The ultimate party on wheels! Midnight Ridazz happens the second Friday night of every month. What started as a small group of friends riding bikes through the city after dark has grown into a phenomenon of more than 1400 people reclaiming the roads of Los Angeles in the name of bicycle culture, and has inspired similar rides both within Los Angeles and in several other cities. The ride is similar to the Critical Mass in that they both are about promoting bicycles. But whereas Critical Mass is much more political and confrontational with the motoring world (occurring during rush hour), Midnight Ridazz begins around 10pm after the roads have cleared and is more about having fun rather than having an agenda, thus attracting riders of all experience levels and backgrounds. As a result, I would argue that it is largely responsible for the sort of bicycle renaissance happening in this car-centric city. Midnight Ridazz rides used to regularly congregate at the Pioneer Chicken parking lot, but now the meet-up point changes every month. Check the website the week of the ride to get the details. Ok, so for the past year and a half or so ive been riding my Roadie all by myself. Yah, pretty lame huh? i would cruise from my place in west LA to the beach, up and down the bike path for a 20 mi loop seeking some low impact cardiovascular exercise. Eventually, the product of having to cycle alone began its downward spiral of loneliness. no one to cheer you on, no one to look forward to seeing, and no one to compete with. AH, those were the days before i found out about MidnightRidazz! My first outing with them was on a Taco Tuesday ride. As luck would have it, there meet up spot was less than a mile from where i stayed and over 70 people showed up! Almost everyone was freindly and very approachable. After about 5 minutes of hand shaking (L A style of course) and being greeted by everyone, i lost track of almost everyone's name. i guess that would be considered a good thing right? with that said, we took off as a group through the streets of culver city to the beach and boyond. i found myself lost amongst great people. responsible, respectful, yet still able to have a great time trying their best to follow the 'rider code'. i found perfect harmony as i rode alongside with fixies, singles, and cruisers. MidnightRidazz has rides for everyday of the week all over L A. so no matter where u live, you have a group to ride with. All rides are posted on the ride calander on midnightridazz.com. Check them out! i now ride with midnightridazz at least a few times a week and i have begun my own century ride twice a month. i just finished a ride from santa monica to san diego and next week i will be venturing from L A to Santabarbara.i can honestly say i am in the best shape of my life-heart rate is at 40 bpm, bp is 100/60, total cholesterol is under 130, and i can see my six pack again. i just want to thank midnightridazz for being my positive vice- =) i hope to see more and more people join as this group/culture grows! Okay, so I rode again last night for the "Super-Fun DTLA Ride," this time with a couple friends. I'd say the whole group was about 80-100 heads deep. AND I actually partook (is that a word?) in some libations, which, I admit, made the experience that much more enjoyable. So anyways... I guess i really love these things because when it comes down to it, I'm riding with a big group of folks at night through the city, which is just absolute bliss for me. No, it's not the most perfect experience--there's lots of cussing and just straight-up obnoxious riders; there are turns and destinations that leave you extremely far from where you started; and sometimes, there may be a crash or a stolen bicycle thrown into the mix. I think if you come with these amazing expectations about how the other riders are going to be, then you may be disappointed (although there are definitely a couple handfuls of folks that I've met that are mad cool). Then at the same time, if you stricly go for the 'ride,' you may be missing out too. Here would be my tips for doing a Midnight Ridazz ride and getting the best experience out of it: - Bring a couple friends. It's kinda like going to a nightclub. Most of us wouldn't roll alone. And if you're shy like me, at least you won't be looking all awkward when they take those long-ass breaks. - Be safe and prepared. Bring all the stuff you feel you need to be safe: helmets, front and back lights, tools, patch kits, mini-pumps, etc. Stay out of the left lane. Watch for potholes or oncoming cars. Ride straight and predictably. Don't cut people off. - Be respectful. Don't litter. Thank drivers who let you pass. Make way for drivers to get in and out of the parking lots when the group is taking a break. Share snacks and drinks. Ignore dumbasses who are annoying just for the sake of being annoying. - Make NOISE! This is not only fun, but safe! Kind of like a collective siren. - Peep the lingo. I'm still learning this, but you may hear stuff like, "car in the back!" or "slowing down!" which is actually a way for everyone to be a little accountable to each other. When you feel comfortable enough, chime along! It helps everyone. - "Try it on." Sometimes these rides have crazy themes and