase a gift to stop in, and they will help you with the selections; however, I just stopped in and looked around and this is what I selected. I really love the colors! The items were around $60 so you can judge for yourself. I am unsure if there are Wisconsinites who make yarn varieties but I think a wall of local yarn would be a great addition to the store. read more

Milwaukee has a serious lack of yarn stores! One might think, living in an area where winter seems to last about half the year, we'd be a great market for knitters. Alas, while I await the day that our city is awash with yarn sellers, for now at least, I have Cream City Yarn. Cream City Yarn is about as delightful a yarn shop as you might imagine. The building is adorable - the space is not huge, but it definitely as a cozy living room feel to it when you walk in. There is a great selection of different yarns to choose from: everything from muted neutrals to bright fuchsia. The vast majority of the yarn is made of natural materials - not much acrylic to be found in this shop. I tend to make quite a few baby things, and their selection of yarns that would work for baby items is a bit smaller than I would like, but I can usually find something. Price wise, Cream City Yarn is not the cheapest. You're paying for quality, of course, but some of the prices of the yarn might make larger projects (like blankets) unfeasible. The staff are VERY knowledgeable. I've stopped by a few times with works-in-progress and asked the opinion of staff. They are always eager to help and provide suggestions. The shop also offers classes, so I imagine they are quite used to helper knitters of all ability levels! While I wish this shop was located in Milwaukee, it is always worth the trip out to Brookfield to stop by Cream City Yarn! read more

First, to other LGBT folks of Brookfield, this is a great and safe place. Craft places tending toward older crowds can be pretty hit or miss, and this is definitely a hit. This place is awesome. If you've only ever used yarn from places like Michaels or hobby lobby, learning how to use good quality yarn might intimidate you. Take the plunge. Get a little more familiar with yarn sizes and materials (cotton, alpaca, wool). That's really all you need to start buying beautiful, long lasting, and soft yarns. You'll thank yourself when your yarn isn't made out of plastic anymore! The yarn is more expensive than the plastic products at craft shops; however, there is a good range of less-to-more pricey products. You can get 100 grams of superb wool yarn for $13, or you can get 100 grams of a silk and linen mix for $37. (PS, they sell berroco berroco, and I used their half wool/half alpaca yarn for my sweaters. It's $14 per 100 grams!) They also do sell some plastics (a nylon mix is very useful in socks), it's just not my style personally. The worst thing about this place is that it is very knitting oriented, kind of leaving crochet in the dust, especially in their book selection (there's like 14 knitting books and only ONE crochet book). Still, even as someone who only crochets, I love it. It is worth your time. Also, no shame to people who buy craft store yarns for money purposes! Sigh. I wish I had good things to say. One staff member here is great (Cait), the others (owner included) can be just awful. They offer classes that are very hit or miss. Sadly, the attitude and snobbery make it not worth going and drive things like online sales from elsewhere. I used to work near this shop but decided to visit today since I'd seen their social media presence. There were also things I'd seen online in their store. I guess they save all the enthusiasm for social media. The woman behind the counter was more interested in her flagon of coffee than me. I love this store. I'm far from being a proficient creator of anything with yarn, but I still like to look and think "maybe this time" as I come across some beautiful skein or hank of yarn or some extraordinary sweater, shawl, coat, made by someone more creative than I. What I really like about this place is the predominance of natural yarns and blends. As I "oohed" and "ahhed" my way around, I saw very little acrylic or acrylic blends. From the Merino, Peruvian, and British wools to the mohair and silk and alpaca, Cream City has lots to chose from for anyone wanting to use natural fibers. I especially liked the natural, undyed wool in the earth-tone colors. Most of the yarn isn't inexpensive, but anyone who know his or her way around knitting needles will end up with something extraordinarily beautiful for a lot less cost than a ready-made piece. Cream City is a cute little store with some amazing yarns. I think I've found another place to add to my must-visit list whenever I'm in the area. read more

