I've attended many Black churches in my life, so I'm very familiar with call-and-response, 30…read moreminutes of praise and worship, and energetic congregations. What's happening at this church - especially during the 11:30AM and 1:15PM services - is not that. It has crossed into full sensationalism and performance. The volume is extreme, the sermons are dramatized for reaction, and the environment lacks the reverence anyone would expect in a house of worship. I've seen people twerking in the hallways. I've seen women walk directly up to the pulpit in the middle of the pastor's sermon to shout at him and point while he's speaking. The atmosphere feels more like a comedy club than a church, and it's clear they're prioritizing being "modern" over being spiritually grounded. If you want to actually learn and experience respectful worship, stick to the 8:00 AM or 9:45 AM services. Those earlier services are much calmer, with sermons focused on the Word - not on the reactions of the crowd. The later services are dominated by attention-seeking behavior, unnecessary screaming, and constant distractions that take away from the biblical message, including dramatized retellings of scripture. For example, during the sermon about the woman caught in adultery, the pastor added details that don't appear in the text - talking about who she slept with and presenting the story like a modern-day reality show. The crowd reacted as though they were watching an episode, screaming and laughing as if the pulpit were a stage. If you're looking for reverence, biblical teaching, and an environment that respects the sanctuary, the later services are not the place. Hope they address: * the loss of reverence * the distraction from actual biblical teaching * the ways certain service times encourage chaos * how the atmosphere is becoming indistinguishable from a club

To sum it up: amazing worship, amazing messages, amazing pastor, friendly people, amazing youth programs, awesome women's Bible study, a large variety of Sunday school classes...I can't say enough good things about this church. I am so blessed to have found it! I could go on and on for pages about how fantastic this church is and how passionate and genuine the staff has been. This was the children's mass, so the choir was complied with kids of all ages. They included, the organ, piano, flute and a few string instruments. I attended this church from about 6 years old until high school. On an average week, I would spend…read moreat least 10 to 15 hours a week at this place, including multi-day revivals, Saturday prayer mornings, Wednesday nights, and of course, Sunday mornings, not to mention additional holiday events. My mom and I started attending this church and upon our first visit, we were approached and invited to lunch with an "elder", who began courting my mom and ended up marrying her, against my will. Suffice to say, this man was not a godly man, and the church treated our family like outcasts instead of helping me. I was made fun of by the youth group and called a loner, was ignored, isolated, and humiliated to sit on the front row of this church with my "family", yet we were cordially ignored and avoided, eventually being asked to leave the church. It always confused me, how people who sang about helping others, grace, helping the helpless, chose to turn their backs on me. When I finally had the strength to leave Irving in 2008, I called my so called pastor of this church to seek guidance, support and finally use my voice and share the truth, something that I had not been able to do since 6 years old. No matter how many times I called his office, how many messages I left, I was repeatedly told he was busy, or unavailable. I even reached out to his family, which was of no use. It broke my heart, that a place that boasted they were so full of God's spirit, could reject our family instead of intervening. An entire organization who Saw ME as an embarrassment instead of being an advocate for a defenseless little girl. I can never again take this church seriously as they have put their money where their mouth is and have shown me for over a decade, their true colors. My advice would be hard pass. Like most churches, they will have modern affects. Fresh coffee. Bright, shiny smiles. Even wonderful people who are being unknowingly exploited for free labor AKA serving, however the "warm fuzzy" feeling that coats you as you walk in isn't the holy spirit. It's a song and dance to get you to fund their illusion and kush lifestyle. So incredibly sad that the gaudy, prideful and arrogant people of this church never took the time to see I needed help, that my mom was too worn down and emotionally weak to take care of me and leave the "Elder". We were surrounded a sea of religious leaders who never intended to get their pretty shoes dirty. Thanks for everything, Calvary Church, what a gem!

The singing was soulful and we've had "He Has Done Marvelous Things" stuck in our heads since. It was the first time we had ever sung it and we had goosebumps! The only reason for the 3 stars, is that while partaking of communion, a cell phone was plugged into a charger and playing hip hop music. Two teens burst into the room loudly and exited slamming the door. Communion is supposed to be a sacred time, and it was clear the youth haven't been taught to be reverent and respectful while others are partaking. No apologies were made to us by the teens or others members there. This congregation has evening communion for those who didnt partake in the morning and has a kitchen with fellowship hall. If you're familiar with church of Christ, you'll appreciate the heads up.