activities, like a certain costume that people have to wear or a game of hide-and-go-seek at the park. If you're feeling it, give it a try! - Make sure you're doing the right ride! Check the website and make sure you're going to the one with a pace and route that you are cool with. The fast rides don't mess around. - LOCK your BIKE! Somebody got their bike stolen last night. In such a big group, sometimes it's easy to just stroll away with someone's horse. - Drink responsibly. Like I said, having a couple of beers helped loosen me up a little. BUT, know when to say when! Piss off all the drivers by making them wait for 20 minutes while we all roll past hootin and whoot-whootin. Give a homeless dude a Rogue Dead Guy Ale from the back pack. End up at Mariachi Square in Boyle Heights. Dance Ranchera with da Ridazzz for 45 minutes. Eat free pizza from some dude. Find your friends. Go home and tell everyone you know about it the next day. I hope none of my bicycling friends see this and hate me for it but I need to break it down. Bicycles are wonderful. I love to ride them, with my friends, alone, in medium sized crowds...but with a thousand people? That's a no. More than once when veteran Ridazz were "blocking" traffic, and the drivers of vehicles were cussing, revving their engines--about to run us over-- I felt..hmm..unsafe. I think I would be pissed too. At that point I would not give a damn about some costumed freaks on bicycles. So what began as a few people from the Bicicocina scheduling rides and not giving details until the day of, handing out fliers, being truly guerrilla about it... has turned in to something staggeringly larger. I think in some ways, that's great for folks who haven't ridden a bike in ten years and need to see how many Angeleans really ride. These people need Ridazz. ( I also agree with the girl who commented on the hardcore underground misspelling of Riders just because that's funny to comment on.) No one who organizes this event is ever going to handle it the "right" law-abiding, permit ordering, traffic flowing way no matter how many thousands of people are involved. The last ride I went on was seriously enormous, slow and not even fun. Thanks anyway but I'm gonna organize my own rides and forget about this one. read more

I was there for the Big Summer 1000 ridazz event and a few LA Critical Masses. It's a party on bikes. Bring yourself, friends, an open mind, and have fun. The rides are pretty easy, except part of the North Hollywood ride is uphill and a bunch of people end up walking their bikes. But the entire group waits for you at a liquor mart on top of the hill. Oh, and when the cops and helicopters show up, it's cool. just don't cause trouble, and they'll handle the traffic. read more

Seriously, Midnight Ridazz changed my life. I attend rides sporadically but since my first one, I've become a more avid bike rider and I've become healthier. I help organize my own rides with my friends on the weekends. The experience is like a mixture of every subculture I have ever been involved with. Like all subcultures, there is music and various contraband being enjoyed. The taking over the streets aspect feels punk rock. The exhilaration felt at the end of a ride reminds me of the best raves I have ever attended. I like the fact that there is diversity. There are people of all races, scenes, backgrounds, ages that come out to this. There all kinds of crazy bikes: mountain, street, fixies, cruisers, tall bikes, tandems, rickshaws etc. I like the fact that they the motto is, "no rider left behind". On my first rides, I was often in the very back but now I hold my own in the middle. I've rarely been stranded and when I have been, it wasn't long before a rider was helping me with a flat and getting me to catch up. The only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is that I am beginning to see the decline of this wonderful scene in the forefront. As soon as people within a subculture taunt one of their own, make their own factions within, or claim certain elitism, the wonderfulness of a scene starts to go downhill. This is why I attend only once in a while. My friends that attend every week have started to become burnt out by the bullshit. For me, the whole thing is still new. It really could change your life. Midnight Ridazz is highly recommended, regardless of how much you think you hate cyclists or bikes or having fun. Regardless of your personality, you will always find something fun about each ride. Check out the ride calendar, there are slow social rides, urban exploration rides, fast-paced rides, party rides, and everything else in between. I honestly think that all those super-elite serious triathletes and roadies that rarely smile could really enjoy these night rides. So let's see, what else do you get to rate here on yelp? I did the Lebowski ride last summer and I had the BEST TIME!!! I resurrected my bike after at least 3 years of not using it, got the lights, a helmet...the only thing I did wrong was that my pant cuffs were flapping in the wind. I saw the pros with their airtight pants or they had them folded up or they wore shorts. Lesson learned. It was great, there was this big dude that hauled speakers and played the soundtrack to the movie, people