The upper entrance is between two houses on Inglewood Street. Seattle is full of passageways like this, more character-ful with beautiful vegetation and not cordoned off by chain link fencing, but few elicit actual Yelp-reviewed status. In green Seattle a stairpath between streets on different sections of a hill can be enchanting, but here it is ...not. There is a Mar Vista Recreation Center not too far from this spot, it's got ball fields. Since we are largely in the flat lands, this stair case provides a little special workout. The view of the valley is interesting from here. It's a staircase with room for two people one going up and one going down. It is enclosed in fencing. Hard to find any more words for these concrete stairs.

The graceful vintage homes on large lots along Adelaide overlook ocean and canyon. At 4th & Adelaide are the famed Santa Monica Stairs (http://www.yelp.com/biz/PGHG7VCDrklvdA-QHUTHmw and http://www.yelp.com/biz/27Xe5HcTCI59CBnFHsD7WQ), that go all the way down to the bottom of the canyon, to Entrada Dr.. A second set of stairs is just up the street. The stairs attract a constant crowd of fitness enthusiasts & trainers, and their stream of cars. For that reason, I might pass on actually living on Adelaide if given the opportunity because privacy would be compromised. But I'll continue to enjoy a stroll now and then in this little piece of paradise.

During those months, many triathletes and open water swimmers make this their weekly ritual. At times hundreds of people show up to swim! Whenever I go to this event, it just makes my day and I almost feel like being on a beach holiday. The meeting location is at the lifeguard tower 26, very close to Barnard Way and Ocean Park Blvd. Parking is available on street and also in lot (payment required). It's also very close to some outdoor showers and bathrooms so you can rinse down and change before going home (or work!). One key thing is that no lifeguard is on duty at the time so you should be a proficient swimmer before considering going into the water. Wetsuits are not required, but highly recommended.

The class size is very small so you get a lot of individual attention. Justino is very patient. He explains everything step by step, and will ease you to the next step when you're ready. Both instructors are very encouraging and so are the other students. I had tried learning once in my own and after this class I was able to bike straight and was learning my turns. Definitely recommend this class, it's cheaper than all other classes, conveniently located by the Santa Monica bike path, easy parking lot, and fun! Street parking options are…read moreeither metered or free, though after 6pm on Saturday the metered option becomes free, and the free options become exclusively designated for those with permits. I circled around a bit through a few blocks before chancing on a spot. Walking towards the park, I overheard a few regulars of the park complaining about the commotion. What can you do? There was a smell towards the 7th and California corner, though the majority of the park was cleansed by the gentle ocean breeze, and the restrooms seemed fairly clean. Lots of folks came by for the mahjong event, and it turned out to be a fun little get-together. Beginners and seasoned pros alike shared a table, and even young kids were able to pick up on the gameplay. Haha I was mistaken for a teaching assistant more than once. Playing big mahjong with the cardboard boxed tiles was a unique shared experience, and we did end up winning a round!

What…read morestarted as a small group of friends riding bikes through the city after dark has grown into a phenomenon of more than 1400 people reclaiming the roads of Los Angeles in the name of bicycle culture, and has inspired similar rides both within Los Angeles and in several other cities. The ride is similar to the Critical Mass in that they both are about promoting bicycles. But whereas Critical Mass is much more political and confrontational with the motoring world (occurring during rush hour), Midnight Ridazz begins around 10pm after the roads have cleared and is more about having fun rather than having an agenda, thus attracting riders of all experience levels and backgrounds. As a result, I would argue that it is largely responsible for the sort of bicycle renaissance happening in this car-centric city. Midnight Ridazz rides used to regularly congregate at the Pioneer Chicken parking lot, but now the meet-up point changes every month. Check the website the week of the ride to get the details. The routes are usually around 15 miles long and go at a very easy pace so everyone can keep up. The saying is "No rider left behind" so even if you get a flat tire or something else should go wrong, there'll be people there to back you up. Bring a bike, a flask, and a serious appetite for a good time and remember: when they say, "Midnight Ridazz!" you say, "RIDE ON!"