Sales associate was super helpful and all appropriate COVID safety precautions were in place (masks, barrier at the register, limited capacity, etc.). This place has a huge selection of various types of yarn for socks, swearers, scarves. or whatever you might have in mind to knit or crochet. The staff is also very friendly and knowledgeable. The prices were slightly higher than I expected, but I am not one who regularly buys yarn, so I have no real frame of reference.I also realize that this is an independent store, not part of a large chain, and they carry only really high quality merchandise. Stopped by on vacation. Got a welcoming good morning. Help with finding yarns by locals. I purchased some locally dyed yarn and a couple of sock yarns. They had Legos for my four year old. Overall, this is a decent place. I do like the selection of yarns here. When I first walked in, there is one lady who works there who is extremely nice and helpful. She helped me pick out a pattern and yarn. I think I just had a bad last impression with another woman who I assume is the owner. I wasn't sure if I had a certain size needle and asked if I could purchase it and return it if I had the needle already. She replied, "You would have to return it tomorrow. How do I know if you completed your project in a week and then returned it." I find this quite offensive. Maybe she did not mean the comment that way, but it definitely felt rude. I wish there were more options in Milwaukee for yarn stores. read more

I want to like this place but I just can't make myself. I've taken a class there and have shopped there dozens of times. Most of the employees are amazing but I have witnessed one of the women who works there (I think it's one of the owners) be down right rude to multiple customers (condescending remarks, ignoring obvious customers waiting, and even mocking products that they sell.) I overlooked her attitude because otherwise it's a nice place. What really did it for me was them bribing people with a raffle to get them to vote for them for a local "best of..." poll. You vote for them and get entered into their raffle. I just find that to be ethically gray, atbest. I think they should be more concerned with customer service than a popularity contest. You shouldn't need to bribe people to vote for you if you're really doing a good job... There are other local yarn shops around who also offer classes, any of the products they sell at CCY, and the staff is much more pleasant. read more

Such a cute little building (former bank perhaps) and the place has a clean welcoming feel to it. I like their selection, but it is just so pricey! Definitely a dollar or two more per skein than what I normally pay. Their sale yarn is discounted so minimally that it doesn't seem like much of a sale. Still the women here are nice and it would be a bright sunny place to take a class or sit and knit. I like that they have an ipad out for folks to look up patterns and things on ravelry. This place is great. I walked in shortly before closing one evening, just to glance around. When I told the lady working there that I was fairly new to knitting she was totally sweet and friendly. She showed me around the (beautiful!) store, giving me tips about yarns and needles and patterns. Then she invited me over to use the computer to find a scarf pattern, printed it out for me, and helped me pick out the right kind of yarn and needles. By the time I was done, it was ten minutes past closing. I apologized, but she simply smiled and said that it was absolutely fine; that she was just excited to be getting a new knitter started on a new project. I've been a customer of Cream City Yarn for a little over a year now and have always been very pleased with their service and products available. I took a beginner's class there last year and was very pleased with the amount of friendly support and education that I received. I've been back for a few more classes since then and am always thankful for the amount of help that I get and the information that I gain. I also love the assortment of high quality yarns and products they offer. It makes a huge difference in your knitting projects, and even as a beginner, I'm making beautiful, high-quality items that I can proudly wear. The store is beautiful and inviting, very cozy with seating available to make yourself comfortable, and they also have a large variety of samples to view, which is great for inspiration, or in my case, motivation to learn more! This is a pretty high end yarn store. I recently had an unusually nice experience with a saleswoman Mary who was very helpful with ideas and a pattern, showing me the shop's sample. My previous experiences were not so friendly; the atmosphere was a bit snobbish. Sales are sparse. When inquiring about ordering more yarn to fill in some sale yarn for a sweater I was told that there was no guarantee that the sale and ordered yarn would be the same dye lot. I visited this store today, and if I could, I would give zero stars. I wanted to purchase 2 skeins of yarn. The sign on the display showed the price at $12.60 per skein. At the register, the yarn rang up at $13.95 per skein. The cashier, Rachel, checked the shelf price and agreed with me that the yarn should have rung up at $12.60. Rachel called Chris over to ask how to fix this issue. Chris said that there was a price increase and that the correct price was $13.95 per skein. When I pointed out that selling items for a higher price than advertised was illegal per WI Stat Ch. 98.08(1), she said it wasn't and that it was "just an error", and refused to sell the yarn for the shelf price of $12.60. Apparently, Chris is above WI law. This begs the question, how many other prices are being falsely displayed in this store? Unfortunately for Chris, I know a great many knitters and none of us will shop at her store again. read more