were dressed up like the characters. It started at midnight which was great - less traffic and starting and midnight just makes it all that much cooler. There were a few riders who really helped out the rest of us and kind of shepherded us through major streets and the red lights when the group couldn't make it all through in one green. Those people were rad to have there. Especially this one dude my friend and I called "The Ninja". He was Asian, wore all black, was riding a fixie (I think) and zipped through and around everyone, and I dont think I ever saw him speak to to a single soul. He always guided us through the lights. He was a helpful ninja. The vibe was fine and all the cars we came across honked in support and waved - it felt like our own little parade. Fortunately no one in this crowd seemed to have any aggressive feelings towards autos. Hearing that people are getting psycho on cars is really disappointing. I'm all for Bike riding. I've always enjoyed it since I was a kid. Unfortunately, I don't think this is the kind of club for me. At one time I considered joining one of their rides after seeing them going through downtown one night. Then a friend of mine had a very uncool experience with these people. He and his wife were attacked in their car by the Ridazz one night. He told me that they were taking up both sides of the road and they were beeping their horn to try and get through them. He said a small group of them swarmed around their car and began kicking and smacking the side of their car. I couldn't believe it until I saw the dents and hand prints on his wifes car. I'm guessing all the beer they say they like to chug along with a "group think" kind of deal was what played a part in the ordeal. I can't say they're all bad. I think most of them just want to have a good time. However, there is an element of true "A-Holes" among them that is unfortunate for them. I just ride my cruiser on Venice beach up and down to Santa Monica. I don't recommend getting loaded while your riding a bike either. You can get popped for a DUI just as easily that way or just plain old crash and burn which always sucks. I'm sure there are a lot of cool clubs to join. I just don't think this one is your best bet. read more

west LA alphabet soup ride. 700-800 riders la brea park to santa monica pier to marina del rey and back crazy fuckin shit from 10pm to 4am biggest mobile party ive ever seen excessively friendly people, worked well as a communicative team. riders would hold traffic ourselves to keep the ride going. PA powered Ipod to keep a groove going at a few points in the crowd, not just one person. dancing costumes hahahaha, holy shit. there were a few people who were ticketed by the police. i suppose that's what we got for stopping. definitely one of the funnest times ive ever had. read more

My first 5. It's well deserved. For being such a car city, LA has resparked my interest in biking. Midnight Ridazz is flat out insane. From biking late in the evening to early in the morning, it's a transformation...like a Night on Bald Mountain. During the rides, the group owns the road.Cars will respect you, except for that occasional crazy one. Having the chance going through LAX arrivals and exiting on Sepulveda on bike was balls. People are friendly here. It takes getting used to all the names that fly! Now that I think of it...Boston probably did this too. I'm sure it's way better here. There's nothing like going through a huge city like LA when it sleeps. When going home at the end of a ride, it's a great time to think and be alone. Riding in the middle of a street like Washington Blvd in Venice/Culver City @ 4am is ___________ (you fill in the blank and see if it compares to mine). Getting to beach is like riding to the end of the world. it's pitch black with the lights of the city behind you. Contemplating where the world steps into the dark is always an uncertainty that produces unique speculations. Go to bridge between Marina Del Rey and Playa Del Rey for this kind of experience. People do get rowdy for good intentions. But sometimes good intentions go too far. Keep in mind that riding your bike in the streets of LA is a privilege. I took part in their "Ride Without a Name" ride last night and I enjoyed it. I've read some of the reviews and though the numbers seem to have decreased there are some young folk that might be weaving in and out of the pack a bit too fast. The route seems well planned out. The leader gives everyone one a route guide and the pack never got broken up. We did run a lot of red lights. I mean a lot. However, the drivers around us and even the residents all seemed to enjoy watching all the bikers ride through. They cheered us on, honked their horn (and not to tell us to get out of the way), and took pictures. We did bump in to a couple of cop cars along the way and they, very politely, reminded us to stay in one lane. There were some spills and some flats so be careful and come prepared. I would definitely ride again with the group. Just don't let the pot smoking, Miller lite drinking, "I'm not a hipster"-hipster, get in the way of a good ride. Unless of course they're ride right in front of you and you have to paint some skid marks on their back. read more
