After visiting the basalmic vinegar museum and tour, then finding out we could order Gelato with basalmic drizzled on top here at Bloom, of course I had to try this before leaving the city. What sounded interesting at best, but I wasn't sure if I would actually like it, I still committed to ordering this unique combo. Verdict???? Fantastic!!!! Milk Cream or Vanilla are the only options for this order and the lovely lady assisting us suggested Milk Cream as it allowed the flavor to pop with the basalmic. It didn't disappoint one bit. Also, it's 1 small scoop. Just enough to be satisfying. So glad I got what I came for even though after trying some samples, I could have easily been happy with several other flavors. My first gelato I had in Italy was at Bloom Gelato and as such it almost ruined any other gelato for me. This is award winning gelato, one of the best gelato shops in all of Italy. I'm so glad I researched gelato and food in Italy otherwise I probably would have not come across this shop. For some reason there aren't many gelato shops in Venice, in fact I don't recall even seeing one, but a lot of places are closed in January since it's the off season. But after Bloom, I tried to have gelato at least once a day while I was in Italy. Since I wanted to try so many different gelato shops while in Italy I wanted to keep it simple so I could make true comparisons. I'm a chocolate lover so that would be my base and pair it with another flavor, most likely a vanilla of some sort or a fruit that would pair well with the chocolate. I ended up coming to Bloom 4 times during my 2 trips to Modena. My first cup was cioccolato & crema, a basic chocolate & vanilla, but it was anything but basic. The crema was so good I couldn't believe it. And the chocolate was awesome, especially for being just chocolate and not dark chocolate or any other fancy chocolate. My mind was blown. I mean it was sooo creamy and flavorful. The next time I had cioccolato & stracciatella (chocolate chip), next trip was cioccolato & fior di latte. By then I had discovered cioccolata calda, kinda like hot chocolate but sooo much better. Bloom had cioccolata calda and I tried it and although it was good, it wasn't the best I had while in Italy. They had fior di bufala (buffalo milk) just once but that was the day I got the cioccolata calda. My final cup at Bloom was cioccolato & fior di asina (donkey milk) which I think is better than just vanilla, but not as good as the crema. Gelateria Bloom offers both gelato and granita for sale. You can tell they make a good product by their smell, feel, and especially taste! You don't find much gelato in Modena so I'm glad this place exists. Gelato aside, the granita was especially fun! Off beat flavors like passion fruit really show their creativity. Staff does speak English and an English paper menu was available at the counter. Prices are about as much as you'll find in any other gelateria. I'd happily return any time. read more

I was wandering around Modena looking for gelato when I stumbled upon Bloom Gelato. I walked in and asked to try a few flavors before I ended up choosing Ricordo Catalano. Based off my Google Translate skills, that means Catalan souvenir or souvenir of/from Catalan. It was vanilla flavored milk flower and Goa cinnamon, enriched with orange jam. It tasted amazing and I left satisfied. The next day, I just had to have gelato again and didn't bother looking for a different gelateria, I just knew I wanted to go back to Bloom Gelato. I tried a few more flavors before choose Pistacchio Tostato or roasted pistachio. I just knew I had to have pistachio gelato while in Italy. They used Sicilian pistachios and it had a nice green/brown color to it, which is a sign of fresh pistachio, and showed in the taste. If you see bright green pistachio gelato, similar to BR31 pistachio ice cream, RUN! Apparently, Bloom Gelato has been in Gambero Rosso Guida Gelaterie d'Italia for two years in a row at the time of my visit (now three, 2017-2019). What did that mean to me at the time? Nothing. I had no clue what that meant. Now that I know and you are probably wondering, think of it as the Michelin Guide for gelaterias in Italy. Having been in Italy for a few days now, mostly Milan, and eating gelato pretty much everyday, my wife and I whole-heartedly agreed that we had never had any bad gelato here in Italy. Previous to Italy, we were in France, and the gelato was hit or miss. But here in Italy, all gelato we had was quite good. And then we stumbled upon Gelateria Bloom. The gelato here is the difference between good and great. No, wait. It's not just great, it's magnificent. It's wonderful. It's a true delight to your taste buds. The owner, Gian-Luca -- I hope I spelled that correctly -- was so friendly and so generous in sharing his knowledge and his passion for top notch gelato. As he so modestly put it, he is just the catalyst that brings all of his fine quality ingredients together. The magic happens behind the scenes in whom he purchases his ingredients from. He gets nothing but the best quality stuff from local farms and dairies around the area. To put it in perspective, his "fior di latte" flavour of gelato which typically just has a mild milk flavour at most gelato shops, was anything but mild. The gelato was oozing with flavour. This is because he uses milk from a breed of cow that is rarely used anymore for their milk. These cows are difficult to breed and don't produce a lot of milk, so not many dairies breed them anymore. But the milk they produce is delicious, and therefore, so is the gelato that it's used in! All of the gelato here is natural, has no preservatives, and so evidently gets a lot of care and attention put into making it. The result is a flavour and texture that is so pure and creates sheer bliss in your mouth. We ended up getting the ciliegia flavour, a type of cherry, and the fior di latte. And even though we had actually just eaten gelato from another place about five minutes before accidentally discovering Bloom, we enjoyed Bloom's gelato so much more. A tip for customers/visitors: if it is not too busy, ask Gian-Luca some questions about his work. His passion for gelato is contagious. Thank you Gian-Luca for doing what you do. Amazing gelato! It was very late when I arrived and I think they might have just been closing as I walked up. The gentleman there was kind enough to invite me in and still serve me. His English was perfect although he was gracious and patient enough to tolerate my attempt to speak Italian. I asked for a recommendation with no boundaries and his choices were perfect: pistacchio first followed with a "cherry" and sage. He didn't quite have a proper English translation for the fruit mix, but it was delightful. It's taken me three trips to Modena before I found time to visit this gelateria, but the wait was worth it.
