I have always known about gelateria, but this is my first time visiting a cremeria. I guess the emphasis on "cream" is spot on. There's gelateria and then this cremeria, with the creamiest, smoothest gelato I've ever tasted. The rest aren't even close. It truly is in a different category. We didn't expect the line to be so long, several dozens deep out of the door. Especially insane as you consider it's not right smack on a touristy street, and there's very little signage around the shop. This is a gem but definitely not hidden. As we lined up we were really worried we'd miss our train back to Florence, but thankfully the line moved fast enough. As some articles mentioned, a sign of good gelato in Italy is that the ice cream is hidden inside stainless steel containers. Basically the higher the moulds of ice cream, the less good it is. On that count, this place certainly passes. There's a menu board with lots of flavor. No English translation so we took a picture and used our time in line to figure things out with google translate. This might be my favorite gelato place I tried in Bologna and I tried quite a few. This was a bit more hidden away from the main squares, but still not a far walk and is just across the street from the Galleria Cavour. I liked it so much that I actually went twice during my two-day trip just to try more flavors. The place gets quite busy, but service is very quick as they're able to get people served quickly. There's even a nice park across the street for people to enjoy their gelato. I ended up getting the Cavour (ricotta cheese, Amalfi lemons and shortcrust pastry) and the 50 Special (coffee mascarpone with terina pie) during my first visit and the watermelon and Tortino brenso (chocolate cake ice cream) on the second visit. Their specialty flavors are definitely the way to go, the combinations just work really well together. The tortino brenso was the biggest surprise for me as I was expecting it to be sweet, but it was actually a very dark chocolate (which I love!) and it might be my new go-to flavor. I consumed a lot of gelato for research purposes while in Bologna (thank me later), and I do think Cremeria Cavour was my favourite, with OGGI coming in a very close second. My favourite flavour was La Dotta... Creamy and Mascarpone-like with melted Nutella inside the cone! They also do a terrific pistachio and nocciola... And their "Cavour" flavour... Lemon and ricotta! Bellissimo! Heaven in your mouth. Also of note is that the gelateria is right in Piazza Cavour, one of the few green spaces in Bologna. After getting gelato 11 times during our trip to Italy, for me and my gf to go back to only this place out of all the gelato places we went to meant it really struck a chord with us. Cremeria Funivia is located close to Bologna's historic city center, the Piazza Maggiore, and is somewhat appropriately placed in a corner of the area near high end stores. It is worth noting while this place has a high end feel, you are definitely not breaking the bank by visiting. It is also worth noting that "real" gelato isn't piled on high for your instagramming pleasure but stored in controlled temperatures in metal cans where the only way you can get a look at a flavor is to ask for a sample. "Real" gelato also isn't too brightly colored - the color should be more natural looking. Regarding the flavors, I was a big fan of the caffe (coffee) and pistacchio but not so big on the white rice pudding that was known to be a local favorite...I think when it comes to gelato, I just personally like the texture smooth, which Cermeria Funivia really excels with the aforementioned flavors we tried. And that leads up to the fruit flavors we tried which I was definitely a much bigger fan of - the arancia (orange) and strawberry flavors were out of this world...or I would say very much of this world because they were the most natural tasting fruit flavors I've ever had for gelato. Cremeria Funivia walks that difficult thin line of making sure their flavors are just sweet enough without being too sweet, rich enough without being too rich, and smooth enough without being too light and for that they definitely serve up the BEST gelato I've ever had and by their existence, honors Bologna's reputation as Italy's food capital. Although this store is spacious, there really aren't enough high tables inside to help you linger...but you're in Bologna so you really should have your gelato outside while admiring the 13th century architecture and monuments nearby! This is ridiculous, how can gelato be this good? I read about this place and realized that there's actually 2 locations, one to the north and one downtown. The one downtown is conveniently next to a park and is perfect for sitting afterwards to indulge. At first it took me a while to order. Not only were there a lot of flavours, but they're all in Italian... Ask for the English menu, they felt bad for me and gave me one. They serve gelato in cups and cones. a nice note is that they fill even the smallest baby cup twice of how tall it is and they let you pick up to 2 flavours with it. I ordered the pistachio gelato and the peach gelato. I swear, they put real ingredients in the gelato. The peach gelato was AMAZING and had chunks of peach littered throughout it. It was the perfect tartness and sweet as well. Definitely recommended. The pistachio was recommended from other reviews so I got it too. It was crazy as well. Super fragrant and delightful flavour. You could also taste ground pistachios in it. The place they make and serve the gelato in can best be described as a food lab. The gelato comes out of refrigerated silos and there are stainless steel vats churning more out all day long. If you have 1 place to go to bologna, come here. Or their other location. We got the grande (€3.50 sugar cone/3 flavors) with Alice, Pistacchio and Tortino Funivia. This was, by far, the most expensive gelato we got during our stay (avg €1.50-2.50).
