I was craving pupusas and ordered cheese with loroco ones to go. The place is small. As you enter, they have several aguas frescas inside a cooler. The tables are really close to each other. I ordered a fruit salad drink to have there while waiting for the pupusas. This isn't your typical "fresco de ensalada de frutas." It's pinkish. I don't know what they're using as the base for the drink. The place was playing Christian music. The entrance door has a star. I didn't find the wait staff friendly. While it says bakery, there were no pastries visible. The pupusas are not the best I've tried in Houston. They're too doughy. I doubt I'll be back. read more

This place is honestly one of the best Salvadoran food places I've had in years, when you walked in the server was very welcoming and told me to sit anywhere I liked. They have a cooler with drinks and aguas frescas, and a place with tons of bread for sale. The server was so nice throughout the whole thing, even tho she was the only one on the floor for the night she still was very attentive and nice. It is a small place with tables very close together, but still a great place. Will definitely return! read more

My car repair took longer than usual, so I headed here, as a friend recommended it. Having taught school in Central America, I came to love pupusas,but want the real thing,and that's what you'll get at Cristo Rey! Very nice staff, clean and simple restaurant. I had a bean and cheese pupusa, and platanos fritos, with crema. It takes a few minutes to get your food, because they are making it to order; served hot and fresh, with some delicious beans, too. The portions are generous, and good prices. This is simple, delicious food, and a great place to get to know the food from Salvador. Looking forward to my next visit! read more

Not disappointed one bit. Everything was very fresh and perfectly cooked. We ordered the chicken & cheese, bean & cheese and the squash pupusas. Squash was my favorite, chicken was my husbands and bean was my daughters. The salsa wasn't spicy and had a great flavor! We will drive back to the area just for these! read more

Just had dinner here because the other place down the street closes on Mondays. So glad it was because they're pupusas are 10x better. They're not greasy at all and full of filling. Don't know if that is the way they're supposed to be made, but with this summer heat the last thing I want to eat is a super greasy thick corn tortilla. They're aguas are great, probably the best maracuya water I've had in town, the jamaica water was super fresh and not to sweet. Best part is they fill it to the top and don't add too much ice. Three of us dined and we kept the bill under 25 dollars. Great value because you'll leave with a full stomach. I hadn't had pupusas in a while so I started searching for them close to my hood. Dinora's had been recommended by friends but it was closed. Genesis Pupusas looked good on paper, but it was also closed on Sundays. Cristo Rey was open. A secular guy like me would normally stay away from a place thus named, but the stomach cares not about such things. The place is a classic hole-in-the-wall. But the food was surprisingly good. The pupusas were soft and tasty; not at all greasy as they often are. The melted cheese and ground chicharron oozed out of them. Not all masa as they might be at a stingy place. The pastelitos were perfectly cooked; the cassava shell crispy and dry. The atole de elote was served in a morro (gourd) bowl just as it is in the markets in Central America. Me and my family LOVE to visit this restaurant! Their pupusas and curtido are the best. Their tomato sauce is delicious and not spicy, is very convenient because my son is only 2 and doesn't eat spicy food and we're all able to enjoy our meal. The food was DISGUSTING! If you want good salvadorian food DO NOT!! DO NOT come here. The pupusas are nasty and the sandwiches de pollo are horrible they just put mustard and thats all. The aguas taste more like water. Tamales taste nasty and old. I wish I could get my money back all the food went to wasted! If you want good food don't come here!!!! read more

We were going to try Pam's cajun place while in this part of town but it was closed so we got on yelp to find something else good. Thought we would give this place a try as we like Salvadorian/Central American food too. Glad we did, this place was great and it was cheap af to boot. Had bean and cheese papusa, a bean tamale, chicken tamale, empandada, side of beans and rice, and plaintain empanadas for dessert. This all cost something like $12. A side of refried beans is .60! And they were GOOOOOOD beans. We are like refried bean experts, trust us, these are great. It took each dish a little bit to come out so you know they were whipping this stuff up fresh. It doesn't look like much but everything served was just fresh, hot, savory, and delicious. Salsas were good also. We had never had a dessert like the plaintain empanadas which also have a sort of milk custard inside with the plaintains. Unique texture and flavor. We agreed it would be even better with ice cream or whip cream or such but hey you can't have everything. Will def come back to try more options. I think a solid meal would just be to get beans, rice, and some tortillas and go to town on them. Also, maybe sneak in some whipped cream for those dessert empanadas. read more
