I was recently asked by a friend of mine to help analyze a quote provided by E-Reilly Consulting…read morefor a very basic website with standard eCommerce features that one might find from a starter trial of Wix, Wordpress, Squarespace, etc. I participated in a conference call with Lindsey and Michael Reilly and I asked them (as I would any vendor) to explain how they arrived at their cost estimate. Immediately Michael went on the defensive and refused to explain anything about their approach to cost estimation, the actual tasks that would be performed or why they made the comment in previous meetings that "the eCommerce features were extremely complex". Keep in mind that this business would have exactly 11 products with zero variants and the request was extremely simple. The client wanted the ability to display the 11 products, click on them to view some detail images, add to a shopping cart and then checkout. This type of precanned functionality has been widely available for over 10 years from a wide variety of starter templates. As the conversation unfolded he became extremely hostile and his behavior was extremely abusive and offensive. In my 17 years of consulting I have NEVER been spoken to like that. It was the most aggressive, unprofessional behavior that I have ever witnessed (keep in mind I work for companies with annual revenues in excess of $10B and I"m used to working with a lot of Type A personalities). Unfortunately, over the course of my professional career I have on occasion run into companies who seek to take advantage of the lay person who does not understand technology and are willing to charge exorbitant fees for services that do not require much effort on the part of the company. That said, I understand that technical design and development experience varies widely among firms and it would be a poor assumption on my part to assume a high level of experience across all web/design/seo services companies. This is why I agreed to join the call so I could help determine if the extremely high dollar amount on the quote was due to a lack of experience on the part of the E-Reilly team, or perhaps a misunderstanding of the actual requirements, or was merely a conscious decision to pull one over on people who do not have the technical acumen to protect themselves. I cannot speak to motivation or to what actually did cause E-Reilly to provide such a bloated cost estimate but it certainly could have been debated in a professional manner without the hostility that was directed towards PAYING clients. Yes, the company had already been paid for a first phase of work by this company. Eventually I had no choice but to inform E-reilly that they really need to rethink what true customer service means and how people should treat fellow human beings before hanging up the phone (apologies for that but I do not deserve to be yelled at for providing basic advice to technology newbies who were being taken advantage of. FYI: Just in case you may be wondering if I do actually have the requisite technical experience to properly assess the quote delivered by E-reilly, consider that i am a former Accenture technology consultant with extensive eCommerce, web design and development experience. I have been hired on 3 separate occasions by Microsoft as a subject matter expert tasked with delivery of web based projects with a heavy eCommerce component. I have done so for over 17 years. This was in my opinion a very simple website that required zero code and ONLY configuration using point and click tools available in all widely known web platforms.