I was just thrilled to find another yarn store when I had found out that Loop, very near me on the East Side of Milwaukee, had closed some time ago. I went to Cream City Yarn specifically looking for a pattern so I did not get a chance to check out the prices and selection of the yarn too much. I decided to write a review because I wanted to share how helpful the saleswoman was. I told her what I was looking for and she found 2 or 3 books for me to look through. When i went up to the counter to potentially buy a book and discuss with her, she had been searching for patterns online for me the whole time. She invited me behind the counter to show me how to use the website and show me the patterns she found. I felt bad because I ended up not buying anything and deciding to use the website she showed me to find a free pattern but her helpfulness and putting my needs before sales will definitely make me go back to make my next purchase! read more

I wen to Cream City Yarn yesterday with my sister who was visiting. She needed to pick up specific yarn for a group project that she was working on that CCY carried. I have been to the shop once before and purchased a few skeins of yarn for a few projects (which I have not quite completed!). On this particular visit, I was holding to my "don't-buy-more-yarn-until-other-stuff-is-finished" policy, but was in love with a particular poncho sample knit up. I believe it was Kristine P. that helped us (according to the name on my sister's receipt) and she spent several minutes talking to me about the pattern, yarn, etc. I wasn't sure how it would look on, and she insisted I even try it on to see. She even offered to add a note into my account with the name of the yarn I loved, so that if I need to order it when I was ready, I could easily find it. She was beyond helpful to someone who wasn't buying anything on this visit, and I will definitely be back. She did not try to push me purchasing the yarn on the spot, and for that reason alone I will be back! The yarn can probably be bought more inexpensively online, but you can't replace the customer service and help you get when you buy local... Thank you so much for your help! read more

With so few wool shops for all of us, I am very grateful to visit and shop at CCY. I hope that my support helps to keep them in business and supply my enjoyment of working with beautiful wool! I like to see the colors and feel the texture of a skein before I decide what I will use for a project. Walking into a yarn shop is a feast for the eyes. It is also an intimate space where one can feel like a stranger--does everyone else know one another? It can be filled with locals but I found the women working there very attentive and helpful. Each shopper was promptly helped while I was there. It seemed that she was able to handle three tasks at once, to meet the needs of shoppers. Staff seem very knowledgeable and want to help find what I need, even offering comparable wools if they don't have a particular brand. I will definitely be taking by business elsewhere from now on. I regret ever stepping foot into Cream City Yarn. The employee who "helped" me was rude and unfriendly. She certainly wasn't very knowledgeable about what this yarn shop did and did not carry. I regret the purchase I made and would return it for a refund but that would require me going back there and it isn't worth my time, as I fear I wouldn't have any better of an experience the second time around. The items I purchased were exactly what I was looking for, but the associate didn't even take the time to fully listen to me or she could have pointed me to the exact right place. I myself work in sales and would lose my job in a heartbeat if I treated people the way this woman treated me. I have one description for her and it's "Yarn Snob" (and not at all in a good way). I'm honestly not sure how this place stays in business. After talking to several other people, getting recommendations of some other LYS's, I'm not the first person to feel this way about this business. read more
